  • Welcome to the Xperia 5 TWRP Guide

    What You will need:
-Windows 10 (If You want to do the optional Steps), or Linux, or Chrome OS
-Fastboot (and the correct Drivers if You use Windows)
    -XperiFirm from XDA (Google) (Optional)
    -NewFlasher from XDA (Google) (Optional)
    -UnSin from XDA (Google) (Optional)
-Magisk Zip or App from GitHub (Only Official Source)(Google)

    Let's start:

    1. Do these optional Steps if You want to use the latest available Firmware for Your Device
    2. (Optional) Download the latest Firmware for Your Device with XperiFirm
    3. (Optional) Drag and Drop the NewFlasher Files from the NewFlasher Zip into Your Firmware Folder and start NewFlasher
    4. (Optional) Press N and Enter for the first two Steps, press Y and Enter for all following. That ensures You will have the complete Device updated
    5. (Optional) Drag and Drop the Boot Sin File from the Firmware Folder on the UnSin Exe
    6. (Optional) Copy the extracted Boot Image File to Your working Device
    7. (Optional) Install the Magisk App, open it and install Magisk. Choose the File patching Method and select the copied Boot Image
    8. (Optional) Copy the Magisk patched Boot Image back to Your PC and rename it to " kernel.img "
    9. (Optional) Copy the kernel.img File into the 1-Boot_Image-Xperia5.zip from HERE
    10. Download the 1-Boot_Image-Xperia5.zip File from HERE . Which will contain the Kernel You want to use...
    11. Download the 2-Xperia-TWRP-3.3.x.zip File from HERE . Which actually contains the TWRP Recovery for Your Kernel...
    12. Download the xperia_twrp.img File from HERE . Which will be used to flash the Zip Files...
    13. Download the magisk_patched.img File from the right Device Folder HERE . Which needs to be copied into the 1-Boot_Image-Xperia5.zip File You downloaded before...
    14. (Optional) Download the latest Magisk Zip from Github if You haven't done the Optional Steps...
    15. Flash now with fastboot using: fastboot flash boot xperia_twrp.img . The TWRP Kernel for flashing the Zips...
    16. Disconnect Your Device from USB and hold Volume - (Down) and the Power Button together until You see the Bootloader Message. Release the Powerbutton while holding down the Volume - Button...
    17. You should now see TWRP in Chinese. Swipe to allow Modifications and go to the Wipe/Format Section (Top right Option in the Main Menu)
    18. Select the Format Data Option (Right bottom over the Slider) and type in using the Keyboard " yes ". Watchout! This will clean Your Devices Internal Storage too!
    19. Go back using the Home Button and select the Option on the bottom Right (Reboot Menu). Select Recovery and wait for the Reboot into the Recovery...
    20. Swipe again to allow Modifications and select the Option over the Reboot Menu. Switch to the last Tab on the Right and select English if You want to (Apply with the bottom right Option)...
    21. Go back to the Main Menu and select Install. Bring now using MTP or OTG the 2 Zip Files from before onto Your Device and install them. First the Boot Image Zip, second the Xperia TWRP Zip...
    22. (Optional) If You haven't done the Optional Steps, flash Magisk now before Rebooting...
    23. (Optional) If You have done the optional Steps, just install Magisk as App. Your Kernel is already rooted...
    24. Reboot back to Your Recovery and enjoy! (You may need to repeat the formatting in the Wipe Menu again to use Your Internal Storage in TWRP. Storage works fine in the Android System)

Guide will be improved over Time! Thanks to @Pandemic for the Original Thread over HERE and for providing the needed Files on XDA.

Same Steps, different Files like You can imagine. I made two Folders on Google Drive to keep them seperated.

I was wondering if we can use the TWRP Installer Zips from like for example the Pixel 2 XL which is almost the same as what we flash actually. Our TWRP is actually from a One Plus 2 or so, while using an old Lazy Flasher with old Magisk Boot File. While the newer TWRP Installers are using a Magisk kind of Installer to do the Ramdisk changes. Only thing i wonder is if the included ramdisk cpio is Device specific or a general thing which shares between different devices!? I'm really about to just try a flash on risk but i would like to here if You know that...

  • @MartinX3 can hopefully look at this :(

The ramdisk also contains device specific files :)

I put the twrp 1/5 on my to-do list :)

We found together :) @Pandemic just asked @MartinX3 some Hours ago if he can invite us to the Xperia TWRP Family on his XZ2 Thread, and You mentition him over to this Thread. Funny

It's really no fun actually to recover my Xperia after Bootloops with Fastboot instead of TWRP. Really throw my Hat in the air once we get a working Recovery. If i can help in any way, let Me know Martin!

Wish You a good Start in the coming Week Guys! :fingers-crossed:

TWRP freezes when i try step 18, until i hard reboot. I also can't mount the storage to put the zips on my phone. Don't know what else to do. Also my touchscreen has stopped working in android, but still works on twrp.

Please try : "fastboot flash boot_a ..." instead of just "fastboot flash boot ..." and repeat with "fastboot flash boot_b ...". This will flash the Recovery to both booth Slots. after that do "fastboot -w" which will format Your Device. Reboot into the Recovery and repeat Step 18 if possible. Would be nice to hear from You again!

Edit: You need to pass Step 18 to use Your Storage. After flashing the Zips will Your System start to work normally again. (Touch and everything else)

Thank you for the advice! I actually got my phone working with (just) magisk with your other tutorial, that also had the a and b slots. I'll edit it to see if this works too!
Also thank you for supporting a lesser known phone!

    edit-
I've tried your new steps, but the phone still freezes when formatting it. Am I doing something stupid?

Just a clue, did You Set TWRP to English before doing the Format? That caused Problems for Me...

      Does this require unlocked bootloader?
      Yes
