Wifi can use???

this guide will show you how to root your xperia z on 10.5.1.a.0.283 or 10.5.1.a.0.292 with a locked bootloader.

xperia z (phone) only. this means not tablet z, zl, zr, z1, z2 or any other z series device. You could damage your device if you flash these files to anything but an xperia z.

requirements:

device already running 10.5.1.a.0.283 or 10.5.1.a.0.292
usb debugging enabled.
flashtool and adb drivers by doomlord installed.
flashtool by androxyde already installed.
easy root by zxz0o0.

downloads:

the kernels supplied here are for the xperia z only. Do not flash them to a zl/zr or any other device or you will soft brick your device.

xperiaz_10.5.a.0.230_kernel_only.ftf - 7.38 mb
mirror 1 - mega
mirror 2 - mediafire

xperiaz_10.5.1.a.0.283_kernel_only.ftf - 7.51 mb
mirror 1 - mega
mirror 2 - mediafire

xperiaz_10.5.1.a.0.292_kernel_only.ftf - 7.51 mb
mirror 1 - mega
mirror 2 - mediafire

instructions:

follow all of the steps. There are no unnecessary parts to the guide.

1. Shut down your device.
2. Flash the xperiaz_10.5.a.0.230_kernel_only.ftf using flashtool. Basic flashtool instructions here.
3. Boot your device. Wifi will not work. Do not worry, this will be restored later. Also, as this seems to be generating repeated questions, the firmware version in "about phone" will not change.
4. Root using one of these options:
A. Easy root. This worked for me.
B. The root function of the latest flashtool.
C. Enable mobile data and use towelroot.
5. Shutdown your device.
6. Depending on your firmware version, either flash:
Xperiaz_10.5.1.a.0.283_kernel_only.ftf
or
xperiaz_10.5.1.a.0.292_kernel_only.ftf
using flashtool.
7. Boot your device.
8. You may need to install supersu from the play store - link
9. Open supersu and update binaries if prompted.

That's it. You should now be rooted.

additional information:

"the kernels are for c6602, but i have a c6603!". Don't worry about it. Both devices use identical kernels, therefore it doesn't make any difference.

Is your antivirus saying towelroot/easy root/flashtool is a virus? See this post for an explanation.

As some are asking about this, xzdualrecovery works fine with this firmware version.

For those having trouble installing the flashtool drivers and/or using flashtool, see my guide here.

disclaimer:

the steps and files used in this guide worked for me with no issues. However, use of this guide and any downloads provided are at your own risk.
I will accept no responsibility for anything that may go wrong or any damage to your device/data loss.

credits:

androxyde for flashtool
zxz0o0 for easy root
geohot for the original towelroot exploit
chainfire for supersu
doomlord for the flashtool driver package.
If i have forgotten anyone, let me know and i'll add proper credits.

Did you follow the guide fully? You need to flash back your original kernel after rooting. That will make your wifi function again. This definitely works 100%.

Also, please don't quote the entire first post. It makes the thread hard to read through for everyone else. Thanks. :)

Hi,
i followed instructions and got stuck (log attached to post). As I'm noob I dont know what to do now. I tried to repeat the process, but it got stuck on the same spot as first time.
Saw some advices to change port or pc, but I'm scared to make it worse.

Any advice? Starting to panick a little :D

There's no obvious error shown in the Flashtool output. I would try a different USB cable/port or PC as you said. I only use the original cable that was supplied with the phone to flash with.

It all worked out!
I just changed USB port. Thanks man!

Just to describe my problem and solution for other users if they get stuck too.
Prior to installation and during flashing I disabled antivirus.
(got flashtool from flashtool.net because extracted version didnt work on my machine)

I run Flashtool as admin and started flashing. After a minute or two flashing process got stuck (see attached pic1). My legs cut off :D
First I waited for two hours to give it time to complete process, but nothing hapened. Turned off Flashtool and tried again, but got stuck at the same spot. I saw post from user Jun33r on page 16 of this thread to try different usb port or PC, but I didnt want to mess up more my phone so I asked for advice and kingvortex (thanks again man!) confirmed to try with different port/PC
First time my phone was connected to USB port on the front of my machine (those ports are connected to motherboard via some cable).
This time I connected cable to a port on the back of my machine that is directly on the motherboard, and run Flastool again. It worked perfectly! Flashing process took few secs to complete (see attached pic2), and phone worked again :victory:
Easy root got stuck on first run, but on second try it got trough and rooted the phone.
Flashed 292 (in my case) back and that was it. The whole process took less than 5mins to root (on good port).

Thanks to all users for ther posts!

Do what it says and move it instead of copying it. Nothing should be left in the original directories afterwards.

In the Firmware Selector window, press the button with 3 dots in the top right and browse to the location where you saved the FTFs you downloaded.

Easy way with .apk - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60702819 I tested this and it works. On stock 4.4.4, locked bootloader. This is also for 5.0.2. Phone will restart few times after rooting.

I'm aware of this, but I don't personally trust Kingroot. It sends your device IMEI to a server in China and installs their own Superuser app (KingUser) and several other Chinese apps.

This method is clean and installs a trusted Superuser solution (SuperSU). If you want to use Kingroot, that's fine but I don't recommend it personally.
