flashing / rooting concerns ?

my (rooted) captivate WAS running on ICS this thread of yours seems to be exactly what i need! except for it's gear'd towards froyo & gingerbread.
Now correct me if i'm wrong please ! isn't ICS ( version ? don't get me lying! ) superior to the froyo & Gingerbread ?

Unhappy Stuck on bootscreen
!!! HELP !!! I'm very wet behind the ears when it comes to this!!! HENSE my username. this started after connecting my cap. to a pc with intentions of exporting some pics. that initial (1st) and Only pc notification about detecting a usb device, my cousin sitting down at the monitor clicked outside the bubble message. Now from this point on which was several attempts i would get could recognize device msg. I did not know this was gonna be the results, i can actually remember noticable gliches and flaws progressively worse and worse. icons looking like they had a bulb burning out, awful lag in dialer and or any commands. I know now after reading similar posts my attempts to back-up,recover, i did several restore sessions, wiped data & system in a last ditch effort to get my phone back! i was on the road out of my state. not a comforting situation. I'D REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP! I'M LEARNING AS I CRAWL ALONG HERE, WITH THAT BEING SAID I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH ALOT OF THE LINGO! symbols , abbreviations , etc

First of all yes ICS is newer than gingerbread, it goes in alphabetical order. Cupcake, doughnut, Eclaire, froyo, gingerbread, honeycomb, ice cream Sandwich, jelly Bean, and soon to be, key lime pie.

Second connecting to a computer should not cause your phone to stop from booting. Something else must of happened. You are probably going to have to flash back to stock using Odin from a pc, and upgrade again. You should never flash your phone when you don't have permanent use of a computer such as being on the road. This is why.

Something that you can try doing is built into recovery, click factory reset. Reboot.

If that doesn't work once again boot into recovery and flash the ROM again that you are currently running.

If that doesn't work you will have to flash to stock using Odin. you can find instructions, Odin and stock images in the development section.

Still in 3e recovery mode

I installed the tar.md5 and kernal.tar file using the ODIN method but when I go into recovery mode, I'm suppose to still be in 3e recovery mode?

Umm.. there is only one thing to flash with Odin.

Not completely sure where you are in the process, but I'm thinking no. You did something wrong

Well - I didn't get any errors when I flashed the i897 gingerbread bootloader upgrade and ran the speedmod kernell in ODIN. Should I try it again?

The speed mod kernel recovery will look a lot like 3e recovery except it will say clockwork mod across the very top. If it doesn't say clockwork mod recovery then the kernel didn't flash. Don't bother flashing the boot loaders again

I figured it out - the computer didn't recognize the phone .... such a simple problem!

Hi guys. I'm planning to flash helly bean on my captivate currently unrooted/stock 2.3.4 (UCKH3). I've read the instructions and they seem pretty simple and well written. Just wanted to double check that nothing has changed from what OP says as of today (tried to read through most pages of this thread). Do these instructions still hold good for my scenario ?

Thanks in advance folks.

I made the mistake of leaving my SD card in the phone and I thought I had a serious problem because the phone just get rebooting, started to unzip the files, then rebooted again. When I took the SD card out, the process completed without a problem. So, make sure you take out the SD card and the SIM card. I'm not 100% positive, but I believe if you leave the SIM card in you can end up blanking out your IMEI and then you have to start from scratch with the factory installs of 2.2.1, etc. It happened to me and since then I always make sure to take the SIM out.

I'm not sure why or how it happens but it doesn't on every Cappy. I guess better be safe than sorry but it never happened to me :good:

Thank you for the warning note bob. I usually remove both the ext sd and sim before I do anything with my devices. I have seen a few videos of the phone booting into the OS and asking for a SIM security pin. I do not have one on mine and I do not know if it will ask. It will be interesting to see what happens on that front.

SIM security pin has to be manually activated so unless you do it yourself, it shouldn't happen.
