Good idea. I need to investigate how to do some of that, but when I do I will update the guide.

Thank you for this. This is the easiest to follow guide I've sen so far.
I think I actually will install a custom ROM now. I just rooted it without any problems using this guide.

Merry Christmas, guys. Thanks for putting this guide together - it's very informative.

I have a few questions that I'm still unclear about.

First off, flashing to stock. Using Odin to flash back to JH6 works fine. But is it a good idea to flash to JH7 before flashing the custom ROM? Or is it an unnecessary step? (Also, what happens with newer Captivates that ship with JH7 and can't be flashed to JH6 with Odin?)

Second question - In the guide, why is backing up Applications and data optional? Are there times where you can just flash a ROM and have it not affect any of your personal information?

Third question - In the last part of the guide, it provides an example to restore data using Titanium Backup, and says to restore 'missing apps+all system data.' Wouldn't this process overwrite some system files that the custom ROM installed?

Thanks for helping me understand the process!

First Question: I am not sure I will have to investigate that.

Second Question: Because not everyone needs to save their data. When I flash a ROM I like to start with a clean slate.

Third question: I am pretty sure system data just means things such as live wallpapers, settings, etc. If it does mess up your ROM tell me and I will change the guide accordingly.

Hello there..
I noticed the I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.rar is the same as the ODIN 1click, is there any problem with the 1008 phones? may be just mention that this may disable the three button combo? If your build is 1008 then you should use STOCK JF6 with 3 button fix and a link or something...
regards!

Yes, I am not entirely sure of the entire problem with the 1008 phones though. Can you please explain? And yes, this is ODIN 1click.

"This guide only works on Windows. If you have a Mac or Linux, download the files and put them on a flash drive and use someone else's computer."

Question:
Why, if this is an open source OS, with a Linux kernel, can we not do this on our Linux machines? Is it just because the programs mentioned are windows based? My desktop and laptop are both Ubuntu. Just kinda frustrating :)

It is just because of one thing: ODIN. ODIN for some reason is only windows. I myself are on a Mac, so when I want to install a custom ROM I have to at least do the ODIN step on a PC. I have tried running ODIN through wine, etc. and nothing works.

My Captivate has the baseband version I897UCJH7 (the AT&T update installed). Can it be considered as a "stock firmware" and ready for custom ROM installation?

No do not flash to JH7....Not needed

Not usually unless the Dev says it can be...Not to many ROMs can be flashed over another or the same ROM..Also backing up SYSTEM data to later be reinstalled to a new ROM is not a good idea as it will likely mess up a reinstall to a different ROM. Knowing the difference between "system" data and APK data is a good idea

Third question - In the last part of the guide, it provides an example to restore data using Titanium Backup, and says to restore 'missing apps+all system data.' Wouldn't this process overwrite some system files that the custom ROM installed?

This is a recipe for disaster. I NEVER back up "system" data ooutside of a Nandroid back up. only application data,

Thanks for helping me understand the process!

Ok thanks kept the system data backup, but changed the restore part to not restore it.

Thank you for this guide. I've actually copied it into a Word document and adjusted the font - no way these old eyes can follow that!! I'll update it on my computer if you make changes, and won't share it with anyone without permission.

I already have a printable edition but if the ink its font is too small be my guest. I created the printable one so small just so I can keep a copy on my desk without having to flip pages.
