yeah i read about kuan's updated method mentioned here:
http://forum.frandroid.com/topic/24...u-mi-globe-cm/?do=findComment&comment=3709384
i didn't bother because old method is 100% working, and i cant guarantee for new method yet... but i think i will update method soon.
does this work for all miui version?
i cant create/update this guide if i cant help people troubleshooting.
is it like clean install or do you just implement twrp with this method?
thx for video

I tried this method, but instead of using their patched emmc_appsboot.mbn, I used the global dev 6.11.3 version of that file, since I didn't want to be unlocked unofficially. It actually works, and this is on global dev 7.1.19. I also tried 7.1.19's emmc_appsboot.mbn and that failed. Had to re flash with 6.11.3 emmc_appsboot.mbn to boot. As expected, fastboot oem unlock-go did not work. Also I think prog_emmc_firehose_8976_ddr.mbn doesn't matter, I tried the 6.11.3 and 7.1.19 versions of it, they both worked (don't even know what that file is for). Lastly, I tried flashing without emmc_appsboot.mbn and removing it's reference from rawprogram0.xml, didn't work.

So to be clear this was what I did:

- backed up RR N with TWRP
- flash and lock 7.1.19 with edl as a nice fresh base
- downloaded the file for this new method in your frandroid link
- changed all kate instances in the files to kenzo
- changed recovery.img to updated zcx twrp
- changed the included emmc_appsboot.mbn and prog_emmc_firehose_8976_ddr.mbn to the 6.11.3 version
- flashed without wiping data or storage
- rebooted to recovery
- rebooted to system

Advantages of this method:

No need to:
- download a miui rom
- backup your current miui data (although of course still strongly recommended)
- flash a miui rom (instead only emmc_appsboot.mbn and recovery.img)
- boot into miui rom to initialise storage

(in other words, save alot of time).

If you need to reflash twrp for whatever reason, it'll be far quicker.

Also with this method I'd wager the miui rom you're on is irrelevant. If it works on the latest Global Dev, I'm sure it works on all versions.

As for disadvantages I really can't think of any. And I doubt if it could ever get patched from a miui rom, maybe from miflash though.

If there's any more testing you want me to do, just ask.

After finished flashing process unplug and press [volume up]+[power] until Mi logo shows up then release buttons and it boots to TWRP

Get to this stage after success with Flash and it boots into screen showing Phone, Cable and pcisuite.com wording comes up on screen?? Dont touch phone and boots back into MIUI
I downloaded correct Kate version of linked 6.11.3 ROM
I did replace the Recovery.img with the TWPC recovery.img as said in previous step
EDL mode ok and MI Flash was successful

EDIT After 3rd try at above managed to get to get it all done.
Thanks for the guide!

So if anyone wants to try it out I uploaded "fastboot roms" (20MB) according to method I described above: Kenzo or Kate . Remember to make backups.

Instructions:
1. Extract chosen zip to a directory without spaces.
2. Optional: Replace recovery.img with your chosen TWRP, included one is ZCX.
3. In EDL mode, browse to the fastboot rom directory with MiFlash, and use the "flash all except data and storage" option. You don't need to clean flash. Should take just a few seconds.
4. Lastly, unplug and press volume up+power until the MI logo shows up, then release the buttons. TWRP should show up.

It's really the same method as in op, just the appropriate steps removed due to the fastboot rom including only the bootloader and recovery.

Just a couple of things. You can clean flash in this method if you want, and it will work fine, there is simply not a need with this method. Also the MiFlash of 20160401 shouldn't be a requirement, I would be very surprised if other versions didn't work (it is coincidentally the one I used though).

just mentioned the part about clean flashing because without clean flashing it's just the old method.
this guide is primarily for new rn3p users who sometimes do weird stuff and if system files, imei or anything else gets corrupted it's better to download the whole fastboot rom because the new method doesn't fix those problems.
i mentioned 20160401 version because nobody tested with latest version yet and if i don't mention it someone will comment: there is no option "flash all except data and storage" because xiaomi renamed the option with the latest version :)
i can remove this if someone confirms that it's working with last version.
i don't want to test atm because i'm happy with my RR setup

Working on kate!
Just got this phone and followed this guide right away.
No (unmentioned) problems so far.

p.s.
I forgot I had the partitions backup on the the SD card and formatted it (oops!).
Was "system" the only affected partition? Could I just perform miflash again to revert to the previous ROM? Not that I find any reason to, of course.

yes if you want a miui backup just repeat the first steps of my guide and you will have a brand new clean system!
happy to hear it worked out for you as good as from me!

WOOOAAA!!:highfive: :highfive: Thank you so much for this excellent guide!!
Just got my new rn3p and read how to unlock.
Didn't think it is possible to use custom roms with locked bootloader.
Worked without any problems :victory:
I prefer this one over official unlock for sure !!!

And i can update to TWRP to the latest version 3.0.3-0 ? or i must unlock bootloader first ?
And with what is ZCW twrp different?
I had no problems with ZCX TWRP can't speak for other versions... if you wanna use another TWRP version go ahead just flash it inside TWRP and reboot to recovery. If you have access to TWRP you don't need to unlock your bootloader ever... you can flash everything you want.

Noob question. Can I root device using this method? Does the bootloader need to be unlocked to root?
Get twrp and after that you can flash superuser.

---------- Post added at 10:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:48 PM ----------

not possible for kate dunno about kenzo... there is an option in ZCX TWRP though but i don't know if it's working
And if i revert back to MIUI the recovery will be reseted to stock right ?
