[GUIDE] Installing a Rom/CWM recovery/Root or going back to Stock

Is there a way to root stock 2.3.5 and maintain CWM red recovery? Section 6 after step 14 the phone boots back into stock recovery? I did read on post 314 or there about, that the stock kernel rewrites the stock recovery, is there a way around this or am I doing something wrong? I have Titanium back up installed so not really sure I am in need of anything other than stock recovery, but sans the above explanation it just seems odd that after flashing it boots back to stock.
This device is for my mom so I just wanted to remove most of the bloat and leave it stock, so my only real concern with flashing a ROM is the ability to perform Profile and PRL updates, is this a problem with the available ROMS? I was interested in Superclean 3. If you go with a newer OS wil you lose the ability to move apps to the Ext SD?
If I do flash a ROM how does one make stock root back up, it seems the ROM is just flashed and that is what you get and to revert back you need to start all over using the PC rather than just flash stock root in recovery?
I will admit I am a big time noob, any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

flash the GBBootloaders.tar file in Odin. this will keep CWM on the device on stock firmware

profile and PRL shouldn't be a problem, especially with SuperClean since that's based off of the Verizon stock ROM, EH03. and no, i believe even up to 4.4 kitkat has the ability to move apps to the SD card

yes. unless you are still using a BML ROM (something based off of official Samsung firmware, like SuperClean, or GeeWiz), all the other ROMs have another partition called MTD. The ROMs like CyanogenMod will automatically repartition your phone when flashed, so no backup of any BML ROM will work if you've flashed an MTD ROM

Where do I insert that in the steps given in section 6? I see a GBBootloader.zip file listed in section 4 of the OP? Is that correct one, if so, just extract that to the desk top or wherever?

That said, this is probably the better way to go then anyway. Do I need to go back to stock if i am rooted or just follow Section 2 from where I am at?

Stock ROM no longer available at mentioned URL.

I noticed the stock rom is no longer available at the link provided. Does anyone have it at a new location? Is there any legal reasons why its not available online anymore?

Has anyone ran into issues with going from stock EH03 to 4.4 Kitkat?
I followed the instructions in Section 4 all the way up to step 17 where I'm in CWM 4 and did a factory reset.
Then I follow the instructions on UnjustifiedDev's post by installing the 4.4 Kernel zip.
When I boot into TWRP, I can't wipe /system or /data because it says it cannot be mounted.

I'm driving myself nuts!

Edit: Got it working! Flashed CM10.1 before flashing the 4.4 Kernel and CM11.
Yay!

Weirdly, I'm getting stuck at the SAMSUNG boot-up screen on my sister's phone.
I installed CM11 and the modified GAPPS without a hitch through TWRP, then told it to reboot system. Can't boot into recovery either.

Yeah, I kept getting stuck in a bootloop at that step.
Well, after running in circles, I think I figured it out.
After flashing CM10 and TWRP. I just flashed CM11 without wiping anything and it booted.

Now I keep getting "the process android.process.media has stopped", same with Gallery. I guess I'm getting closer.

I think that's happened to me before and it was a bad or corrupted file. Here are the md5s of some that worked correctly the last time I used odin. The file name is exactly as it appears in properties.

CI500_VZW_EH03_GB_CM.tar.md5
md5:89045064cf45ccd85f8ad746911b6e28

Atlas_v2.2.pit
md5:a0eaf496375cf72b90f7ceef4f0a4538

Be sure to use the (PDA) button to select the EH03 file. I don't think I've ever read what actually happens if you click the (PHONE) button, only that it's very bad. Also the small window under the first square window must turn yellow when your phone is connected in download mode or it won't work. No yellow window means odin can't see your phone which usually means you need a different usb cable or port. Odin is very finicky about the usb cable. OEM Samsung is best and I think I've had an OEM Motorola that worked too. LG has never worked for me.

would anybody mind listing the different steps required to get on kitkat? then I can update the guide to reflect those changes. thx
I used your guide and had no issues at all. You have the extra step in step #4. This guide is top notch. Thank you.

Is it possible to root this phone with a program like kingo and just flash a custom recovery using the goo manager app? Or is Odin the only way currently?

i think you could use any root program to just root the phone if you want to do that, and there is a recovery available on GooManager, but it's liable to brick your phone because it's really old and only works with cm7 and cm9-based ROMs

also, if you are working with the stock ROM (EH03), you should flash the gingerbread bootloader before flashing cwm 2.5 and the su zip.

Yeah I'm bone stock 2.3.5 EH03. I might try flashing cm11 using Odin. I already have Odin 3.09 on my pc for my note 3...can I use that or do I have to use 1.3 in the guide?

NO DON'T FLASH CM11 WITH ODIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

uhm.. i mean you could try 3.09 but it might not work, just download 1.3 unless you're willing to maybe brick a phone.

flash cm10.1 before a cm11/kitkat build

just flash cm10.1 nightly before flashing kitkat. i think you flash it two or three times, not sure. you might want to look at Times_Infinity's CM11 thread for a good, comprehensive guide

It is important to have the correct version of Odin for each device, as some versions don't work on some devices. However, you are lucky in this case because 3.09 works on the Fascinate according to This thread here at XDA.. The best version for the Fascinate is 1.85, but 3.09 works on all the 1.85 phones.

Since you are already on EH03, you could theoretically just Odin in CWM4fixed and the GB bootloaders, then flash CM10.1 & then CM11. Probably best to Odin in a fresh EH03 just in case yours is different, though.

1988 Supra? :)
