Interestingly, I just tested with the P6P OEM USB-C cable between my P6P and my Pixel 1 XL. On the P1, I was able to go to the notification shade, click on "Android System - Connected to Pixel 6 Pro", choose "MTP Host", and "Open with Files" (although "Open with Files by Google" might've worked too.
So I was able to see my P6P from my P1. I wasn't able to reciprocate, but at least it worked easily for me working from the P1 side -> P6P.
Hmm very cool. I get no MTP option on either phone! And it seems one always has to be charging, you can't leave both as not charging. That's strange. WHy can't it just be a data line?!

I'm rooted on a P6Pro with magisk canary. Whenever I reboot, the phone stays stuck on the Google G. I have to turn the phone off and force a reboot. Then it boots up fine. Anyone else experience this and what do I need to do so that it boots up the first time?
After many years i'd like to root again. But i am afraid that my banking and some authenticators won't work anymore. Can i reliable hide root for those apps?
my authenticator (googel authenticator) and my banking app (germany / "Sparkasse") works pretty good with my rooted device
Depends on how complicate the app's root checking is ;-) Your mileage may vary.
Use Magisk's DenyList.
Authenticators work when they are on the DenyList. I use MS Authenticator and Microsoft apps (Outlook, Teams, Intune portal) which hook into my work environment.
And also 'hide' the Magisk app itself.
Use Magisk canary 23016.
That's a basic step, and as I pointed out in the OP, this guide is not meant to be dummy proof. Users are expected to know how to use and navigate bootloader, recovery, ADB, etc.
If it makes you feel any better I sometimes forget the key combo too...mostly because I never use recovery and I don't use the sideload method.
Depends on the app. Best to go over to the Magisk thread and do a search for the apps you intend to use. Root, unlocked bootloader, etc. can be hidden from most apps by a variety of methods, but not all.

I (and a few others in the exact same circumstance as myself) only had trouble with one particular banking app (once everything was hidden properly, etc - as the directions in the OP detail), and it wasn't that the app itself wouldn't work, it would work completely except trying to register the fingerprint reader. Others found the solution that temporarily using the unrooted stock kernel allowed the fingerprint reader to be registered with that particular banking app, and then you could flash the rooted kernel again, and everything would still work including the fingerprint reader.
I know that outside the United States, some folks have reported trouble with some particular banking apps. If you want to find out in advance, you could use the search field at the top when you're in the P6P section, select the option to only select this forum, and search for the names of some of the banking apps you use to see if anyone has mentioned them in particular. Or you could just try root and see, but might be easier to search first especially if you have a lot of different banking apps.

Thank you for this. I applied the January OTA to the November release, fastbooted with my patched November <master root.img> and Magisk refused to install. For reference:
- The bootloader and radios did not need to be updated from the January factory image but I did need to extract boot.img from the factory update, patch it with Magisk and use that version to fastboot.
- Magisk came up after the first boot claiming to be installed, with the "direct install" option. After doing a direct install and rebooting from Magisk root access was restored.
- I had to "re-hide" Magisk but my DenyList was preserved.
Yep, factory method worked like a charm. 0 problems updating from Dec to Jan.

Question: What's everyone using for recovery? I don't see that TWRP has a version specifically for this phone yet.

There is no custom recovery available for this phone yet, not that there is much of a use-case at the moment. DO NOT use the Pixel 5 custom recovery on the Pixel 6 series. Perhaps when TWRP updates to Android 12 we'll see a custom recovery, but that'll take a while.
For those of you interested, looks like enabling installation to the inactive slot on Pixel devices during OTAs has been merged. Think that was the final piece needed (after the bootctl update was added earlier). Looks like it will be in the next Canary.

5I'd like to point out that there are two corrupt messages.
First is the redeiomessage:
This indicates that while a valid Android system has been found, a dm-verity mismatch has occured. It is not a fatal error, and the device can continue to be used. More information here.
What exactly causes it, as well as how to fix it is unclear at this time; I have encountered this error before, and sideloading the OTA fixed it. I personally have never encountered this when using the factory image method.
Second, there is theRescue Party:
This means the system has detected that core system components are stuck in a crash loop; this may be the kernel or a persistent system app. More information here
This is a fatal error; we encountered this when we first disabled verity/verification if /data was not clean; the user could either reflash the unpatched boot image and vbmeta without the disabling options, or wipe data to continue.5
From what I've observed over the years, that way has always been at least a little bit hit and miss, although I think it misses more often recently.
I've always been a fan of just using the full firmware image with the -w removed, as you said, and I don't have any plans on doing it any other way.544
That's an excellent idea for @android_dan.Have you tried live booting followed by a direct install? This way if it fails , android will just boot the stock boot image

I suggested the Official Google Android Flash Tool site because it has fixed things that manually flashing the factory image hasn't, in at least a dozen examples I've read about in this section alone in the six months the P6P has been out.
I know that it doesn't sound necessarily rational, but it's happened often enough and almost every time it's been suggested to someone to do that instead of manually flashing the factory image zip, that the online tool fixed their issue. -

I do not provide support for Magisk or modules. If you need help with Magisk, here is the Magisk General Support thread. For support specifically with Magisk v24+, see this thread.
Points of note:
- The boot image is NOT the bootloader image. Do not confuse the two - YOU are expected to know the difference. Flashing the wrong image to bootloader could brick your device.
- While the Magisk app is used for patching the boot image, the app and the patch are separate. This is what you should see in Magisk for functioning root:
- "Installed" shows the version of patch in the boot image. If this says N/A, you do not have root access - the boot image is not patched, or you have a problem with Magisk.
- "App" simply shows the version of the app itself.
- If you do not have a patched master boot image, you will need to download the factory zip if you haven't already, extract the system update inside it, then patch boot.img.
- If you prefer updating with the factory image, you can also extract and manually patch the boot image if desired.
- Some Magisk modules, especially those that modify read only partitions like /system, may cause a boot loop after updating. As a general rule, disable these modules before updating. You are responsible for knowing what you have installed, and what modules to disable.

You can use any version of Magisk now - Stable, Beta, or Canary. as long as it is 23016 or newer.
Once again, if you want to switch versions of Maagisk, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you "Complete Uninstall" within Magisk before installing the new version. Multiple instances of Magisk can break root.
If you simply want to update Magisk, the best way to do so is from within the app.
Once the February update is out, I will perform some testing with installing to inactive slot, and if it works, I will update this guide.
Given the low activity on this thread, I will probably close it if everything goes well with the next update.

Part of it is due to device differences - non A/B devices can't use seamless updates, so re-rooting is only possible by either patching the boot image directly, or by flashing Magisk in a custom recovery.
Part of it is also due to user preferences. Some people, like me, prefer to update using the factory images, instead of OTA.
And part of it is probably a bit of misinformation mixed in with anecdotes, where people who don't fully understand how the process works, but they declare that something has to be done a certain way because of what worked for them.
I try to stick to the first two. I've spent a lot of time learning about how Android works, so I make a point of providing instructions that align with how everything is supposed to be done, while accommodating alternatives for those who want them.
Notice the date of that post, 16 months ago. Magisk Canary 23017 re-incorporated the ability to install to inactive slots.
I have been following the commits closely, so when 23017 was released, I announced it in my guides. Had you read back a couple pages, your question has been answered.
