there is NO risk flashing kernels.

the only REAL RISK is flashing your bootloaders.
bootloaders need to be flashed ONCE and ONE TIME ONLY to let your phone run gingerbread roms as well as older roms.

other than that one time, flash anything else as much as you want.

Hello, and sorry for the noob questions, I'm new to android and everything.

I'm wanting to upgrade my captivate from at&t, froyo 2.2 to gingerbread 2.3.5. The thing is that I don't want any "custom rom" I want the vanilla gingerbread. So, if I follow the steps on this guide and NOT flash any kernel or put a ROM in the internal memory, will I be fine?

I would flash only the .tar file (I believe is called bootloader, correct me if I'm wrong) and reboot and that would be all. I'm ok?

Thanks for your patience!

Att has not release an official gingerbread.you can if you want flash the newest leak. kk4.

leaks normally come in tar odin files full of att bloatware and tethering restrictions.
there is a slightly de-bloated, tethering fixed, rooted cwm kernel version of kk4 by me in the captivate development section. here...【stock】【kk4】 rooted deodexed debloated
this is a CWM install so keep to these instructions.

Thanks for the reply. I was reading this guide

http://androidadvices.com/update-samsung-captivate-i897-gingerbread-235-firmware/2/

And the process seemed pretty simple, but when I came to XDA I saw a lot of stuff and got overwhelmed.

In that guide it only says to flash the .tar file and nothing else. What would happen if I just flash that file?
Also, you mentioned using the kk4 in the other post you made, and I have to use odin and the same process in this post, correct? Is it a custom rom or it will be the stock gingerbread, the one found in Atrix 2 or Galaxy SII?

Thanks again!

the KJ1 gingerbread from that page is an OLDER LEAK (ie more bugs)KK4 is the newest LEAK.

LEAK MEANS NOT OFFICIAL. still beta.

tar odin FULL rom are.. FULL FLASHES. if you just flash that whole BIG 270ish MB tar. it will update your phone.... or.. here is a full tar for kk4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357848
but as i said above it is full of bloatware and you cant tether without a tethering plan, not rooted ect...

so odin flash that.
or follow this guide to odin flash a cwm kernel, then cwm flash a tweaked stock rom.

but i shake my head.....
customs are so much better you are waisting your time. especially for a leak

I definitely suggest reading the XDA new user guide and helping yourself find your way around our big site, and find the stickies and other helpful items. (link in my signature)

then find your way to Captivate > Development and find a cool custom rom. read. research. enjoy freedom.

Well, thank you so much TRUsselo!

I'm a very "vanilla" guy, I like the stock roms, or however you call them, don't mind bloatware or anything, it's just I liked better the gingerbread I have in an Atrix 2 I have too. I thought that if I updated the Captvate to gingerbread I would have something like the Atrix 2 or SGSII.

I'll take a look at some custom roms, following your advice!

using Rogers GB bootloader instead of AT&T

Thanks for this great guide, it's what I've been looking for.

A couple questions though:

Can I use the Rogers GB bootloader found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817626&page=118 instead of the AT&T one you provide? I know there's really no difference between them, I'd rather have the Rogers logo instead of the ugly AT&T one.

If I use the Rogers GB bootloader, will I have to load a new kernel to keep using my phone as it is now? I am running Firefly 3.0 (Froyo) with CWM 2.5.1.2 and the 3e recovery no sig fix.

Thanks guys, you are what make android the best platform out there.

rogers bootloaders WILL NOT guarantee the rogers bootlogo. you can loose it if you flash a params.lfs from att and some kernels have the att bootlogo embedded in them.you can have ANY bootlogo you want by searching my signature....Captivate Bootscreen Replacement

you can use ANY kernel, ANY rom with gingerbread bootloaders. you can just flash them over your current rom kernel setup... firefly froyo...???... and you will be ready to upgrade to gingerbread when you feel like it.... as that is the ONLY reason to flash the gingerbread bootloaders... is to flash gingerbread roms.. there is NO other features.

Thanks TRusselo, I didn't know some kernels could do that. But it's good to know there's a fix. The only reason I wondered about a new kernel was if I wanted to go back to Firefly, in case a Gingerbread rom breaks something. I'd rather be able to go back than hope the next rom isn't broken too.

gingerbread has never been know to "break anything" its good.ALL gingerbread kernels except for the ONE rogers kernel WILL have the att screen.
the rogers kernel is 2.3.3 and all the newest Att leaks are 2.3.5
so you will either have an older rogers gingerbread with a nicer kernel screen... or newer gingerbread with att for half a second on boot,,,,

Great guide. Thank you very much for something recent and simple to follow. This is my first custom ROM experience and I have a feeling I could get hooked.

I installed Illuminance 3.0.1. If I decide to install another GB ROM, I only have to download it (without bootloader), go into recover mode, and flash the new ROM, correct?

If I want to go to a Froyo ROM (probably won't.. but just for education), I can leave the GB bootloaders but I will need to install a Froyo kernel and then a Froyo ROM without bootloader.

Did I get all that right?

Thanks again!
