:((( Yeah, that's what i thought... but at least i want to ask... Thank you
Sure, I don't think it would do anything if you tried. I believe it would just fail cause a locked bootloader wouldn't let you to write to it. I was lucky to get a code back in November.

Hi i just got my AL00, but i can't install many things, like set proper permissions for fluid navigation gestures.... Nd nova it is working just half way...

Without the bootloader unlocked... What can we do? It is still the thing that we have to wait for Huawei to give unlocking codes? I don't understand that? Can someone give a bit more details? Thanks!

If you can, I'd return the phone, wait a month or so, and get an 855 chip set. These Huawei are a complete waste of time. This is the best and worst phone I've ever had.

Ya.... I just opened a dispute to return the phone in aliexpress, but i don't expect anything from them [emoji30]

Hopefully this will be possible to unlock it at some point? If it was before, why not anymore?

Lots of guides to use ADB to remove most Chinese apps. I never use Nova so can't help there. With the screen size, Stupid Battery life, Speed and fluidity of the 970 Chip and Camera. This is still by far the Best Phone out. If I were u I'd hold on to it.

I didn't realise how much I depend on rooting my phone and installing custom ROMs to get it how I like. Being stuck with the Huawei eco system is a nightmare. Samsung are going in the opposite direction and making their kernels available from launch. Mate 20x is definitely not the best phone out there now. And in a month will be surpassed by many others. As a brand, I won't ever be buying Huawei again. Kirin chip sets are very difficult to get custom ROMs on, stick to Qualcomm ... Mate 20 X has a good spec sheet, but the camera is overrated, and the phone feels poor in everyday use if you can't set it up exactly how you want. I mean, why pay so much for a phone but be stuck with a bloody Huawei eco system?!

I've got the 8 GB, 256 GB model with the pen. Had it 2 months now. Gonna sell it within the next month and invest in an XDA friendly device. Only people who like Huawei devices are Funky Huawei as they are busy profiting.

I know it's frustrating not able to unlock the bootloader yet. Yes, it is also disappointing to get stuck with EMUI.

But I feel, this is a very good phone, with good specs and very good performance with the latest CPU. It's smooth and has a nice screen. The screen is big and nice. It's a flagship from Huawei and feels so. And this phone ticks all the things I wanted - big battery > 4000+mAh, 3.5 earphone jack and IR.

I believe rooting is important too, but I am not going to allow this bootloader unlocking problem smear my experience of this phone. Yes, I too want to kick out all the ads in all the apps, and this is the main reason I usually root my phones.

But I can live with this. I wouldn't let this issue to reduce my enjoyment of using it. Besides, I can continue with official updates without worrying about 3rd party unofficial methods bricking anything.

Maybe someday someone may be able to find a way to unlock this bootloader without the dubious ripoffs like funky-hunky or some ripoff ministry, and share it here like how XDA had operated with a good conscience previously. Or maybe someday Huawei might re-open it's unlocking request again. Don't pay or support all these dubious rip-off "unlocking services".

Until then, for current Mate 20 X owners - don't despair. What we are having is a very good phone. We have other things in life to worry about than phone not being rooted. And don't waste money again by buying a new phone again now. After this phone becomes old enough for replacement, maybe then we can have a look at other phones later. Next time we will read about the unlockable status BEFORE buying a new phone.

That's a really good point. Part of the joy of purchasing a new phone is the experience of trying something different, otherwise it's just an upgrade of hardware. If someone wants that boring experience buy an iphone.

Wow that is a super realistic and pragmatic point. I very liked it.

Exactly what ibwas thinking... that's why i bought 2 units AL-00, one for backup when the daily used one will fail... I'm not a guy who pay more than 400€ for a phone, but when this thing came out, i was speechless... this fullfill my fantasy : Big battery, big screen, kickass camera, Stereo Speakers and Infrared.

My last 3 devices were Root and now having these Huawei's without Root, it's kinda strange, but i get used with it, beside that ADB Removing is awesome...

Hope one day Huawei will give us again the codes to unleash the real power....

Is system root dead? I've been out of the game for a while and I can't find one person working on real root access for any phone. Its blowing my mind really. I don't care about netflix, nfc pay, or anything like that. I just want to use my phone like a computer is supposed to be used, with root access! I want to go into terminal and move all my files around. I want to be able to rm my whole system if I feel like it.

I am going to look into repackaging my boot image with root access, but I don't know anything about how android has changed in 8 and 9. Is there a good reason that people have given up on root?

---------- Post added at 02:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:46 AM ----------

Also, what is holdng us back from modifying the normal boot image to utilize magisk rather than using the recovery boot image? The fact that using magisk as my recovery image means I can't access twrp without connecting to a computer is kind of a no go for me. Maybe it will work if I use twrp as my main recovery and magisk as my erecovery, but I would really like a system root instead....

One question for us who are new with Huawei root as missed the first chance to unlock bootloader. In Mate Pro guide is stated that you must boot into recovery every time when you want to reboot the phone, otherwise you lose root. Is it so with Mate 20x also? And if it is, can you use this app to make reboot more convenient: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78569733&postcount=2. Thank you.

Thanks to @topjohnwu, magisk canary builds officially support emui 9, albeit with some caveats.

Note:
This root requires replacing stock recovery with patched magisk init, which will then boot system with magisk support. This means that currently, TWRP or stock recovery and magisk can't exist simultaneously. Also, in order to boot with root, you will NEED to hold down VOLUME UP as the phone is rebooting or booting until the "device is booting" text is displayed. This tells the phone to boot into recovery, which is taken over by magisk init and booted into system with root. Failure to do this will result in the phone booting WITHOUT root or magisk.

I've gone ahead and patched the recovery_ramdisk for EVR-AL00 and EVR-L29.

What is needed:
ADB/fastboot
A computer
A bit of know-how

Step 1: You MUST be bootloader unlocked
-Start by downloading the relevant recovery ramdisk for your variant the AND magisk manager below
Step 2:
-Install the magisk manager
Step 3:
-Copy the recovery ramdisk to a folder with fastboot. Those with environment set up for adb/fastboot can ignore this step.
Step 4:
-Reboot your device to the bootloader. This is accomplished easiest with the adb reboot bootloader command. If you would like to gracefully put the device in bootloader mode, simply power off the device, remove all USB cables from it, but make sure one is plugged into your PC. Once the device is fully powered off, hold down the volume-DOWN key and then press and hold the power button and IMMEDIATELY plug the USB-C cable into the phone.
Step 5:
-Once the device is in bootloader and connected to the PC, run the command "fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk recovery_ramdiskMagiskVARIANT" with VARIANT being whatever ramdisk you downloaded. For example with AL00 you would input "fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk recovery_ramdiskMagiskAL00.img"
Step 6:
-Run the command "fastboot reboot" and immediately disconnect the USB-C cable from the phone. At this point you will want to hold down VOLUME-UP until the "device is booting" message is displayed.
Step 7:
-Once the system is booted, open magisk manager and profit.

Patched Recovery Ramdisk for EVR-L29

I just installed the app referred to in the other thread and yes it works on my AL00 20X. Once it's installed and granted root then several reboot options are available to be placed in the Quick Settings when editing them. Then just select that icon from the notification and phone reboots with root without pressing Vol+ button.

However there is NeoPowerMenu Module for Xposed that can customize the power menu including having reboot recovery option directly in the power menu. I haven't tried this myself and after a quick search, it seems that getting Xposed installed and working on android 9.x isn't as easy as it used to be. I'd like to have this and will give it a try when I have time.

You won't actually "lose" root if you forget to boot into recovery. You'll then just have to restart recovery to boot with root enabled.
