What you've done is basically root by flashing kernel and its version of CWM. When you flash CM, it will overwrite that kernel with its kernel and its CWM. You're not going to run rooted stock with first kernel, so you really don't need to wipe anything. Wiping does nothing to data partition. If you are concerned about app compatibility, you can remove apps by resetting phone and removing user data in recovery. After entering on CMW i dont have to wipe nothing ?I dont care about my apps![]()
I edited my previous postNot really. What you've done is basically root by flashing kernel and its version of CWM. When you flash CM, it will overwrite that kernel with its kernel and its CWM. You're not going to run rooted stock with first kernel, so you really don't need to wipe anything. Just go into recovery and flash ROM and Gapps.
Flashing the first md5? Are you sure you're following the instructions in the OP?Can someone tell me why this is not working? I'm getting a big red FAIL when I try to flash the first md5. I just pulled the captivate out of the box so it's all stock. What am I doing wrong? I have two other android phones and a tablet and those all rooted pretty easily.I already have the ROM on the phone, just need to get into CWM.
Yes, it includes a customized version of CWM. If he then flashes, say, CM ROM, it will include its own version of CWM that will replace the one with speedmod.Alright so my friend is rooted with a one click root he did a long time ago. He is currently on gingerbread. I read the instructions and it says he needs to install speedmod kernel in Odin then it says to go to recovery. Does installing the speed mod kernel tar give him CWM also or do I have to instal that on my own

Yes. SIM card is completely separate from phone memory. extSD will not be touched by flashing. Resetting and wiping are restricted to partitions in phone memory. Is safe to flash with sim card inserted and sd card inserted cus i dont want to remove them

If i uncheck auto reeboot on odin before flashing speedmod the phone will not boot automatically right?Yes. SIM card is completely separate from phone memory. extSD will not be touched by flashing. Resetting and wiping are restricted to partitions in phone memory.
You're going into this with the wrong minding. You can't be thinking ''I don't wanna do this''.If i uncheck auto reeboot on odin before flashing speedmod the phone will not boot automatically right?

The thing is, you do want it to reboot so you know all went well. Nothing to do with the battery. I never pull battery, although if the phone is boot-looping it may be your only choice. Getting to CWM will require either multi-button start or using ROM Manager from within phone (my preferred choice). If i uncheck auto reeboot on odin before flashing speedmod the phone will not boot automatically right?

Thinking back to when I flashed a kernel injected with CWM before flashing CM 10.1, I didn't use Speedmod but CornKernel. I can't remember why, but I had decided that I didn't want to use Speedmod. Look in Captivate Android Development for CornKernel_UCKK4_v706.tar and flash it with Odin. If you want, you can also try rebooting into CWM recovery first and wiping cache and dalvik. If it doesn't boot after that, flash CornKernel. After flashing speedmod the phone will not boot at all...

It will go in recovery mode if you have the GB bootloaders: vol up+down + power. But will not fully boot up (which is not needed).Thinking back to when I flashed a kernel injected with CWM before flashing CM 10.1, I didn't use Speedmod but CornKernel. Right, the compatibility issue is what made me look for an alternative.
