I knew about the a42 firmware (it is stated on the product page).

What was surprising was the OTA upgrade to Nougat.
Why is it surprising ? It has a42 firmware and that gets OTA updates.

When did you buy it because I don't see the price at 185€ today?

Can anyone confirm what the rooting procedure is for a p2c72 hardware phone that came supplied from GearBest with p2a42 firmware? Can I flash TWRP 3.1.1-1? Not sure what to do after that as most rooting guides say something like 'only for p2a42' or 'don't use on p2c72'. Thanks.

iff the phones firmware reads p2a42 it should rooted as per those instructions because i belive in essence they are the same phone with only minor radio variations.

You can safely follow the steps in the TWRP guide. Basically you now have to request bootloader unlock, wait 14 days, install TWRP, then install root by flashing the root zip through TWRP. Follow the steps in the TWRP guide for p2a42. You'll be fine.

Yup, exactly. However, it does depend on you using TWRP 3.1.1-0 and above (3.1.1-1 is fine too).

Thanks. I didn't notice that. I've changed it now from "p2c72" to "p2a42".

Yup, I flashed TWRP 3.1.1-1 and rooted as if it was a standard p2a42 and it worked fine. Thanks.

I've brought p2c72 from GearBest this week, which has already been pre-loaded with p2a42 - Great.

However, I'm a bit paranoid about trusting this kind of involvement in the supply chain. I've downloaded a few tools to try and confirm it's free of spyware, malware and adware but I'm still considering flashing it and starting from scratch myself.

Am I being silly? Would this even remove what I'm worried about? Is there anything else I can check to give me confidence? How will our gang get out of this one? Will you have to tune in next week to find out?

P.S.. Great forum/community. I'm not sure about my P2 but I'm certainly going to flash and update my HTC One.

i assume you order it from outside your country....well...if warranty is still valid and your able to ship your product in case something fault...THEN DONT ROOT AND DONT UNLOCK BOOTLOAD ...until your warranty goes
have kaspersky & Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on ur andriod .....keep them for a week running ...if you didnt got any alert ...then the Rom is fine..and dont worry

if your dont care about warranty . .and looking for secure ....then start rooting ur device and go for any other custom ROM here or official stock:cowboy:

Thanks. All the security app's haven't detected anything but I'm going to flash it anyway because I'm not too fussed about the warranty.

It's lucky you mentioned official stock because I hadn't really considered this option. I checked the Lenovo site and found a Open Source Code (for Android 7.0, Nougat) - Lenovo P2 (P2a42) download which I assume should work with the P2c72. Maybe I should be looking through this [GUIDE] Upgrade P2C72 (already with a42) to Nougat ver. S233 thread instead.

Changing P2c72 to P2a42

Hello guys, i am happy to add my own contribution to this thread on changing P2c72 to P2a42.
this is how am able to convert my P2c72 to P2a42 then to Stock Nougat without unlocking the bootloader.
Straight to the point...
I downloaded "p2a42_S048.zip" for fastboot flashing. Here: mediafire com/file/mm9b6hlwbaxpdnj/P2a42_S048_161111_ROW_fastboot_Lodd.7z
Also downloaded Lenovo Stock Nougat Rom. Changed it to "update.zip. Here: phonedl. ota.lenovomm. com/dls/v6/P2a42_S062_170117_ROW_TO_P2a42_S232_170320_ROW_WC00AFB1F4.zip
PROCESS......
I extract all files in the SW folder to ADB fastboot folder, put my phone in fastboot mode, connected it to PC, and i just clicked on the Flashball.BAT.
This flashed all the required files on the phone.
After the process is completed, i tried to turn on my phone but it bootloop, stuck on Lenovo logo bootscreen.
So what i then did is that i booted into Recovery mode, wiped everything under the format in recovery.
Wiped data, cashe, and others.
I now put the Nougat stock i downloaded into my external SD CARD, changed the name to "update.zip"
Then i installed it through update in phone recovery, after the installation complete by 100%, it tells me UPDATE FAILED, but on booting my phone, BAM! it works! Android Nougat is fully functioning.
Just like that.
I am posting this in order to help others.
My P2c72 now Runs Nougat 7.0 Stock without unlocking bootloader.
To unlock the bootloader doesnt request for any china phone number after this update, you can request for bootloader unlock normally now.
Am sure this will work for others too.

Hello I have a P2 p2c72 with rom p2a42 bought at gearbest.
I just want to root it to use titanium backup (root access), should I use twrp recovery or can I stay with the original recovery and flash magisk after unlock bootloader ?
I don't want custom rom.
Thank you.

You should use TWRP imo.

---------- Post added at 03:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:45 PM ----------

I have been using the p2c72 on custom ROMs provided here on XDA but sadly most of them don't function correctly for the device.

I get lots of bugs relating to lockscreen (enable pin and lockscreen causes black display until reboot), ambient display, fingerprint, camera (no video recording) small crashes and more. I was really hoping to get a usable 8 experience on this device but it looks like it's not possible.

I just received my 64G p2a42 from Gearbest. bootloader is lock. I can get OTA to update lastest version S251. somehow I'm using apps to see the partition, found that the data partition is ext4. I read all of post here said that it should be f2fs in original.
