@mark_v this is something i thought would happen with a nandroid of a stock rom... to get back to stock. use the DREAIMG.nbh to get rc-29 (did you format your sdcard to fat32 because that is important) then when you boot into bootloader (camera and power) it should give you the option to apply it, then after it is all done flashing press send menu and power to reboot, wait for it to boot up then wait for the ota updates to come to your phone.

Thanks for the feedback. Thats exacly what I did. I even did a reformat (not even the fast option) of an 8 Gb card using another G1 as a cardreader. I tried both the RC29 and the RC7 (my phone is Dutch) but neither worked :(

try redownloading the rc-7 or 8 file for your region you could have bad dl. if there is an md5sum for it check it. also try having it be the only thing on your sdcard

try getting it from here hopefully you can get a different result

I got them both from there and the file is the only thing in the card. I did read something about using a wm6 phone and QMAT to create a Gold card.
(in dutch: http://www.androidworld.nl/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=304&start=10). I still have my old WM6 phones so I'll try that as well.

New link (en): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=485364&highlight=qmat

@david1171 apparently a EU version will not accept a US or UK image.

It's all good

OK David, I've flashed the HardSPL, checked after and it's all good. Thanks for the advice. I've tried to find a thread on the benefits of the HardSPL (apart from what you've already mentioned), but haven't really seen anything useful. What are the benefits?

PS: Am I the only one who gets sweaty hands when doing stuff to their phone? It's almost as bad as when I started playing around with my old 286 almost 17 years ago  :D - love it though.

I typed up something like this in that silly guide in the dev secion. For funzies I'll post it here too:

THIS METHOD SHOULD ONLY BE USED WITH THE G1/DREAM AND NOT THE SAPPHIRE/MyTouch

  1. Backup all needed files from you SD card
  2. Download and install Recovery Flasher
  3. Open up recovery flasher and click flash recovery
  4. Download the newest radio and place on root of SD card
  5. Download Hard SPL and place on root of SD card
  6. Download ROM of choice (Recommend Cyan 4.0.1) and place on root of SD card
  7. Turn off phone
  8. Boot in recovery holding HOME+POWER button
  9. Select "apply any zip from sd" using either your trackball or pressing Alt+A
  10. Select the radio file and install
  11. After installation press HOME+BACK to reboot into recovery
  12. Select "apply any zip from sd" using either your trackball or pressing Alt+A
  13. Select the Hard SPL .zip file and install
  14. After installation press HOME+BACK to reboot into recovery
  15. Once in recovery wipe by hitting either Alt+W or scrolling with trackball
  16. Select "apply any zip from sd" using either your trackball or pressing Alt+A
  17. Select your ROM and install
  18. After installation press HOME+BACK

There you go you are rooted with the newest rom! If you wanna go advanced and flash Haykuro's SPL then just follow this.

  1. With your phone off, turn on holding CAMERA+POWER
  2. Somewhere in the top-right you should see either PVT or DVT written somewhere. If you have a DVT board, stop reading because you can't flash this new SPL. If you have a PVT board then just follow along
  3. Download the newest radio and place it on the root of your SD card
  4. Download Haykuro's SPL and place it on the root of your SD card
  5. Download the rom you are currently running right now and place it on the root of your SD card
  6. Reboot in recovery
  7. Select "apply any zip from sd"
  8. Select and install your RADIO file and hit HOME+BACK when finished
  9. Once you're in recovery again select "apply any zip from sd" again and choose the SPL file and install. After installation press HOME+BACK
  10. Once you get into recovery again select "apply any zip from sd" once again and choose your ROM file. After installation press HOME+BACK
  11. You're done!

EDIT:
Another thing for the new people beginning to root. If you guys decide to take the time to root then take the time to learn the information needed before flashing anything and not expect to be catered just because you are new. All the info for all you're little question are out there. Just put in the effort to search. If you don't want to put in the effort to search for the info then don't bother rooting.
Sorry if this is a noob question but will there be an SPL and Radio update for the Sapphire? I have gotten the the modded rom on the device but not sure what to do from there. Not sure if you would be able to help just thought I would ask. Thanks for the help and information with G1 too. My G1 works great.

for the mytouch (if thats what your talking about) you will need to flash haykuro's spl and the mytouch should already have the latest radio since it started with 1.5

Does this method work for the Rogers Dream ( Version from Canada)? Or would it be better for me to use the long method of rooting and then load a rom that way?

Is there a thread or site I can look through for roms for the Canadian version of the dream or is the standard version of Cyanogen's mod working on all Dream types?

thank you

OK,
So, everything went well till the spl,
Now I'm bricked.
No power, no nothing...
any suggestions?

