either 1 should work, but not too many people play around with their Armani phone. We don't hear much from you guys, proceed at your own risk

I followed your guide using the heimdall method, and now on any rom, I get unknown imei and no service; no sim card pincode prompt. It works on stock froyo, but eventually my access point disappeared and 3G no longer works. I was thinking it was something to do with the modem, but I've flashed several on CM7 to no avail. I also noticed that flashing the speedmod kernel you listed also kills it. What do I do? I don't want to have to go back to Froyo bootloaders.

Also, once I flash this kernel, I can't go to CM7 because I get some kind of getprop error. I fixed this by going to MIUI first, but still

well first off you need to use a cm 7 kernel with cm 7. so of course speedmod won't work. you must also use a cm 7 modem with cm 7. as for the ImeI .... nothing in the instructions can touch your efs folder.. this is why you should always make backups before you mess with stuff.

but confusing that it will work for froyo, if IMEI is gone, ITS GONE!!!and did you lock your sim card? it doesnt normally require pin for sim unless you make it.
apn (access point names) settings can be changed/fixed at any time in settings menu > wireless and network > network > apn settings
there are also apps that dont need root to backup and restore your apn settings. (app name : apn backup and restore )

Well I got it to work. I reflashed your package (bootloaders included) and my connection appears to be working so far. I'm not sure what happened but everything seems fine now on CM7. I don't think the efs was touched since it still worked on stock froyo earlier

imei is in efs.so your problem assessment must be a little off. no problem its all good. glad to hear its working. check the edit in the post above for more info

might want to backup efs folder once you know its all good. just for future "in-case". its the only important backup that you cant restore with flashing to stock

followed the CyanogenMOD 7 instructions and the captivate buttons don't work or even light up. The volume and lock button do work but bottom 4 don't. I went back to stock 2.2 (thanks to TRusselo's guide) and tried again with update nightly MOD, same problem..
can't even access settings, from what i remember i had 2.6.32.9 kernal with froyo 2.2 stock rogers ROM..
Where did I go wrong?

the nightlies arent exactly for new users, but are you sure you got the captivate version of cm7?
Yup, I used latest nightly twice for cap, same problem.. I'm going to give stable a try, I also used the speedrom kernel provided. when installing cm7 on the cap, it kept re-booting:confused: and i had to physically remove the microsd for it to resume, maybe that could be the culprit..

i used the roms provided by Atinm captivatemtd

Thank you so much for your guide. I've had my Captivate for a year and finally got sick of issues and performance so I decided to root and flash CM7. I tried two other methods that would not work before I stumbled across your tutorial. It worked great the first time. Of course, probably because I'm brand new to this, I've run into some issues.

At first, I couldn't add an account, but flashing the Google apps .zip fixed that. However, now, I can't seem to download any apps from the market. I can't download new apps or ones that are already downloaded to my account. I get an error that says, ""App Name" could not be downloaded due to an error." This gives me two questions. First, how can I overcome this so I can download apps? Secondly, is there an easy way to re-download all my prior apps, both paid and non-paid?

Also, my phone is now constantly trying to connect to Google Talk and cannot, giving an error in the notification bar. Any ideas as to why I can't connect to Google Talk?

I now realize that these may be more specific questions concerning CM7 rather than your process, but since you seem to actually answer people's questions, I figured I'd start here. Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

HI

My captivate i897 has been bricked (I think soft).

It start and after boot logo restarts.

I tried to enter download mode with key combination vol up/down, power, remove/insert battery, plug USB, but non of these worked, I've tried all combinations :(( I think volume buttons don't work.

pls tell me if there is any method to enter download mode without using vol up/down buttons

thanks in advance

You have a boot loop. It boots, then loops. You probably have the wrong kernel installed for the ROM that you were trying to use. There are many ways to get into download mode and recovery mode they are in the first and second posts. Either figure it out which kernel you are supposed to be using and flash it through CWM or get into download mode and flash to stock.

And now for the usual information that you were supposed to give with any problem you experience. what Rom are you on? What Kernel are you using? Also go back and read post one and two again. Try to figure out where you went wrong

thanks for reply

first of all problem is that I can't enter download mode, I tried all combinations from your post but they don't work with my captivate.

I wonder if there is any solution without using JIG :(((

Once again like I said in the last post what Rom were you using? And what Kernel were you using? Do you have recovery mode? CWM recovery? For some reason every noob thinks that their phone is special and recovery mode and download doesn't work. They do, trust me. You can always CWM flash a stock rom, like my rooted kk4.

yes, or if you read this guide... you could have skipped rooting and 3e fix, and just odin flash a kernel that has cwm built into it. also... rom manager stopped supporting captivate long time ago... so cwm is cwm2. and you wont be able to flash gingerbread. as all gingerbread roms use cwm3 and it uses a different install script format. ..... once again read this guide and you will understand more.

Yes i rooted with out readin...

With that being said can i flash a froyo rom, lets say Cognition 4.5.3 right from
cwm2 with out needeing a diff kernel or modem?
(on the roms page it does not provide a kernel or modem so im guessing yes)

or can i just wipe everything start fresh follow your step and flash a GB rom right away?

im very familiar with Odin and recovery mode (came from a fascinate)
so i know what im doing with that

Thnx once again

All custom ROMs come with a kernel and modem, they are a complete package. You can however flash custom kernel or modem any time after the ROM to your own preference.

At the moment you can flash any fro yo ROM that you want. Or flash gingerbread kernel with Odin and then cwm flash a gingerbread ROM no need to wipe our go back to stock, as all the ROMs do the wiping during install, unless other-wise noted.

If you read my guide in the first post you will find out that speedmod kernel, Can flash both froyo and gingerbread ROMs.

Odin speedmod, then cwm ANY rom. basically then just cwm unless switching between 2.2 or above.

For 2.2 i highly recommend firefly 3.0 with onix kernel for speed and battery
