By flashing another kernel you mean flashing another rom? Like the andromeda3 I have right now?
no i meant kernel.

kernel is a part of a rom. ... usually... kinda. but isnt...

the kernel is to a rom, like an engine is to a car. Different engines are built to work with different cars and you can just swap them and get different performance. Kernels are very similar.
its a collection of processor and memory management instructions bundled with much of your device drivers, and on the captivate the cwm recovery is bundled inside the kernel as well. Different kernels are built for different versions of android, and built with different modifications, memory management... ect.

Roms generally come with a kernel, but you dont have to continue using that kernel. you are free to try any other kernel that works with your rom. but sometimes you dont need the kernel to work with your rom if you only intend to use the kernel for cwm to flash a rom or restore a backup, as this guide does and as i was explaining a couple posts back.

At the end of the Heimdall method my captivate just shows a blank screen with the Galaxy S logo, the captivate series and the samsung branding at the bottom. Is that what is supposed to show? I'm unable to get into recovery mode (but I can still get into download mode if I take out the battery to turn the phone off).

PS: I executed this guide with my phone having SlimICS as rom.

this guide was for starting from stock, not custom rom. with custom roms you just boot into recovery and flash the new custom rom. trust me recovery still works. hold the buttons longer after the screen turns on.

i think what you are trying to explain is the boot image changed?? yeah cuz you flashed a different kernel..

please try to be more descriptive in you "i have a problem" posts...

I am assuming you just flashed the kernel and are unable to get into recovery to flash your new rom... your recovery does still work. thousands of people follow this guide. it works for every single person.

and unless you are running mac or linux.... why the hell wouldnt you use odin????

I need some help everyone. I just got a captivate that is already rooted but it has a stock gingerbread on it. I just wanted to know if i could still flash a CM rom using the current recovery. The phone has firmware 2.3.4 and the kernel version is 2.6.35-7I897UKH3-CL461307.

I know that i might have to flash a new kernel with cwm but how do i go about doing that using the current one?

Simple. Spend a few days reading. Having someone tell you what to do will not help you understand what you are doing.

I'll give you one hint : Odin

Thanks for the hint but I ended up using a completely different method. I went to the Cyanogenmod Wiki and I found the step by step instructions for installing CWM and it worked like a charm. I installed the latest stable CM7 and now i'm waiting for a stable CM9 or 10.

Captivate is not i9000...
No jelly bean Rom is out of beta...

If you want everything to work flash a Rom made for your phone and isn't beta

Or check your apn settings...

now I flashed with cappy (captivate) and everything is excellent, it is twice as fast as stock rom and battery lasts longer.
The only issue is, the responsiveness of dialpad is low.

Boot into recovery and flash a different rom. you got in a boot loop because you're kernel does not match your ROM
