Awesome man!!! I went through the threads in Dev section, nothing worked. And your method worked like a charm and it was on the first try! Really appreciate this.

This thread really helped me in what I needed to know before flashing ICS.

I was worried about the AT&T Bootloaders.... when I already had them installed. I almost screw up my capt if not for this.

Heimdall issue with other usb driver

I used the Heimdall Method from the main post. Thanks a lot!! I got ICS running and my headache is over.

I do have another one, though- my first run on the Heimdall driver install, I hit something wrong, and it killed my Logitech wireless mouse drivers. Now I can't figure out how to replace them! And can't find it in device manager, either! Any suggestions what I can do?

This is one of the reasons why I don't use heimdall, and never have. I don't like the idea of having to screw around with the second set of drivers.
The only thing that I can think of to suggest is try plugging it into a different USB port as the Heimdall drivers only get installed for that one port

you do not need to gradually update. flash what you want to run.

How to I access the internal SD memory?

I have to apologize but I am a noobe.
I wanted to flash the Dark Knight ROM onto a stock Catpivate (KK4)
with the 3e Loader. I followed the Odin instruction on page 1 skipping steps
4-6 as per instruction. Unfortunately, I also forgot to copy the new ROM
onto the internal SD memory. I used the i897-Speedmod-K13E-GBbootloaders-One-Click.jar for the loader. Now, I can get into the recovery mode and flash new ROM. I just can not access the internal SD memory to copy a new ROM file to install nor can it see the external SD card. My phone will start but it will just stuck at the front load page where it saids it is a Galaxy S SGH-i897 phone and wouldn't go any further.

Can someone help? Thank you very much.

3e loader? no such thing. there is 3e recovery, but that is stock and doesnt allow flashing custom roms. you flashed speedmod k13e kernel which has clockwork recovery (cwm) which is what you want. the bootloader upgrade is only needed for gingerbread roms. and a separate thing than recovery or kernels.

also if you used the .jar application you werent following the odin instructions. the jar is heimdall. < you may have read the wrong instructions.

one of the first steps, in both odin and heimdall instructions was to put the rom on your internal sdcard. < follow instructions.

to fix your situation, boot into recovery, go to "Mounts and storage" > " Mount USB storage" > Plug your phone into computer, copy rom.

please slow down and follow instructions before doing things. other phones are not as forgiving as samsung galaxy phones. with many other phones, you would have an expensive paperweight right now. not fixable.

Thank you very much

Thank you for the rapid respond and patience. I was expecting a verbal lashing. You're 100% right. Somehow I got the two setup mixed together. I will follow the instruction to the letter from now.

I was able to mount the USB storage and copy the Dark Knight ROM into the root of the internal USB storage.

Dark_Knight_v5.5_I897.zip

Now I will
1. Wipe data/factory reset
2. wipe cache partition
3. install zip file (Dark_Knight_v5.5_I897.zip) from sdcard.

(I have already done a nandroid backup already)

Then hopefully, everything will reboot to the new ROM.
Thank you for the save from my stupidity. I really appreciated it.

Very good guide.
Unfortunately, I had to learn the download mode glitch on my own.
The phone shows the connection error screen but it was actually in download mode and I was able to flash a rom. But before I figured it out, I was going crazy and didn't know what to do.
This only happened to me when I was switching from 2.2 to 2.3 stock.

mad props for this guide. i thought i was stuck after installing speed because my phone just said galaxy and wouldnt go anywhere. i looked through the thread, and you kept telling people to read before asking questions. i finally realized i could just reboot into recovery via adb (i had been using adb for getting into dl mode). thanks again man, finally successfully flashed my first captivate rom after soft bricking my phone 30 times in the past week. props to 42 as well, and everyone in these forums. the captivate is a much bigger beast than my old eris, but you guys have made it all possible. hopefully i can put my homemade jig in drawer and forget about it now :D

You didn't need to use adb to reboot into recovery you could have just used the button combo.

word, i was scared of unplugging and i still had cmd open anyways. plus i had to do a tear down the other day and clean the phone as my vol up button wasnt working. not to mention that i had been using odin to stock it after all my bricks which was killing my button combo ability. good to know its working again though. :D

I have andromeda3 (2.2) on my captivate can I still use the "Heimdall Method (Any OS)" part to flash the GB loader and then boot into recovery to flash an ICS mod from there? Or could I just use this thread in order to put my captivate back to stock and then flash the GB loader from this thread, and from there flash a ICS mod?

I'm still trying to get my head around on how to jump from 2.2 to ICS

ICS runs on any bootloader. so can skip that part. basically boot into cwm and flash ICS. ei just flash it.

THANK YOU so much! I've been reading many threads in the last few days and it was never clear to me if I could just flash ICS with the cwm I already had. I'm guessing that all the cwm backups and stuffs will work too or will the ICS change the kernel and cwm version in any way that would render this backups unusuable to the updated versions now in place?
