just flash the bootloader. it doesnt change anything noticable. it works with all android versions.

then boot flash a CWM3 kernel (or speedmod 2.5CWM yes) to flash a gingerbread rom.

Since official GB came out Jan 10th, does anyone know if I still need GB bootloaders when flashing from official GB?

Thanks!

My captivate now has official GB from at&t......flashed through kies.....

Now if I want to flash a custom GB rom do I need the rom versions with bootloaders or the versions without the bootloaders......

I'm thinking I don't need GB bootloaders anymore b/c my phone already got them with the official GB flash

Ok I have a question.
I flashed the i9000 bootloaders even though I had the Stock GB bootlaoders (big n00B mistake but nothing bad happened) I flashed a couple of ROMS and have finally settled on ics 4.0.3 rc 15 from team hacksung.
I have never had a problem where I'm stuck in a bootloop or anything like that. I have always been able to get into CWM recovery.
The phone is working fantastic. I'm not experiencing any of the sleep deaths or charge deaths that have been posted by some ppl on teamhacksung ics forum.

Pawtip just recently posted that he thinks the i9000 bootloaders are the cause of the sleep and charge deaths, and that in his opinion cm9 for the captivate will not recommend or support the i9000 bootloaders.
So in your opinion should I stick with the i9000 booloaders and be happy everything is working? or should I flash back to stock cappy booloaders?

Also is there any real performance differences between the 2 bootloaders (cappy vs i9000)
Thanks so much

P.S big thanks to Trusselo. It was by your guidance that I got on this road to flashing and I love it. Even though I did not take the time like I should have to follow your guide (flashing the i9000 when I did not have to)

There is no noticeable difference between the boot loaders, Besides the button combos. However some of the more resent i9000 based ROMs require the I9000 boot loaders. So it may bee the best for full compatibility.

Many captivate users experienced sleep death issues way before gingerbread even existed for any device, let alone the boot loaders for i9000.

Yeah I was just reading up that it may be a hardware issue with captivate produced before November 2010.
One more question. If I want to flash a kernel say icy glitch. do I download the captivate one or the i9000 one? Guess what I'm asking is my phone technically an i9000 or a i897 based upon what bootloader that I'm using?
I'll make sure to pass on any info you give me.
Thanks again

I'm new to this flashing rom and it would be nice if you can a few questions of mine:

1. Does the odin method work with any custom or only some specific roms? If it only work with some specific roms, can you name them?

2. Why is the i897 gingerbread bootloader neccessary?

3. I read that Titanium Backup will only back up apps. Is there any app for backing up my music?

4. I have seen people flashing their cappy using rom manager on youtube, is that a good alternative?

Thank you. Sorry for all these questions. I actually wants to know whats going on besides of just following the instruction.

1.Works with any rom
2.GB Bootloaders are backward compatible
3.Use external SD card.. apps get wiped but music doesnt
4.No RomManager is only good for 2.1 stick with CWM Recovery to flash roms

Two more questions:
1. Do I need to restore it back to 2.1 eclair ( right now at 2.2 froyos ) before I do any of the steps?

2. Does installing the gingerbread bootloader makes my cappy gingerbread firmware or its based on the specific rom? Will I need to install the gingerbread bootloader ever again if I want to flash a new rom?

1. no.. when you flash a rom it replaces what is on your phone, so it doesnt matter what you are running now. Same thing goes later, when you get bored of you first rom, and want to flash a second rom. Just flash it. no need to go back to stock.

2. huh? gingerbread bootloaders let you run gingerbread or newer versions of android. you have to flash it if you want to run a rom that has been made in the past 4 months...

a long long time ago before we made the roms "wipe" the device in the install script before flashing.

if a rom wants you to flash to stock the rom page will say so. but you 99.99999% wont see that now days.

now its : heres a rom. flash it in cwm. done.

you know about titanium backup? to backup all your apps and app settings, then restore them on your new rom? if you dont theres plenty of info about it on XDA and it has its own FAQ and how to website somewhere...
