Well... what Rom are you using? I think devil kernel is for ics roms or jelly bean roms...

But this guide is for flashing from stock, you aren't on stock, are you?

I suggest reading and learning before doing.

U must unzip the file on ur pc and copy the .tar out to ur desktop or wherever u want. Then run Odin, select PDA and navigate to the .tar kernel and select it.

If u flashed the speedmod kernel, u ought to be able to do a factory reset/wipe data in that cwm recovery and then proceed with the install of ur Rom of choice per that Rom's install instructions.

This post helped me a lot. I was running firefly 3.0 and tried to flash helly bean over it with no luck. From there I reflashed the onyx kernel. Flashed the GB boot loaders then helly bsan and bam it worked great. Also flashed it to my wife's unrooted running stock 2.3.5. Thanks guy great job.

well, i dunno I just directed it to the speedmodkernel zip and it worked. dunno if it was supposed to but it did. before I flashed the rom, in the temporary CW recovery it wouldnt let me wipe anything, it would just freeze at formatting data. but I just flashed CM10, it flashed the new recovery, rebooted recover, flashed the rom again then it let me factory reset and wipe cache and all that good stuff, so all is well now.;)

So I flashed the speedmod kernel provided in the OP, but I forgot to put the actual rom on my internal SD before doing that. Now when I boot my Captivate, it shows the SGH-I896 screen, then switches to Galaxy S SGH-1897 screen and just hangs there.

I have an I896 Captivate (obviously) and was running 2.3 Gingerbread before flashing the kernel.

Any idea what to do?

You have cwm if you installed the kernel. You can take sd card out and put in your PC. Should be able to adb push a file too

Reboot ur phone into cwm recovery and connect to ur pc. Then navigate in the recovery to "mount usb" storage and u can copy the Rom over to ur phone. Unmount. And install Rom.
The speedmod kernel is not gonna boot ur phone. It is only so u will have a cwm.

I am not rally sure why but you do need to get the gb bootloaders it is a requisite for you to be able to Install ics or jb. I all you need to do is download the rom you want and just flash the speed mod kernel with odin then boot in to recovery and flash the rom you want

The gingerbread boot loaders were only needed for gingerbread from my experience. I have not needed them to run ICS board jellybean, however some users experience less issues using the gingerbread boot loaders from the I9000

Yep and after you go through that just boot in to recovery by holding both volume up and down and power buttons together then let go of power button after the at&t or whatever carrier you have splash screen then you can go from there