Also, no hard feelings... I knew the risks.
But some advice, other than "you're S.O.L." would be nice.
thanks

2 questions, well the first is more or a less a given, i am basically assuming you did this with a G1, so you can't boot into recovery or bootloader? no home and power or camera and power. does it cut on at all? if it doesn't cut on at all, this may sound stupid but put on the charger for a few hours and see if that makes any kind of difference.

if in fact you are bricked, then you can call your phone provider and say that you got an ota update and now your phone will not get past that the first screen.

Well the fact of the matter is that I killed it.
I've tried everything that you suggested above and also let it charge overnight.
It won't even give me some sort of light or buzz.
It has met it's maker I believe.

Will go back to the phone shop and trade for a new one today;)

Yep, I was stupid.
I believe it was the final step that got me.... I am on a G2.
I didn't use the correct update, just should have skipped it.

But, up to that point, it looked beautiful with Haykuru or Cyanogen.

If you want to do this with G2 for fun, Stop before spl. Or get the correct one.

@esskaypee.. have you rooted your g1 using the one click root method. i have problems finding out whether or not my phone is staying rooted so that i can move on and install the new spl, partition, and ultimately custom rom and theme. I have g1 1.5 firm, crc1 build. i cannot get back to the recovery screen after reboot. do you know for sure if over the last ota updates do our phones have the latest radio files, therefore i can skip this file and move onto the spl load??? i don't know if any of this is clear, but any advise or direction would be greatly appreaciated.

Oops

I think I pretty much did the same thing.

Few days ago I got root with the RecoveryFlasher.apk, was successful and tried a few different roms before settling on the JACMyTouchSkiv2.5.2 rom. After rebooting that and playing around with it, I loved the rom initially with the given widgets and look but not everything was functional (I couldn't toggle the BT or WiFi, auto tilt wasn't working, and more). So thinking I did something wrong or "forgot" a step in the rooting process, I came across this thread in my searches on doing the one-step root method.

So, in my desperation to get the rom fully functional on my MyTouch, I failed to heed the warning in big red letters (not thinking it would brick my phone) and followed the instructions anyways. Most of it I had already done with the RecoveryFlasher.apk but I never flashed it with an spl. Not doing more research ahead of time, I flashed my G2 with the SPL step and when I rebooted, brick.

Phone won't turn on at this point and I'm looking for options. If I pull the battery and then plug it in, the orange charging light comes on. If I try to reboot (Home+Power), the light flashes a dim red and then nothing. Light turns off for awhile completely. I even tried Call+Menu+Power and VolDown+Power. No life, no worky worky. Orange charging light won't come on either while plugged in at this point. I have to unplug the phone, pull the battery, let caps drain, put the battery back in, and then plug it back in for the orange light to come back on. So it SEEMS like it's trying to do something after I push the power on (like it's in an infinite loop) but alas, nothing happens.

I'm all ears for any options at this point. Even for a plausible story to tell my local T-Mobile store to allow for an exchange. I have insurance on the phone as well so I'm sure I could get an exchange that way as well, probably for a small fee but free is preferable =P

Anyways, I'm a big dummy for not reading ahead and not heeding the warnings in the initial post. I would suggest to David to alter the warning or add to it to be more straight forward and blunt with something like "INSTRUCTIONS FOR G1/DREAM ONLY!! ALL OTHER MODELS WILL BE BRICKED" to hopefully get people's attention a little more. Maybe also add something to the SPL step of the instructions noting that users with MT3G/Sapphire HTC phones have reported bricking their phone with this step.

Thanks for any help ahead of time =)

A few questions, i just bought a g1 on ebay and it says its new

My friend tried to root his g1, but he didn't do it right. I said i could try. He happened to downgrade his phone to RC29. I tried the 1 click root but when i booted into recovery mode it wasn't cyanogens recovery it was the normal android. So i just gave it b ack to him because i didn't want to mess it up.

1) will this work on any version of android 1.1, 1.5?
2) do i need to download and put cyanogen's recovery image 1.4 on the root of the sdcard before i run the "flash recovery" application
3) For a first time rooted phone is it ok to flash it using the application and then installing cyanogen's rom? because i read that its good to have a base of JF Rom's before flashing to cyanogen (or is that for the older way of root ie downgrade to RC29)

@x9f
1. I do not know about 1.1 but it should work on all 1.5 (with the exception of rogers i think)
2. It should flash the recovery image to your phone
3. I have took phones from rc-29 to cyanogen's with no evident side effects

Dennis, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you now are the proud owner of a shiney paperweight, gotta take it back to t-mobile, us on the dreams could use the update to cupcake as our good excuse. I know a guy who said he want to bed and woke up with his phone unrespondsive so just play dumd and don't mention anything of rooting your phone

If i decide to change a theme, do i need to wipe or just apply the update.zip and it will work fine?
