[GUIDE] How to root 2015 Philips Android TV

Hi,

I am trying to root philips 42pfk7109/12. Did anyone have experience with this one? The software is extremely slow and I think removing the bloatware will do the trick. I can't install any other apps on the TV than the ones from the store(limited).
I am stuck at Execute another shell command: adb connect 10.0.1.2 (IP of your TV), I cannot connect to the TV that way. Did I miss something? i cannot enable developer mode on the TV either.

Has anyone fiind a way to install android 6 or later to philips TV's that stopped being supported by philips..??
I'm frustrated of not able to have 5.1 from apps especially Netflix on my 48pus7600/12

Rooting was possible prior to QV151E_R0.5.38.068 firmware. In this particular firmware there were Google security patches applied to avoid this rooting method. Even if you downgrade to prior firmware versions, you will no longer succeed with this rooting method

Is there a way to unpack the *.pkg file of the firmware upgrade for the TV like this tool here: https://xdaforums.com/android/software/tools-mstar-android-tv-firmware-tools-t3559227, but for philips TV's, so in a way that maybe could extract the boot/kernel/ramdisk.img to patch with magisk or use the universal no dm-verify from here: https://xdaforums.com/android/software/universal-dm-verity-forceencrypt-t3817389 and then repack again and flash?

I suggest all interested disable software updates from the configuration, because a security update may come soon.

If/when I have time I may take a look...

To extract the TV firmware I just figured it does need the AES private key from the TV and doesn't sound easy to get.

Hey guys...i think its a big shame what phillips does with theyr Customers ( with us ). They sell Tv´s with
allegedly 4k Resolution but its just 1920x1080 aka 2k it doesnt matter wich Mode. They know that Problem for a long time but on the Homepage they write about the 43PUS7373/12 the following

Hahahaha what kind of experience should it be??? How to get Ass kicks from the seller? Dont missunderstand me...the tv have really nice features and offers nice options. But it have ****ty weakspots and thats not funny.

----> But for me the much more important question is...did someone have a working portet TWRP for the 43PUS7373/12 to get root for my Android TV. So that i finally can debloat the absolutly overloaded Android System. I hate that the 2 GB RAM are on 80% load. But the Tv did just running in idle state.

Why is there so less interest in rooting (real) TVs?
My problem with my PUS6501 (Philips) is that im not able to send files from my PC directly to the HDD wich is connected to an external USB port of the TV.
With root access i would be able to solve this issue...

My answer might come late to the party, but there an app called Send Files to TV.

Hi guys,

I made some attempts to root, but than figured out, that once a higher firmware version was installed on the TV, even the downgrade won't help, alas.
Actually I wanted to root, because the wipe data/cache option is missing in the recovery and I was not sure whether all the settings were reset on reflash.
The actual problem I'm facing is, that my TV displays vertical colored lines and pixel blocks as soon as I start Netflix, launch a Youtube video or play 4K content via HDMI. FHD videos via HDMI as well as TV SAT content does not cause the problem.

It looks like this once it crashes:

In this case, not even a menu is visible, but I can hear the sound. The the OS does not completely crash, only the display.

Maybe you know the remedy?

What I've tried up to now:
- root (failed)
- reflash to the older FW
- reflash to the latest FW
- flash wipe package from the header of this thread
- reinstall TV via menu
- pull the plug for longer time (hours)
- set the resolution to 3840x2160 via adb shell / wm size

I'm a bit curios, but after settings the resolution to 4K I see the following calling wm size:
Physical size: 1920x1080
Override size: 3840x2160

My model is Philips 8700/12, so it's definitely 4K, why is the displayed physical size only FHD?
Any ideas, comments? You help will be much appreciated as I'm almost despaired.

normal behaviour:
Panel = 4K => GUI = FHD
Panel = FHD => GUI = 720p
(however, videos can be displayed up to 4K)
