I have read and reread all the postings about unlocking the bootloader and I am more confused than when I started. I am not a novice at unlocking the bootloader on phones, but I am surely not a pro and don't want to end up with a $400 paper weight. I am using the A2017U-B27 and would like to end up with a unlocked bootloader and rooted phone. Is it possiable? Where do I start?
Thanks in advance.

I would like to add my voice and thank DrakenFX and Starvirus.

My B03 A2017G Axon 7 is bootloader unlocked. No root installed, out of choice.
My process .
1) I was unable to place my device in EDL status using physical buttons. I had to do it via ADB: [adb reboot edl]
2) Via axon7root, I only flahshed the recovery.img file. This resulted in TWRP being installed.
3) From this point, I followed Starvirus' instructions (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68738854)
4) Upon rebooting I was confronted with the "insert password" screen. No problem. Boot into TWRP. When prompted for password, hit cancel and proceed to a full wipe of the device.

All done. Bootloader Unlocked.
Now all I need is CM ;)

Thank you all.

It's very possible. I just did it. Just follow the guide. Where are you stuck on?

You got to get recovery on it first (tenfar method).

After that follow this guide. It's really not hard at all.

Where exactly do I put this file:
TWRP_UnlockBootloader_by_DrakenFX.zip?

I put it in the base storage for the phone, but when I try to flash it with TWRP, I can't actually see the file anywhere.

Also, every time I go into TWRP, it asks for a "decrypt" password. Another user was also having this issue, and he was told to wipe internal storage and data. I did this, but the same issue persists.

I have the US model.

Press cancel when you on pass screen. then go wipe and press format data which on bottom right side.

I just did this. Same issue happens. Asks for decrypt password.

Ok, it seems like when I set the phone up, it sets the password, but when I get into TWRP directly after formatting, I have access to everything. only the zip file I need to flash is also uninstalled. I don't set any passwords or fingerprints either.

Edit - I was an idiot. Kept looking in my external sdcard instead of internal storage. Found the file and flashed it. bootloader seems to be unlocked.

It depends on what you did wrong and where.

Did you set "OEM unlock"? Did you flash the fastboot image? What model do you have? I guess the sure thing would be to use TWRP to flash back to stock using system.img and start over

The step #6 is to backup your current fastboot image. first command creates the fbob file on your sdcard. Second command pulls it from the phone to your computer. Neither is a requisite to unlock but just a backup of current fastboot which gets flashed with new one in next step

I have question about @Starvirus method for A2017G B03, when sending files to SDCARD
adb push fastboot_unlock.img /sdcard/
this mean I have to download file TWRP_UnlockBootloader_by_DrakenFX.zip from first page unzip it and send only this one file fastboot_unlock.img to sdcard?

My second question is if after bootloader unlock can I flash this newest TWRP FlashFire ZIP SuerSU from this page?:
