Well, I ended up soft bricked anyway. I had been holding out on 4.4.2 because it didn't have a whole lot of "must haves" and whenever I looked through current SafeStrap ROMs I would constantly see: "Must be on KitKat already to install this ROM. That's like entering a job market that demands experience, lol! Anyway, I was aware of Drakeycmb's process, but again, just hanging back for a bit.

Then I saw this "easy" way to get it done, and seriously, I am mot blaming anyone or anything. What I THINK happened is either because Odin was set to repartition storage, or I git a bad download of URDroid. If it was the repartitioning, this should serve as a warning to others, but I can't see what the packaged Odin and files would be set to repartition like that unless it is needed.

I booted into stock MJ5 rom, one that I never used or touched after rooting it, I removed Slot 1 - the only slot I had used (at least I think I did, it was a delete function in Safestrap/Recovery. Then I factory wiped thee stock rom, deleting Data, Dalvik cache etc (whatever the factory wipe does with just a slide of your finger, no "advanced" wiping)

Then I flashed URDroid, and here I saw 2 error lines at the bottom, each line referencing E:\ "unable to format" or something similar. I retrospect, I should have stopped there, but I went ahead and flashed the 4 Odin files, rebooted, got the "Custom" screen with the lock on it, then... nothing. black screen, even though the phone was running (it was not off) Tried re-applying the Odin files, no good. Had no way to reflach the ROM, so I went ot and found the OneClick.exe that Designgears put out in January - That got me onto a working 4.4.2, but of course not rooted and no wat to root from what I have found.

Anything else I can do besides roll back to MJ5 and start over? I am open to idea, but nothing risky. Had too much drama already. Also any theories on what the hell happened?
I'm in the EXACT same predicament that this gentleman was in. I followed the instructions verbatim but upon boot into KK, I now see the "Samsung Galaxy Note 3" spalsh screen and then it goes blank. Smartassphone indicated he was able to get back to JB Mj5 and try again. I have no idea how to get back there (or if it's necessary to go back). It seems I just need safestrap installed. I can get into download mode but don't think there is an ODIN installable version of Safestrap. Any hep is HUGELY appreciated.

Youll have to do the MJ5 restore again. You must have missed a step or just a bad flash because its definitely worked for hundreds of people. I've done it several tolimes personally without fail.

I followed every step verbatim. I did get the same thing smartassphone mentioned:

Not sure why that happened but I downloaded urdroid again and am about to give it another shot..lol

If you are already on a KK ROM can you flash this over it so it can be like a new clean ROM? (Might have had a bad flash a while back and wanna go to a clean stock-rooted kk rom)

So currently any KK ROM must be installed in the stock slot? (read this and not sure if this is the same in all cases)
If so than means we should always avoid installing on the ROM Slot?

Thanks

need help. I have updated to 4.4.2 through this guide but now when I have installed bloatware remove app and every time i try to remove a system app or any app I have downloaded the phone restarts all by itself and the app is not removed. supersu does grant the permission but the phone just restarts. I want to go back to mj5 but it seems the restore to mj5 thread has some files missing and unable to download them. is here an easy fix to this problem on 4.4.2? thanks in advance

Your debloat package broke broke important files. Reinstall your rom, download titanium and remove unnecessary apps yourself.

Upgrading from Jelly Bean to KitKat is easy!

