If you do the OTA update, you can download it directly onto the phone and run it on the phone.

Once the OTA update is applied, you then proceed with patching the boot image if you want to root your phone.

Notes:
- The boot.img you need to patch is in the Factory image file.
- Use Magisk- Canary to patch it.
Thanks for that - helps a lot.
Is there a recommended way to install the OTA update? Having some trouble installing after downloading the link to my phone.

The easiest way to install the OTA is Settings => System => System updates = Check for updates. If an update is found, install it.

Note: If your phone is rooted. Open Magisk and tap Uninstall => Restore system images.
Before you take the OTA update.

I oddly am shown 'my system is up to date' despite being on the December update.

Bootloader and you're welcome
Been trying but adb devices is not showing my Pixel. Made sure the driver was installed in device manager.
Tried both Windows and Linux.
The device is shown when the phone is booted up normally, however, and USB file transferring is selected.

Fastboot devices shows my phone but flash-all gives 'command not found'
Edit; had to do some googling and had to use powershell with .\ before the command

Yup!
OP, Open a Command Prompt/Boot Fastboot Mode/Boot Recovery, • Open a Command Prompt on Computer, 2. Open a Powershell Command Prompt on Computer: 3. Notes: • When using the Powershell Command Prompt Commands must be preceeded with ./: i.e, ./fastboot devices

I just updated my Pixel 5. Full factory wipe. Had no luck using magisk to patch the image on the Factory image, so I used kdrag0n's ProtonAOSP rom. Was able to root it with Magisk 23 and used the Canary channel to enable Zygisk for kdrag0n's latest universal safety net fix. That works, for safety net, but I now realize, that doesn't bring back Magisk Hide.

Is there a true functional plug-in that restores Magisk Hide, or can I use V22 of Magisk to root where it still exists? I see some plug-in suggesting it restores it, but I see a lot of Chinese texts in documentation on it, it's only available via a Telegram channel, and some commenters say it's a false sense of security (hides nothing)

Question: since doing the January update and re-rooting (which works fine) an app detected my phone was rooted. I see my denylist and Zygisk are still enabled, though. Do I need to do anything to make sure no apps detect my rooted phone? Pretty sure this wasn't an issue before after applying the secure fixes.

Did you toggle all the switches for the mentioned app in the denylist ?

That's not necessary. Why? There is a link to lineageOS (OP Part I - Information, 3. Update(s). :)
Because I think we have our wires crossed.

I saw lineage 19 upgrade, so I decided to upgrade and noticed I lost root. I begun my search on how to root, starting with the Lineage thread and didn't find detailed instructions (in fact there wasn't really, but I did search on the lineage thread) like this thread. I went ahead and followed the instructions even look at other android 12 root thread but this one was clearer.

I simply came across your thread and used it successfully to root.

I mentioned the custom rom because if someone comes across your thread using a non stock android rom, it could possibly avoid them asking questions... when I was just helping by mentioning my rom version.

Anyway thank you again. It worked for me.

Thank you for the guide, can confirm it worked for me on Lineage 18 root, upgraded to Lineage 19 and now rooted.
Data is intact no wipe required for me. 🎉🥳
 You sure you posted this on the correct thread? This is not a lineage thread.

💯 I sure did as I used the guide on this thread to root in general, but for my rom which happens to be a custom rom, Lineage.

There wasn't any instructions as per say on the lineage thread, so I guess reporting back will help someone if they needed.

    Thank you for your reply!
No, I was previously with root before the upgrade and then lost it.
I managed to fix it. It turns out it were the modules that were preventing my phone to start. I removed them with adb and it started.

I'm not sure if I can upgrade as on my previous attempts, the magisk manager would just not open.
Did you have Magisk Manager hidden before the upgrade?
It's advisable that you unhide it before an update.

I got root working via safe mode. At first, I thought that I couldn't get into safe mode with the patched boot.img. Holding volume down once "Google" appeared didn't launch safe mode, resulting in the bootloop.

I was able to get around this with these steps:
    - Flash the stock boot.img and boot like normal
    - Go into the power menu and long press "power off" to reboot in safe mode
    - Instead of booting right into safe mode, hold volume down to enter fastboot
    - Flash the patched boot.img and select "start" in fastboot

This put me in safe mode with the patched boot.img. I rebooted and the phone loaded fine.

Homeboy, could you add instructions to the OP on how to enter safemode? (Unless they were there and I just didn't see them.) I was pretty confused regarding safemode for a while.
OMG I wasted a whole day trying to get root. The info above worked for me. Thank for the trick!

is there a magisk boot img with modules disabled?. i have a boot loop and need a boot img with it disabled.
You should have your stock image you can push over. I do not think replacing the boot image with another patched image would disable anything. You can also use adb to remove any modules. Regardless heres my patched boot image and the command to remove modules. Power off, connect phone enter this command, hold power button to boot phone.

    adb wait-for-device shell magisk --remove-modules

    Patched December build boot image

For people who are having bootloops with patched boot.img
Please pay attention to this step in the guide
    Section 7
    Under Patching boot.img
4- Depending on the version of Magisk Manager installed: Set the Update Channel to Beta or Canary.

Even if you install beta / canary magisk apk, if you don't select the matching channel, you'd get a bootloop, so don't forget that important step.
