The Verizon Quark variant (XT1254) is bootloader locked by demand of Verizon. The other Moto Quarks (XT1250, XT1225) are not. For those, you can get free bootloader unlock code from Motorola.I recently bought this phone and all I thought was why can't I do it the same way I did it with my previous phone hence this questioni should have thought about that

- One of them, the U.S. Moto XT1250 is the clone of the Droid Turbo in every way -- same bands, same FCC ID -- except it does NOT have locked down bootloader (and it will even run on Verizon with a Verizon SIM card). Until Sunshine came along, the XT1250 was the "dev" version of the Droid Turbo XT1254.
- The other, the "international" XT1225, has more LTE and HSPA bands than the Droid Turbo XT1254. (I still own two of those.)
It's all in the research, before you buy.
Blame Verizon for locking down the bootloader. Thank Sunshine team for providing a solution -- since you did buy this phone.
