fireboss: redownload all links above, it is possible that something went wrong with the download process and a bit is missing somewhere.
-copy the rom of your choice to your SDCard (Team Komin recommends Andromeda3, but any will work)
-put the phone into download mode and flash ursa minor tar file using Odin3 1.7
-let it run though it's operation until it boots normally.
-remove the usb cord, press and hold 3 buttons to reboot into recovery
-select zip from SDCard- Andromeda3.zip
Okey Dokey, Did that. I watched the install and there were errors:
E:Can't Mount /dev/block/st110 file exists came up 4 times, maybe more as it scrolled off the screen a bit.
Error Mounting /datadata/1 came up at least once

So I did it again remember your video that said if you get the errors do it again. :) And got the same errors so I kept going.

After the reboot, Ursa Minor screen for about 10 seconds, the animation screen ran and finally the Giorgio Armani screen. Thirty seconds after the Armani screen appears the phone vibrates once, 5 seconds later it vibrates twice. Forty five seconds after Armani appears the screen goes black (even with me touching it), 15 seconds after that the phone goes through the vibrate once, 5 seconds later vibrate twice cycle. Every thirty second after that the vibrate cycle repeats, The screen stays black but touching the buttons on the bottom makes them light up. I pulled the battery, waited and restarted but I get the same cycle. Droid Explorer connects when I attach the USB cable and I can look around. Now what?

OK after catching a post back in the original thread I went to a Mobile Tech Video - actually a 3 part video - on how to install a ROM. IT was a bit OBE but after watching it I did the following:
Used Super One Click to Root the phone when needed. Decided later I could probably have used AIO toolbox; maybe next time,
Using Odin One Click Restored the stock ROM
Did a Master Clear
Using AIO Toolbox I chose Flash Custom Rom and selected Andromeda 3
Installation went smooth as glass, Ursa Minor did her thing and the phone up and ready to go.

Thanks to Adam and everyone who helped for their help and patience. I don;t recall beating myself up like this doing the Windows phones but perhaps I have selective memory. Perhaps I learned something. . . .or not I never know :)

Now to donate to the folks whose tools allowed me to get this done;)

I'd like to make Andromeda3 into a full heimdall flash where you simply put the phone into download mode, select the files, hit start, and let the stock phone boot into Andromeda3.
That would be awesome! I've never quite understood the love affair with "update.zip" I guess I do get it on some level... it has been the most stable way change the software on your phone for a long time...

If i follow your steps is ok ?? because your coustom kernel and root is different than the Cognition that i want to install, or kernel is the same ???. Where can i find this info ? i am really lost and I want to install Cognition now!!

it doesnt matter.
cognition includes its own kernel.
you just copy the rom.zip to your /sdcard and flash it from recovery mode.....its really simple and there are plenty of instructions on this site.

no. not stock 2.2. what has always been recommended is stock 2.1, but it is NOT needed to go back to stock. and its ROM not ROOT. rooting gives you access to the rom that you are on, and is NOT required to load a new rom

i assume by buckup you mean backup?

a backup has nothing to do with the process of the actual rom/kernel flashing or bypassing recovery 3e. you have not provided enough info to do even the most basic of troubleshooting.

imagine that we have no idea what step you could possibly be talking about.
what exactly have you done up to this point?

I'm following the video and instructions but I am unable to get Odin3 to see my phone.

I have rooted the phone and run Titanium backup. I am unable to get the phone into download mode using the up/down vol and power button - it just goes to the battery, then circle arrow (whatever that is called) then repeats battery, circle arrow,... So, I have used 'adb reboot download' instead.

With my phone in download (with USB debugging on), I start Odin3 but it does not recognize the phone. I've tried this many times.

so, you followed the video instructions and already flashed the kernel in ODIN?
or you are running stock rooted with a backup done in titanium backup?
details. we needs em ;)

if you have not replaced the kernel as instructed or done the fix to get around recovery 3e, you need to STOP and re-read the forums, because you are ahead of yourself already.

did you plug the phone in AFTER you fired up ODIN? and does your COMPUTER recognize the phone in download mode? those are important steps

Yes - I have the USB drivers installed. When I connect (not in Download mode) ODIN3 can see my phone. However, when I reboot in download (by using adb reboot download) I get a driver error and ODIN3 does not see the phone.

Is this linked with my inability to boot into Download using the 3 button method?

try putting your phone in download mode and plugging it in. go into your device manager and make sure it is not listed with a !

OK - I did some digging and determined that my drivers where not working properly. Thanks for the tip.

I have reinstalled the drivers and ODIN3 is now recognizing the phone. I still cannot get into download mode by using the three buttons - I can get there using the 'adb reboot download' command though.

ODIN3 sees my phone on COM6 - but I cannot push the UrsaMinor.tar file. It just sits at the SetupConnection. I have tried unplugging the USB cable several times (as in the video). I've let it sit for 10 minutes.

OK - after a couple of attempts I have UrsaMinor installed. It's finicky, but I can get into the menu if I play around with the buttons. However, I do not have the Andromeda3.zip on the phones' sd card, so I need to get it there. I tried putting it on the external SD card, but I get an error when I try to mount it in ursa minor.

So, I figure I will just reboot the phone normally and put it directly onto the phone - BUT I am stuck at the URSA MINOR screen. How do I proceed to boot the phone? I've tried rebooting from the menu in URSA MINOR. I've popped the battery. but it still just sits at the ursa minor screen!
