Sorry to ask such a basic question, but I've installed "SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_designgears_v1_3_2360_0" for the Galaxy S2 SGH-i777 (AT&T GS2). This came from a link under the SGH-i777's KJ4 ROM for "New USB Drivers". Will this work with the Captivate and not brick anything?

Thanks.

It's not designed for the Captivate, do not use it.

I get the following message upon trying to install the Captivate drivers linked in the OP:

Samsung USB Driver for Mobile phones is already installed on your computer. Do you want to proceed with the installation anyway?

Do I proceed, or are they really all the same driver anyway?

To be crystal clear: I've already installed the drivers for the SGS2 earlier, for an AT&T SGS2. Do I install the Captivate drivers even though it's giving me that message?

Have you tried connecting the phone to the computer via USB?

yes.
i have NEVER had to install the drivers manually. i plug in to a new installation of windows 7 and it downloads from internet for me. installed in seconds.

try running windows update with phone plugged in.
or
open device manager and look for Android Device. if its there (while plugged in) its installed. if there is unknown device, right click it and select update drivers. then choose automatically from internet.

coming from CM7 or MIUI,

you MUST flash back to stock with an odin one click or regular odin WITH pit file and re-partition checked.

what kind of leak?? a tar odin file? or the deodexed cwm zip file? both are available in captivate>Development section.

to flash the cwm version follow this guide after flashing back to stock.
to flash the tar odin version put it in PDA box while in download mode and press start, same way you flash the kernel in this guide.

if you are running gingerbread running then you have gingerbread bootloaders. you don't need to worry about them ever again. just skip the boot loader step

instructions are in the first post. read them. the thread wasnt called [guide] for no reason.

all custom roms are good. what you will like depends on YOU.
different roms have different options. to find out the options, read the first post of the rom thread.
speed and battery life depend on what YOU DO on your phone, and what apps you install.

also read this XDA NEW USER GUIDE

TRusselo, Consider simplfing the process you outlined above...

Heimdall One-Click can be used for a much quicker one-shot method. There's a list of applicable packages here: http://teamkomin.com/index.php?dir=Captivate/

You could use the Gingerbread bootloaders package and the TalonDEV package to upgrade bootloaders and get the latest CWM on the device in the easiest maner possible, also this will work on ALL platforms and not just Windows.

Put device in download mode
Click the flash button and hold the Volume + and volume - buttons until the device restarts
Click the Flash bootloaders checkbox
Click the flash button
the device should restart into recovery mode, if not, place the device in recovery mode
Select your ROM

You'll just need a Heimdall one-click made. Would you like one? I can remix those two packages into one and make the one-cick I described above.
I did just that and now I am stuck in talon logo and won't go into recovery no matter what I do. how can I istall a rom on it.
I had rooted stock froyo 2.2 on it before. please help

Instructions for recovery mode:
have phone shut off
hold both volume buttons
press and hold power button
KEEP ALL 3 BUTTONS HELD for 3-5 seconds after screen comes on
after kernel bootscreen you will see clockwork recovery menu

if you already had the i9000 gingerbread bootloaders installed and skipped the steps in these instructions, the button combo would be different.
hold volume up then hold power

I've been wondering if its possible to install an i9000 ROM from the the i9000 android development section not the i9000 based ROMS. Would it work or is there some driver incompatibilities or something?

i9000 based roms and i9000 roms are the same thing. only with a different kernel.

if you flash an i9000 rom everything will work fine but the screen will be upside down, and the home capacitive button wont work until you flash an i9000 "re-oriented" kernel.

an i9000 based rom is just an i9000 rom pre-packaged with a re-oriented kernel for captivate.
