So at this point I can disconnect the usb, pop out the battery and do the two button combo plus inserting the usb to get back into download mode? I see no other options on the recovery screen to reboot into download mode.

(Edit)

Success! I followed the instructions, made a mistake somehow, got stuck in a bootloop, figured out how to reboot back into cwm, and solved the issue! Thank you for guiding me on my first flash!

Build 1011

I have seen other threads mention issues with one-click odin on build 1010+. I have a 1011 cappy and was wondering if anyone has successfully tested any of the gingerbread one-clicks on the 1010+ builds.

TRusselo, Consider simplfing the process you outlined above...

Heimdall One-Click can be used for a much quicker one-shot method. There's a list of applicable packages here: http://teamkomin.com/index.php?dir=Captivate/

You could use the Gingerbread bootloaders package and the TalonDEV package to upgrade bootloaders and get the latest CWM on the device in the easiest maner possible, also this will work on ALL platforms and not just Windows.

Put device in download mode
Click the flash button and hold the Volume + and volume - buttons until the device restarts
Click the Flash bootloaders checkbox
Click the flash button
the device should restart into recovery mode, if not, place the device in recovery mode
Select your ROM

You'll just need a Heimdall one-click made. Would you like one? I can remix those two packages into one and make the one-cick I described above.

This is my second time flashing my cappy. It is an att branded phone, but with rogers stock froyo rom 2.2
After reading the gingerbread rogers 2.3.3 warranty thread, I followed the first set of instructions of flashing it. My question is do I still need to follow the second part in order for GB stock rom to be totally installed?
The home screen does not look any different. Only the notification bar has changed, ie. batt status, 3g....
There are no new wallpapers installed either nor it doesn't turn off like a tv effect either on yt videos I've seen.

Model number shows sgh-i896
Firmware 2.3.3
baseband i896uxkh2
kernel 2.6.35.7-i896uxkh2-cl296008
build gingerbread.uxkh2

adam- what packages? kernel/bootloader and solo kernel packages? sure can do it as method 2. personally i dont use heimdall, pissed me off once and never went back. not to mention linux hates my motherboard so ill never need heimdall there. also while heimdall is easy, it has alot of buttons and things that are confusing to the type of noob i expect to read these instructions, but lets do it for the non windows- noob.

Worked fine. Just needed a little encouragement I guess. Thanks.
just remembered im 10.11 DUH!

what second part? if gingerbread booted up, it is installed. kh2 is gingerbread.
and the rogers stock only has different bloat apps not different theme. its stock. stock is stock. and all stock IS the same with different default settings and carrier bloat apps.

You've obviously never tried heimdall one-click. Its severely easier than Odin. Drivers and dependencies are auto-installed. There's no selecting packages. There's no wiggle room for error.

Also, heimdall has evolved since you last used it. Its a bit more complicated to set up a package, but its much easier to flash because the new tar.gz packaging format.

Make a heimdall package from the tar.gz files in those JARs above and then run it through the one-click packager. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348392

A one-click has the same instructions for Linux, windows and Mac. Also its safer than an Odin package in several ways.

This is far less complicated

I'll create a one-click later tonight with everything required, follow your outline and post in here.

Oh heimdall has a one click too? I thought it was just 1 click packages that work with the regular heimdall. Ah. and I might give it another go now, but who knows. I have never had problems with odin. and window 7 always installs all the drivers for me automatically off the internet. I have never had to install drivers for my captivate

This will be greatly appreciated Adam! I'm a noob at this, and have been waiting on a KK2 Odin 1-Click to become available, but after reading up on your Heimdall posts and how it works, it sure looks like the most foolproof way to go, especially for a first-timer.

Currently running Captivate I897/JH7 (UGH!), but at least it's rooted.

why are you putting so much effort into flushing a stock rom? Kk2 I'd only stock.

and you flash it from c w m. and actually the heimdall package will end up making you flash it in cwm as well... ??

I find heimdall one-clicls to be several times more valuable than a CWM package. I probly wont make one, but a update.zip is only an update. Update.zip does not contain the full firmware and you have to have a base to start with. A full download mode flash requires no dependencies. No random errors because of base packages... full flashes are cleaner. Noone wants to put in the extra effort to make a full flash though.

Ensure you have the lastest version of Java here
Download Easy CWM and Bootloaders Gingerbread here

  1. Take phone out of box (should be done)
  2. Find a neat-o ROM from Captivate Development Section and get it onto your internal SD card (the one you cant remove) download using phone internet browser or download and copy to phone using PC.
  3. Boot phone into DOWNLOAD mode
  4. Start Heimdall One-Click "EasyCWM and Gingerbread bootloaders"
  5. follow directions (if any) given to install Heimdall drivers and dependencies (if required on your platform). On windows, the USB port your device is plugged into will now use heimdall drivers, if you have Samsung drivers installed, they will remain on all other USB ports.
  6. Click "flash". Note: if you wish to upgrade bootloaders, hold Volume+ and Volume- so as to reboot into Download Mode after the flash otherwise skip the next step.
  7. Check the Flash Bootloaders checkbox and flash again to upgrade to Gingerbread bootloaders (this only needs to be done once)
  8. Reboot into RECOVERY mode
  9. Use volume buttons to navigate up/dn and pwr for enter.
  10. Select "flash zip from sd card"
  11. Find your rom of choice and select Yes

Adam,

I took the plunge and followed your guide. Everything seemed to work fine with the flashing, including the GB bootloaders. Now I am unable to reboot into recovery mode. All I get is the Talon boot screen, with the blue progress bar completing, then it hangs there.

Battery out/in, vol up&down pressed, pwr pressed - 5 seconds... get white AT&T screen, release pwr, get Talon boot screen, not recovery. Tried many many times with several variations. (Recovery mode was working before).

I even repeated the Hemidall flashing again, and it too went smoothly, but still can't get into recovery.

Would flashing a different kernel (corn seems to be the latest fav) be the next thing I should try?

Not to hijack from Adam, but if you're on the GB bootloaders and looking for a way to get into CWM to flash a rom (and you've had success with a Heimdall one-click), you could try the one I have in my signature. It should be what you need. It's Heimdall one-click, no bootloaders, stock KH3 with CWM already baked in.

Thanks for the assist. OK, I'll give this a try.

My goal was to get KK2/corn/Illuminate 2.1.1 based on all the positive press, but am happy to take additional baby steps to get there, especially if it gets me out of unstuck mode!

jmtheiss - I'm not able to download your Heimdall KH3 exe. The hosting site say "file has been downloaded the maximum number of times possible".

Oh, sorry about that. I'll have to see if I can reupload it and/or find a new host. Give me about 30 minutes and try it again.

-Update:
Ok, new link is up.
