It could be as simple as the cable, or the usb port. Use the original cable that came with the phone. Use a usb port that is directly connected to the mother board.

Look at this thread. I gave the same advice in post #4. And then look at post #28.

Do you have SGH-I777, or is it some other model?

I can see from the above that Odin sees the phone but the firmware does not complete. Flashing the stock UCKH7 one-click downloader onto a working SGH-I777 will not fail, so we need to know all the particulars about your device, what exactly has been done to it, how it was behaving, the reason you need to flash back to stock, if there are any known hardware problems, etc. Tell everything you know about the phone.

I attempted to install an insecure kernel to the phone, and got the same message from odin. The kernel was supposedly the one for my phones make and model (SGH-I777), and it gave me the same error message. Every other kernel has done the same.

the phones current behavior is that it just hangs at "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again"

Exactly what kernel, and downloaded from where. A link to the source would be helpful, if possible.

What a lifesaver!

I don't know what's the problem, but this wasn't my first update from AT&T to be riddled with issues.

I had the Moto Atrix2 for a couple of months and during that time AT&T pushed out an update that made the device useless (for my needs). The deal breaker for me was that Wifi and data connectivity was unstable and apps would disappear. Following instructions from here I was able to revert the unit to stock, but there were still issues. Other forums also reported that the OG Atrix had many of the same symptoms from the same update. That unit went right back to Costco and I got the SGS2 instead.

I was extremely pleased with having SGS2, up until the ICS update (well, at least a little less than when it was stock). I'd get random reboots (while it was in my pocket, I'd know because I'd hear the AT&T startup tones while driving or walking), Wifi would sometimes disconnect from my home AP overnight, touch sensitivity from the lock screen didn't always recognize that I never lifted my finger off the screen if I didn't swipe fast enough (I learned to deal with that), sliding wallpaper was gone (oh well), Google Voice widget was lopped in half (eh), predictive text from any input method was flaky (sometimes I'd get a black row where the suggestions were suppose to show - dealt with it by forcing a selection change in input method when this symptom cropped up), and battery drain went up (dammit). It wasn't all bad, ICS has many other improvements , but its always the little things that can get on your nerves.

Anyway, thanks to you guys, my SGS2 is back to stock and I'm once again, a happy camper! The one click solution, doesn't get any easier!

IM getting this, an idiot flashed a 9100 rom onto this and what I did was take the xxlpb firmware he flashed onto it, flash a kernel with cwm and then flash a i777 rom worked but the rom just randomly reboots.

Dunno what to do considering this package always fails after cache.img.

Try the full firmware version which you can get from the download repository. See link in my signature. The I9100 firmware may have contained bootloaders and needs to be put back.

Flashed the bootloader and stock param lfs and the phone entered the shostock right away.

The issue that it randomly turned off and wouldn't boot into the rom again seems to be fixed.

Hi there! I rooted my brother's phone without knowing it takes so much work to unroot it compared to rooting it. He wants to return it because he told me the phone gets very hot randomly on his pocket without really running anything. Thank you for writing this guide! I'm a noob with all these stuff :(

Anyways, about the phone:
Model Number: Samsung-SGH-I777
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: I1777UCKK6
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.UCKK6

I did the checking thing and turns out my CUSTOMARY BINARY DOWNLOAD says YES 1 COUNT. Now, I don't know which JIG is needed for me? I checked amazon and got these:
Code:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=micro+usb+jig
Are any of these the right one?
I was looking at this in particular
Code:
http://www.amazon.com/Aftermarket-Download-GT-i9100-Fascinate-Replacement/dp/B005UUCT0Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1344273648&sr=8-2&keywords=micro+usb+jig
How would I use this Micro USB Jig? Just plug it I'm guessing?

ALSO, on your NOTE, you said that if you have UCKK6, you need to flash UCKH7, this phone needs to have USB debugging checked right?

I just want to get everything right on my first try, and have read the entire post twice.

Again, THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS GUIDE :)

Those jigs will probably all work ok. The resistance must be 201,000 ohms plus or minus 1%. If out of tolerance it won't work. But I havn't heard anything about out of tolerance jigs in many months.

Yes, just plug it into the micro usb port, it will boot into download mode, and the flash count will be reset.

Whether USB debugging is checked or not is irrelevant. You will be flashing with Odin from download mode. Just flash the stock UCKH7. There is no straight stock package for UCKK6 since it was an over the air update instead of a kies update. But it should be fine for returning the phone.

There is no 2.3.6 stock, unless you can get the over the air update to work. The choices are either 2.3.4 or ICS. You can find UCLE5 stock ICS in the Download Repository if you don't want to fool with kies.
For some reason I thought stock was 2.3.6. Been a while since I have been there :p

I'll probably go GB since I have that Odin downloaded already.

If your flash counter says that your phone is an I9100, you have an I9100 secondary bootloader, probably from flashing an I9100 rom onto your phone, and you will need to flash back to the I777 Stock sbl.bin to correct the flash counter. You will also probably need to flash the stock param.lfs back onto your phone.
This is exactly what I did. accidentally flashed a i9100 firmware to my i777. How do I flash the stock sbl.bin?