Disclaimer
As always, this carries a certain amount of risk so by using the guide below you agree not to hold me liable if your device turns into a very expensive paperweight (not at all likely but you have been warned! :) )

Prerequisites
  • Windows computer
  • You must be on a 4.3.X Jelly Bean (rooted stock or custom ROM)
  • You must have Safestrap installed
  • UrDroid Stock Rooted KitKat ROM.zip (Odexed or Deodexed) by @carl1961 (everyone go hit his Thanks button!)
  • ODIN.zip (download in second post)
First Steps
  • Download ODIN.zip & extract the .zip to your desktop.
  • Download UrDroid Stock Rooted KitKat ROM.zip to your internal SD Card by following the download links in the ROM’s original thread (found here).
  • Once downloaded, boot into Safestrap.
  • *IMPORTANT* Make sure you have deleted any extra ROM Slots you have created and that you have your STOCK slot activated!
  • In Safestrap main menu, click on the WIPE button and go ahead and “factory reset” your device (wipe data + cache) like you always do before flashing a ROM.
  • Once you have wiped data, navigate back to the INSTALL button in SafeStrap.
  • Navigate to the UrDroid ROM.zip that you saved to your SD Card and proceed to flash the ROM to your stock slot.
  • Once the ROM has successfully flashed - navigate back to Safestrap menu & choose REBOOT & then DOWNLOAD.
  • Your phone will reboot into Download Mode.
  • Now, open the file located inside of ODIN.zip labeled “Odin & needed files are here” on your desktop.
  • Click on and run Odin3 v3.09.exe.
  • On the right hand side of Odin you will see different buttons labeled PIT, BL, AP, CP.
  • Click on the PIT button and select HLTE_USA_ATT_32G.pit. Now select BL and choose BL_N900AUCECMGL.tar. Now continue to match AP with the AP file and CP with the CP file.
  • Once all 4 files have been inputted into Odin plug in your phone and click START.
  • Let Odin finish its magic then reboot your device.
  • Welcome to KitKat!!!

Next Steps
  • Now that you are on KK you need to sideload Safestrap v3.72.apk and install it to your device.
  • Once you’ve installed it go ahead and open it up and INSTALL Safestrap.
  • Once you have Safestrap installed it is important to note that you cannot mix Jelly Bean & KitKat ROMs with Safestrap….you must stick to KitKat based ROMs (it is possible this will change in the future...if it does I will update this post!)
  • Now that you are running rooted stock KitKat w/Safestrap feel free to flash whatever Custom ROM you'd like to try out!

Thanks @tropazr for starting this guide. It's dev's like you that have made the N3 the best device on the market.

This worked perfectly and was a breeze to go through. I did end up having to roll back to JB as Root Call Blocker Pro wasn't working with any of the KitKat Roms currently available. I have a feeling i'll be using these instructions again soon though.

Getting error message during the flash to Urdroid

I started with a rooted phone with JB installed on Slot1. I deleted the slot1 and made the stock active. All slots are deleted. During the process described here, I get the following message at the step where I install the Urdroid ROM
Updating partition details…
E:error opening ‘/datamedia/media’
E:error: No such file or directory

I made sure I wiped everything except for the microsd card. I even tried a different card. After this step I went ahead with the Odin flash anyways, and it put my phone in a 'bricked' state. I had to reflash to MJ5 using Odin and Heimdall.
I have tried this 3 times with the same result every time. Someone mentioned deleting data/media/0 and I tried that as well
I noticed that the Wipe is not really cleaning up the phone. I say that as after the wipe I can still boot the phone into SS or JB if I don't complete the Odin step. The JB ROM just resets but still stays rooted.

Thanks for your help!

What is RDLV? I've used the MJ5 restore many times on my Note 3 and it's always returned it to completely stock but mine came with Jellybean on it not the newer ones with KK. Hope that helps in some way.

Faslane
Thanks - RDLV was the first rooting method on MI9. So you've done this process, run a KK rom, and then rerun the MI9 One click to return to stock?

Damn - can't re-run the MI9 one click to return to stock - I'm guessing b/c something in the bootloader was updated. I thought SS was shielding us somehow, but it's not the case which sucks.

Does anyone know if there's a way to re-run the MI9 files via Odin or is that a pipe dream? I came from MI9 rooted.

does this still work when starting with NBN4?

So i'm currently stock rooted on NBN4, will this method still work and not trip knox? Sorry if this has already been asked/answered I did a search and couldn't find a reference to it.
