One thing has always bothered me. If my Captivate is rooted, but nothing else has been done to it (other than enabling sideloading, done via the db.settings edit method), do you have to flash to JH6? If so, could you explain why, so I understand the process a bit more?

i flashed mine the first time to cognitionfrom the jh7 update/stock, rooted with the oclf, worked fine. my first newbie mistake was not to flash back to stock using odin when i decied to try another rom. i flashed to axura without going to stock ( it somewhat worked bu was missing things) i tried to flash right back and got stuck in recovery mode. haha, im sure i'm not the only person who at this point learned how to flash to stock using odin, once you have that down it's smooth sailing

I just want to say THANK YOU for this tutorial and for the step-by-step videos. For people who like to play around with this sort of thing, but cant be logged on and checking for new ways on how to update this and the newest best way to flash... this makes things much easier... and Im sure it also helps knock down the 'HOW DO I FLASH' question ratio.

Again, thank you to all who take the time to help the rest of the community in order to achieve a better experiance for our gadgets!

Unclear on something...

Why can't we just use clockwork recovery to wipe before flashing instead of going back to stock every time? That's how it works with HTC phones...
I am not sure exactly why that is, but all I know is that if you do your phone will get screwed up any you will have to use ODIN to fix it. Basically ODIN is your friend.

So it seems like we use ODIN to wipe before switching ROMs. I guess I don't understand why it has to be done that way as opposed to using CWM Recovery instead.

Thanks for the guide, very helpful!

Good guide. I'd like to mention that instead of steps 2-4, what someone can do is just put update.zip (that is clockwork recovery) in your sdcard, just boot into 2e recovery, and reinstall packages so that clockwork recovery gets installed. From CWM you can just flash a rom. No rooting needed as long as the rom you flash has root permissions (which is most roms). I found this to be less of a hassle.
I had Darky's 7.6 then used ODIN to flash back to eclair. Now when I try to use CWD to install a ROM it doesn't take me into CWD Recovery. I get the 'standard' recovery screen and it says it is 3e recovery. How do I get 2e recovery back?

Thanks,
g_whiz

EDIT: Nevermind, all. I began completely fresh and when I installed CWM per the instructions herein then I ended up with 2e.

You can just flash from CWM but any lag fix has to be disabled before you flash clockwork for the update.zip file and before you use CWM to flash the new ROM or you're just going to get stuck in the CWM recovery boot completely unable to do anything other than restore a good nandroid backup or use Odin to fix it.

Disable voodoo; or whatever lagfix you have; then boot into recovery, apply your update.zip through stock recovery the "reinstall packages" option, which will reboot you into CWM recovery, usually takes 2 trys, and select apply zip from sdcard, browse to the folder that you put the rom in and hit the "yes" option with your power button.

Just did this to get Perception 9.5 flashed as my Win7 64b decided to not recognize my phone in download mode anymore (tried everything but no go anymore). Worked flawlessly, have used this method several times with no pain.

nOObie Question

Flashing guide states once your Cap is connected to your pc via USB, go to download folder...okay, how do I navigate to download folder (USB in Debug). Please describe steps to get there...installing ClockWork Restore from pc. My Cap has Froyo 2.2 installed from Odin3 and rooted using SuperOne-Click. Yeah, I know very nOObie question but haven't done flashing before. Thank you in advance...

By download folder I meant the folder on your computer that you downloaded files to (such as odin, drivers, etc)
