Flash a full Firmware with SPFT (back to original / unbrick)

Flash a full Firmware with SPFT (back to original / unbrick)

Full Guide dedicated to S1 (S510)

Generic guide:

Drivers
  • Download MTK Drivers : MTK_SP_Drivers_v1.4.rar (last one unsigned) or MTK_Signed_Drivers.zip (older but signed for Windows 8)
  • Open your Windows device manager
  • Remove your battery from your device, or unplug it, or make sure your device is off if your battery is not accessible
  • Plug your device to your PC with USB cable (a good cable, on a direct back USB port, avoid front USB ports)
  • A "MTxx Preloader" device should appears for a few seconds, install drivers for it
  • Unplug, replug the USB cable, your device should be well regconized (a COM device in USB Ports & Com)

Flash the firmware
  • Download the Firmware archive and the SP Flash tool for your device from first Post
  • Unzip both SPFT and Firmware archives
  • Run Flash_Tool.exe has an administrator
  • Click on "Scatter Loading" and choose the scatter MTxxx_Android_scatter_emmc.txt file from the Firmware directory
  • You should have something like :
    SPFT v3 :
    SPFT-S510.png

    SPFT v5 :
    SPFT_Z200_full.png
  • /!\ It's recommended to uncheck the "PRELOADER" partition, you can try to make the process with this checked only if it failed before while unchecked.
Also, if "Download Only" is not enough, you can choose "Firmware Upgrade".
  • Click on "Download" : SPFT is now waiting for a device a COM port to Flash
  • Remove your battery from your device, or unplug it, or make sure your device if off
  • Plug your device to your PC with USB cable (a good cable, on a direct back USB port, avoid front USB ports)
  • The flashing process will start automatically : do not unplug your USB cable !
  • A red bar for COM loading, a purple bar for Preloader Flashing, a yellow bar for Firmware flashing
  • Wait for a Green Circle saying the flash process is finished
    SPFT v3 :

    81473409.png

  • Close SPFT, unplug USB Cable, put back your battery, charge your phone for 10min, try to boot it

And your device is back ;)

Flash CWM Recovery & Root your device

Flash CWM Recovery & Root your device

Scatters

Generic Guide
  • Make sure to have the MTK driver properly installed (look at POST #2)
  • Download the compatible SP Flash Tool for your device from POST #1
  • Download the compatible Custom Recovery for your device from POST #1
  • Download the SuperSU ZIP available at http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu and put this zip on your Internal Memory (or External SDCard)
  • Get the appropriate Scatter for your device (also available in the Firmware directory)
  • Run Flash_Tool.exe has an administrator
  • Click on "Scatter Loading" and choose the scatter MTxxx_Android_scatter_emmc.txt file
  • Unckeck all the partition except the recovery one in order to flash only the recovery
  • Click on the recovery path, and choose the CWM Recovery file to flash
  • You should have something like :
    SPFT v3 :
    SPF.png

    SPFT v5 :
    SPFT_Z200.png

  • Unplug the USB cable, close SPFT, but don't power on your device
  • Boot your device directly into Recovery with the key combination (it's Vol- + Power on many MTK devices, but could be different depending the device)

    Recovery key combination for Jade (S55), Jade S (S56), Jade Z (S57) :
    1. When the device is totally off, press Volume-UP button and HOLD it
    2. Press Power button (keep holding Volume-UP), and HOLD both of Power & Volume-UP
    3. When the device vibrates for the first time, release Power, but keep holding Volume-UP
    4. As soon as it vibrates a second time, move from Volume-UP button (release it) to Volume-DOWN button (hold it)
    5. It vibrates again, you can release all buttons and recovery is loaded
    Video made by @nikagl : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfUBu6sVCxw
  • You can now Flash SuperSU zip in order to gain Root ;)
  • Reboot your device :
    - You should answer Yes when asking "Disable Flash Recovery"
    - You should answer No when asking to "Push root with /system/xbin/su"
This happens because CWM don't regconize very well the su binary installed by SuperSU (it's looking for the superuser one)
  • Enjoy Root & CWM ! :victory:

NB : If you power on your device after the CWM flash, there is many chance that the system will erase the recovery by the stock one.
In this case, CWM is lost, and you should make the Guide again and make sure to Reboot into CWM right after the flashing process.

Very useful post!

I've been waiting for rooting my E700 for a while. One thing I'm not sure is that if this method only works with an older firmware. I upgraded my phone and now it has Acer_AV0K0_E39_1.020.00_AAP_GEN1. I was wondering if it is necessary to downgrade (flash the stock rom provided in this post) first, or I can simply flash CWM and then flash SuperSU.

Another question is that if I do downgrade first and then root, would the root be removed once upgraded via OTA?

I think you can directly flash CWM and flash SuperSU, it should work fine
The only thing is with CWM and Root, OTA may not work anymore, so you will have to unroot and maybe flash back the original Recovery to upgrade via OTA.

For E700 (E39) - I somehow get only partial root.

I use a utility called RASHR which backs up recovery but it failed with an error about busybox.

I have installed busybox as well, but still had the same error.

In anycase I found that the Root for Unite 2 works properly - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54536898&postcount=65

I'd rather use SuperSU if someone can find a solution.

I'm not sure I understand what you do
Did you follow my Guide ? Are you using CWM ?

yes i did... i used cwm and installed supersu successfully, it mostly works but for other apps like lucky patcher there's an error, the same goes for rashr (a tool i use backup/restore the recovery to get ota updates)

ok, in this case, there is maybe some Kernel protections, we will have to make an unsecure one (but not sure I will get the time for this)
and about Rashr , are you sure it's compatible?

Hi !

I should have my Z500 in a few days.

I'd like (of course ;) ) to root it and install CWM...
Can I help in any way to test it ? What are the main risks ? Bricking ?
Is it possible to do a full backup with SP flash tools before attempting anything ?

I saw that Jade and Z500 share almost the same specifications : same CPU, GPU, screen size & resolution.... Any chance that the JADE recovery will work on Z500 ? Or is this more complex ?

Regards :)

SP Flash Tool V3.1316.0.sn150

Acer_AV0K0_S510_RV0SRC04_WW_GEN1_user_signed.zip KitKat

Thx, added to FP

will this method work for single sim devices ?

CWM & Root will work on Single SIM Devices
But for the firmware part, you should not flash a Dual SIM Firmware on a Single SIM one.

+ FP updated with some new file for Z110 and Z120
