Feel free to correct me if I am wrong about this, but instead of installing both Java
JRE (Java Runtime Environment) version (32 & 64 bit) if we install the
JDK (Java Development Kit) version it's the only version we need to install.

My hTC Sync doesn't work either, for as long as I remember, I think it's driver related. If the drivers for USB mass storage and the ones for My HTC shows up in the Printer and other hardware, there is a conflict.
I can't remember how to fix it, I will try to locate the fix for it.
For those who are having problem with their HTC Sync, have a try at this method to install the correspondent drivers the right way.
Windows 7
To install the Android USB driver on Windows 7 for the
first time:
- Download the correspondent drivers for your Windows 7
here.
- Extract them in a Folder and remember the path of this Folder.
- Connect your Android phone device to your computer's USB port.
- Right-click on
Computer from your desktop or
Windows Explorer, and select
Manage.
- Select
Devices in the left pane.
- Locate and expand
Other device in the right pane.
- Right-click the device name or My HTC and select
Update Driver Software. This will launch the Hardware Update Wizard.
- Select Browse my computer for driver software and click Next.
- Click Browse and locate where you extracted the USB driver folder, and select :
androidusb.inf
- Click Next to install the driver.
Or,
to upgrade an existing Android USB driver on Windows 7 with the new driver:
- Download the correspondent drivers for your Windows 7
here.
- Extract them in a Folder and remember the path of this Folder.
- Connect your Android phone device to your computer's USB port.
- Right-click on
Computer from your desktop or
Windows Explorer, and select
Manage.
- Select
Device Manager in the left pane of the
Computer Management window.
- Locate and expand
Android Phone in the right pane.
- Right-click
Android Composite ADB Interface or
My HTC and select
Update Driver. This will launch the
Hardware Update Wizard.
- Select Install from a list or specific location and click
Next.
- Select
Search for the best driver in these locations and
uncheck Search removable media and
check Include this location in the search.
- Click
Browse and follow the path of your extracted USB drivers folder.
- Click
Next to upgrade the driver.
- Reboot your computer and try HTC Sync.
