Sorry I'm here again but I have read many articles in which it is said that miflash only supports snapdragon devices and if i select chip as mtlb in mi flash then it just converts into spflash tool.

Thanks if you can guide me whether I should go with snapdragon method or use spflash?

Sp flash tool works with mediatek devices only.

So I am not sure if I it is possible to use sp flash tool to perform readback without unlocking the bootloader. My device is running vanilla 12.5.5.0(RJOINXM) and has not ever been modified.
I decided it would be a great idea to backup (readback) partitions (particularly userdata) before trying mi unlock as it apparently erases the device.

I first followed this guide (bypassing auth in edl) and tried readback, but it shows "STATUS_PRELOADER_INVALID" (do note that I was using MT6768_Android_scatter--V12.0.1.0.RJOMIXM.txt, as I couldn't find a scatter file for newer version if that matters (the start addresses and lengths were matching with the ones in this guide) ).

Leaving it at that, I then tried point 12 of faq-guide-help-assistance-solution-centre-for-merlin, but when flashing preloader in fastboot, it says the obvious FAILED (remote: 'Download is not allowed on locked devices').

Is it just not possible to use sp flash tool to for anything without unlocking the bootloader? It would be great if @VD171 could assist me.

I'm not sure if you can perform readback with locked bootloader.
I just know you can flash with locked bootloader, except for locked partitions.
