stuck with SGH-I897 firmware upgrade.

Hi,

I am using Samsung captivate AT&T SGH-I897. Eclair 2.1 version. I have attempted to upgrade the firmware to Gingerbread using the below link.

Samsung Captivate™ Android 2.3 Upgrade
(AT&T Cell Phones: How Do I Update Samsung Captivate (SGH-i897) Phone from Android 2.1 (Eclair) To Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) using Kies Mini On My Window's PC)

Unfortunately, In the middle of the process, internet got disconnected. As a result, I am unable to upgrade nor recover.

--> I have downloaded Odin3 1.82. I need to flash it back to stock firmware. I think i would need .PIT file and .rar/.tar file ( PDA File).
--> I could able to get the .PIT file. But I am confused to use the appropriate PDA file.
--> Please suggest If I can use the PDA file that I is related to i897 gingerbread boot-loader upgrade ( or) should I provide the original manufacturer firmware

Custom ROM upgrade question

I have a Captivate SGH-I897 4.1.2 , 3.0.52 Devil Kernel, Jelly_Helly_Cappy AOKP Salty Bean V32. Build JZO54K. I want to beta test 4.2.1 Slimbean or Saltybean ROM's. I will be migrating from a Devil to Semaphore Kernel. I'm fine with that; however I have seen several posts about problems restoring (rolling back) to the Devil kernel after an upgrade. My questions are:

Are the Semaphore kernel and recovery ROM (CWM) included in the Slim and Salty Bean install zip?

Do I have the needed boot loaders, etc already on my phone and are there any other steps from the general upgrade instructions on the developer thread needed to make the upgrade, rollback go more smoothly from Devel to Semaphore kernels?

I would ask this on the dev thread but I don't have permission. Much respect and props to all of your work here, I appreciate it!!

This thread is for flashing custom ROMs from stock. you are already on custom.

All you need to do is boot into recovery and flash the new ROM

Get back in download mode and try reflashing it.

PS.: It can take a while to boot up so unless it boot loops, wait about 5-7min for it to boot up.

Thank you. I picked a JB ROM flashed it but I didn't like it. It's too slow and now I have the same boot screen from that ROM regardless what I re-flash. Is there a way to fix it? What would be a good ROM to use from stock 2.1 to maybe GB?

JB ROM that is too slow!? Mind telling me which one you tried?

Going back to stock 2.1 or 2.2 is a bad idea as you will have to flash bootloaders = chance to brick.

Once you're on GB bootloaders, you should flash Odin KK4 without bootloaders to get back to stock.

Can you explain a little more?

1. I flash ROM 4.2.1 from Team Remics then I found out it doesn't have google play etc.. and everytime boot up the phone I got an error "Invalid IMEI"

2. I then re-flash 4.2.1 captivating. "Invalid IMEI"

Feel uncomfortable with the error so I use one click to flash back to 2.1

Ok Downloading KK4 no bootloader

Thanks

No i897 Gingerbread Bootloaders installed screen. Heed all warnings about flashing bootloaders and then flash the i897 GB BLs to resolve this issue.
---- See the OP of this thread to get the GB Bootloaders.
And please read all of the Stickied threads in the General, Q&A (not necessarily the ones about specific roms) and in the Dev forum. There is a lot of info that will prove very helpful with just a little searching.

After re-flash one click KK4 no bootloader I got this screen every time boot the phone. Can you help? ( I flashed again with same result)
That's why I mentioned the bootloaders in my previous posts. If you flash back to 2.1, you flash the Eclair bootloaders = you will need to reflash the GB bootloaders.

Losing IMEI can be solve by flashing Odin KK4 (It's stock firmware as well, just got GB instead of Eclair). If you don't wanna have to return to stuck if it happens again, backup your EFS folder. The error pops up again = you replace your efs folder with your backup one.

As for the app you were missing, if you read full OP instructions (first and 2nd post) of the ROM you're flashing, you'll see that you need to flash the Gapps after flashing the ROM (Gapps = Google apps).

S3 root/flash, now Captivate

It's weird, but having rooted my two S3s and flashed numerous ROMs, kernels and Gapps, and my Nexus 7 as well, I'm looking at my totally stock Captivate (which is now my music machine) and wonder if I can root with Odin and flash to 4.2.1 ROM, Gapps and kernel as easily. What versions of anything do I need to be concerned with? Build is Gingerbread.UKKK4, with firmware 2.3.5.

Current S3 ROMs are CarbonROM and Vanilla Rootbox, both with KT kernel. N7 is PA 3 with PIE and M-Kernel. What do you suggest for I897 Captivate?

You already have gingerbread and it's bootloaders so you are able to flash anything you want.

I found a tar file (I897UCKF1-AutoRoot) and stock kernel (KK4), flashed with Odin...rooted.

Needed CWM, so I tried Speedmod kernel, but it would not go past splash screen, Corn kernel was better and ran fine. Finally went with CM 10.1, one of few 4.2.1 ROMs for Captivate. It runs very well and makes phone much faster than Samsung TW ROM.

always boots into safe mode

Hello, my captivate has been running legend 7 for a while now. I've tried upgrading to both ICS and job multiple times however every time the phone boots its in safe mode. This only happens on anything over gingerbread and on every ROM I've tried. Research says to pull battery and restart and to not plush button as the menu button activates safe mode but none of that works for me. My volume down button is unresponsive. Does any one have an idea of what might be causing my problem? I'm starting to think my phone is just incompatible with anything over gingerbread. Thanks
