forum maintenance most probably, but you can still perform generic search on goggle using operator "site: forum.xda-developers.com"

Thanks very muchness for this - I agree it should be required reading, but I think some of you are being a little hard on us noobs. Not all of us fail to read or don't search - at times we simply don't know what words to search for. I was lucky in that I started with wanting to get Australian Stock on my S3 (posting here because I'm also looking to 'fix' my wife's GNote that has Emirates origin) and didn't jump straight to JB, so my kernel didn't mess things up.

The jargon and acronyms take time to learn, as does the structure of the software. Root is fairly easy to gain an understanding of, but in all my searches so far I have yet to find a clearly stated noob-level explanation for the difference between kernel and ROM. I'm reasonably OK on it from 25 years supporting PC's, but others will not have even the little amount of prior knowledge I came with.

I mean, you're not completely wrong; I have seen almost all those errors mentioned in the OP as I wandered the halls of root and flash, and even on day 1 I remember rolling my eyes over someone asking what was clearly the wrong question for a thread or even the forum. But make allowances for those who get confused by long lists of ROM's with little explanation of why they are different. e.g. it wasn't hard for a first-day noob (me ) to run across the following: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674286 which, even though now I can see the value in it, simply confused the hell out of me on day 1 and would probably scare the bejeesus out of someone with little experience with OS's and hardware in other realms.

Some noobs are Darwin Award types, but many are just taking their first step to becoming Devs or Expert Users.

hey there, i need help like hell, my brand new n7000 is bricked i guess,
i had ice cream candy, i m totally noob regarding rooting,ics and everything, i dont know **** about rooting, and i still tried rooting it, i downloaded some cw file and did seeing a video, fishing stupid of me, i dint even know what the hell is benefits of rooting mobiles. this is my first smart phone and i totally nailed it, now i m stuck on screen where a pc and mobile appears and "firmware upgrade encountered and issue, please select recovery mode in kies and try again",,,

in begining i was able to access download mode. but now cant even do that, cant charge my battries, when i try to enter download mode, it says "low battry cannot download" i put mobile in charger for liek 5 hours still its same, cant charge, i used charged battry of a friend, with it i can access download mode,plz help

i tried doign many things reading lots of threads and as i totally born child like i have 0% knowledge about this stuffs, still i got confused and i tried manythings, but dint help me,

so i went to samsung center they checked my phone and told me that there are 4 binary counts, so my warranty is dead i have to change the motherboard. the phone already costed me 620 dollars,
plz help me what to do, and plz step wise, i m dead if the phone doesnt start,
and if there is no way to unbrick it can any 1 tell me what is the cost of new mother board ?

Maybe reviving an old thread, but the last time I flashed a phone, it was running Windows Mobile. I'm a noob again, flashing an Android device for the first time. And a Note with stock ICS, no less. But the following helped me out quite a bit:
