After Gapps. I generally then flash some nightlies (depending on how ambitious I am) without wiping anything.

If my reply helped you, please click on thanks to let me know.
After entering on CMW i dont have to wipe nothing ?I dont care about my apps but im just worried if the apps installed in sd card will crash with the new ROM ;)

What you've done is basically root by flashing kernel and its version of CWM. When you flash CM, it will overwrite that kernel with its kernel and its CWM. You're not going to run rooted stock with first kernel, so you really don't need to wipe anything. Wiping does nothing to data partition. If you are concerned about app compatibility, you can remove apps by resetting phone and removing user data in recovery.

You're not going to run rooted stock with first kernel, so you really don't need to wipe anything. Just go into recovery and flash ROM and Gapps.
I edited my previous post ;)

Can someone tell me why this is not working? I'm getting a big red FAIL when I try to flash the first md5. I just pulled the captivate out of the box so it's all stock. What am I doing wrong? I have two other android phones and a tablet and those all rooted pretty easily. I already have the ROM on the phone, just need to get into CWM.

Flashing the first md5? Are you sure you're following the instructions in the OP?

back to stock

Hello

I have successfully followed your steps many timesand have flashed different roms on my samsung captivate. I do have a question though. If i want to return back to stock what do i do? I have used Odin couple of times and then it gets stuck while in the process and i guess i am getting bricked. Do I need to do something else before i do an odin flash?

Thank you

Odin just does that some times. Reboot your computer and try again.

Odin is the best way to return to stock, unless you want rooted stock, there are quite a few stock rooted ROMs in cwm flashable zips. Run an "advanced search" in the android captivate development section for the word stock in "title only"

Alright so my friend is rooted with a one click root he did a long time ago. He is currently on gingerbread. I read the instructions and it says he needs to install speedmod kernel in Odin then it says to go to recovery. Does installing the speed mod kernel tar give him CWM also or do I have to instal that on my own

Yes, it includes a customized version of CWM. If he then flashes, say, CM ROM, it will include its own version of CWM that will replace the one with speedmod.

Yes. SIM card is completely separate from phone memory. extSD will not be touched by flashing. Resetting and wiping are restricted to partitions in phone memory.
If i uncheck auto reeboot on odin before flashing speedmod the phone will not boot automatically right?
So i dont have to remove and put batery in again?Lol i dont want to remove the bodyglove thats all !

You're going into this with the wrong minding. You can't be thinking ''I don't wanna do this''.

And no, it doesn't need a battery pull, hold power up+down+power to get in recovery once Odin is done.

The thing is, you do want it to reboot so you know all went well. Nothing to do with the battery. I never pull battery, although if the phone is boot-looping it may be your only choice. Getting to CWM will require either multi-button start or using ROM Manager from within phone (my preferred choice).

Thinking back to when I flashed a kernel injected with CWM before flashing CM 10.1, I didn't use Speedmod but CornKernel. I can't remember why, but I had decided that I didn't want to use Speedmod. Look in Captivate Android Development for CornKernel_UCKK4_v706.tar and flash it with Odin. If you want, you can also try rebooting into CWM recovery first and wiping cache and dalvik. If it doesn't boot after that, flash CornKernel.

-----

Right, the compatibility issue is what made me look for an alternative.

It will go in recovery mode if you have the GB bootloaders: vol up+down + power. But will not fully boot up (which is not needed).

As a second option, flash Corn kernel which will allow your phone to fully boot up but you only need the cwm recovery, which is why the guide suggest Speedmod kernel.
