Just wanted to let you guys know i tether and have been running into the recent tethering restriction message. I am on the 30 dollar a month 100 min unli. text and 5gigs of data. I tether my phone to my laptop and i use my VPN private internet access. Everything works great, Also if you dont already run a VPN i suggest getting one and anonomizing all your internet browsing, PIA is only 30 a year!

PIA? Care to explain. Also I found if you are using your own network and want to get around it I usually turn on airplane mode and the turn on my wifi since then I have had any issues with usb tethering.

I’m on Firefox 17 and using googlebot 2.1 (any googlebot works for me)… and the whole thing is working perfectly (inc Youtbe) with the added bonus of desktop view.

http://www.erikswan.net/browser_and_os/ gives me unidentified browser and OS, but advanced details show googlebot - I don’t know whether the Network could pick up on that suspicious googlebot thing, but so far so good.

My device is 2.3, routed and I'm using stock tether. I've come around to User Agent Switcher after spending weeks concentrating on apps that supposedly hide tether usage - they don't, not any more. PdaNet lasted only 10min (7MB download) before my Network discovered I was tethering. Orbot was a little better - 500MB before I was caught out again. So much focus has been on apps to do the job – and now they’re easily discovered by Networks, User Agent Switcher seems to have slipped under the radar.

And if you're going to download Youtube vids just do it on your mobile.

I can confirm User Agent Switcher with Googlebot 2.1 works. I only began tethering hard today because my internet connection is really bad. It was fine for about 10 hours and then I started getting the T-Mobile upsell on websites only (games/voip chat still work). I followed the advice here and installed the Firefox addon + imported the xml list of agents and it worked.

When my ISP goes down or is slow, I should be able to switch to my cell phone internet without having to pay extra, really. I barely use it as it is. Any company that locks down tethering so much that it becomes unusable will not get my business. When I had Sprint, they never gave me crap for tethering at all and I did a lot of it with them. I won't hesitate to go back if I have to.
