can we use fsck to check for bad blocks? I am researching using dd to copy/backup system partitions to PC I believe it will fail on bad blocks. Have not used unix commands for decades :)

The e2fsck is included in the tools though. You might give it a try. The command is below (run under adb shell, the command is for partition 10, change number for other partitions). it should work on normal blocks but probably would freeze on bad ones.

Drnull says it freeze on bad blocks when he runs it:

"
Running: e2fsck -cv /dev/block/mmcblk0p10

locks up though"

Forest what happens after the freeze. . Will we lose the bootloader

Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA Premium HD app
No. That is the datafs partition so no problem at all. Just need to close the it.

bootloader reside in partition 1 and 2. We should never mess with those partitions or the phone will not boot.

It is safe to play with 4 partitions: cache. factoryfs, datafs, and UMS. You can remove, recreate, resize and if they do not meet your need just do it again. The phone can still boot safely into recovery even without these partition.

Other partitions should be leave untouched.

cheers.

Forest can you skip some posts and see Post #331 and 333.

I have posted some scripts used for file system repair.
But needs to be heavily modified.

People faced problems earlier and they resolved.

Whats harm in giving a try .

Copper is ready to run fsck
Why dont u guide him.

I am trying to bring a new tool compiled for ARM arch for finding bad blocks.
Please explain what you mean by this, I assume you are writing a script or an app?

My note is working so I do not want to run any command that could be detrimental but I would like to run a "check disk" fsck to see if I have any damage.

as mentioned before I did have a "soft brick" that took several wipes and flashes to cure.

Tool - I will let u know once I am thru ; I have contacted other forums for help....

a) the script clears the filesystem errors for HTC Sense users.
They had similar problems and solved by this script.

Yes please try fsck only and let us know what u get.

If your Note was soft bricked : Did u get stuck at factoryfs.img - Then its a superbrick acording to this community and its not solvable. If you have solved it then u are a resource for many bricked users getting stuck at factoryfs.img ....

I am doubting that I suffered this I was in a panic and don't remember all I did.

Does this only happen using odin? I was trying to flash various roms with CWM and they kept hanging. (I used red pill in abyss 3.9 and was able to fix it).

This was just before we knew leaked roms were causing super bricks. (and I was under the impression that a super brick was a blank screen hard brick :)

There must be some good tools somewhere that can check and report if there are any faulty block somewhere in the 4 partitions so that we can try to avoid.

We need help on this issue.

cheers

My note back to life

Yeah I am stuck at the first screen too..

When I unzipped AbyssNote kernel 4.2 Final CW Touch Custom Logo, it was zlmage, not .tar file extension. Tried putting .tar at the end, still no luck.

I also tried CF-ROOT 5.3V, it was successfully flashed but again I was stuck at the first screen with yellow triangle at the bottom.

Am I trying out wrong kernels?

EDIT: I managed to find .tar file of Abyss kernel and flashing was successful, still cannot get into recovery ... seems pretty hopeless now

hello
I am very happy to see my Glalaxy Note restart after a week without end.
Thanks to you I can use my phone
I'm in CM9
Now, is that I can install an official ROM?

Can't wait till forest makes the new guide to re-partition all four areas :) we all might not be as lucky as uggies when it comes to the first guide. But than again YMMV, but my theory is the more times you attempted to flash stock rom and it hung on factoryfs.img the deeper your damage will be in those areas, because those were the sole moments that the new stock rom was trying to access those 4 partitions (for read/write purposes) and hung equaling more damage on more blocks.....

It feel great to have another Note recovered :):D.

Yes, there should not be any problem with roms (except that dangerous SS ICS one) as long as you know where to find it and how to install it in the right way. I would suggest download the official roms from the well-known Dr.Ketan's thread.

Cheers,

As far as I am aware official ICS roms still could cause a super brick please correct me if I am wrong (Again :)

Something like this?

Yes we need kind of disktool that can run under cwm or adb shell and can tell us if and where there is faulty block so that we can avoid.

thanks

One more thing, what if you create only the datafs and factoryfs, but not the UMS partition. WIll the phone work only with the external SD in that case?? I forgot to try that yesterday when i still had the phone. That way we could use a larger amount for datafs and factoryfs on the "good memory part"

Not that way Matiasg.

The factoryfs only need enough space to hold the rom (600-800MB is quite enough)

The datafs infact only need about 1GB. I have also an ARC-S and a Kindle Fire that have only 512MB datafs partition and they run very fine. Note has 2GB which is quite generous. If you give these two partition more space it will be wasteful. The large UMS is needed for internal sdcard so that you can store music, video picture...

cheers
