[Guide/tutorial/howto] LG GPad 8.3 V500 Android 4.4.2 to Android 9 Pie/crDroid 5.x

Complete and detailed guide to install Android 9 on your LG GPad 8.3 V500.
This tutorial only applies to this model, to check the correct version :
in Android, go to Settings > About tablet > Hardware info and make sure it is this model :
LG GPad 8.3 V500.

We will only use a USB 2.0 port and a fully charged tablet (but USB3 works too).

CHANGELOG ----------------------------------------

v3. Updated pack with LG USB drivers 4.5
v2. Minor tutorial upgrade
v1. Initial release for Android 9

1 ) TO DOWNLOAD

- djibe LG GPad 8.3 pack v1 : http://bit.ly/lggpad83djibepackv1
(Contains links to downloads + TWRP Recovery 3.3.1-0 & app + root/SuperUser + LG USB drivers + Stump-v1.2.0 root + Kitkat bootloader in case of problem)

+ crDroid / Android 9 (v5.8 or newer): https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g-pad-83/development/rom-crdroid-android-5-0-t3896853
Download latest build available here : https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1cFaxEZ6cbXTHB2JrXZZzIeNNG-2lCPaw
### Warning. ROM used is perfect except that Camera and LiveDisplay don't work, and will never be.
If you need camera for Video calls, use Android 7 instead : https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg...sting-resurrection-remix-n-5-8-3-oms-t3601456

+ OpenGApps ARM 9 pico : https://opengapps.org/?arch=arm&api=9.0&variant=pico

2 ) INSTALL DRIVERS

Install LG drivers from my pack (LGMobileDriver_WHQL_Ver_4.5.0.exe file).

Save all your data from the tablet, on PC, microSD card or using Internal Storage partition from the tablet

3 ) PREPARE TABLET

Before going further, install latest LG official updates for the tab:
Connect tab to your Wifi network.
Go to Settings > About tablet > Update Center > Software Update.
Tap on Check now for update and wait during update.
Reboot if necessary.

We now need to make sure tablet runs latest bootloader : Kitkat Bootloader V520f.
On tablet, go to Settings > About tablet > Software information.
Build number is xxx.V50020f.
### If not, quit this tuto and find a tutorial to flash bootloader first.
### V520f bootloader is available in my pack to prevent an extensive internet search.

Still in Android Settings menu, go to Security menu.
Check Unknown sources and Confirm.
Disable Verify Apps.

Now connect tab to PC, wait during drivers installation, and choose Media sync (MTP) connection mode.
Copy files from my pack you unziped on the tablet "Internal storage" partition + ROM + GAPPS (addonsu-16.0-arm-signed + Stump-v1.2.0.apk + me.twrp.twrpapp-26.apk, twrp-3.3.1-0-v500.img + ROM + GAPPS).
Disconnect from PC.

4 ) ROOT LG GPAD 8.3 V500

On tablet, launch File Manager app.
Go to All files > Internal storage. You can see the files you just copied.
Tap on Stump*.apk > Next > Next > Install > Open.
While music is playing, tap on Grind button.
Confirm BruteForce Mode with Okay.
Let it proceed ...
When Stump prints "Please reboot to root", reboot tab (it may reboot twice).

5 ) FLASH RECOVERY

Back to File Manager app, now install TWRP.apk app and open it.
Check all 3 checkboxes and confirm with OK.
Now tap on TWRP FLASH button and then tap on Select a file to flash..
Choose storage /storage/emulated/0 and select twrp-3.3.1-0-v500.img, confirm by tapping on Select (1).
Confirm again with FLASH TO RECOVERY button, confirm once and for all with OKAY.
Now shutdown tab.

6 ) FLASH ROM

We now want to boot to our brand new TWRP recovery.
Hold Power + Volume- buttons until LG Logo shows up. Release immediatly and hold Power + Volume- + Volume+ again until tab shows the Factory reset screen.
Press Power button 3 times to enter in the recovery.
TWRP shows up !!!!
On this first screen, check Never show this screen during boot again and Swipe to Allow Modifications.
Go to Backup menu, select all partitions, make sure Storage is Internal Storage or Micro SD card, then Swipe to Backup.

Now go to Wipe menu > Advanced wipe.
Select Dalvik / ART Cache, Cache, System and Data partitions and Swipe to Wipe.
### Do not wipe Internal Storage partition.

It is now time to install ROM.
Go to TWRP Home menu > Install and select crDroid*.zip.
### If no file is shown, use Select storage to set on the Internal storage.
Now tap Add more zips and select addonsu-16.0-arm-signed.zip,
Add more zips again and select open_gapps-arm-9.0-pico*.zip.
Swipe to confirm flash and waiting during flash.
Tap on Wipe Cache/Dalvik > Swipe and tap on Reboot System > Do Not Install (TWRP)

Tab reboots, be patient while crDroid is on its first startup (it is long, don't worry).

7 ) ANDROID 9 FIRST LAUNCH

Configure Android 9 and enjoy.

To activate root, go to Settings > About tablet.
Tap 7 times on "Build number".

Back to Settings > System > Developer Options
Enable Root access Apps and ADB
and toggle Advanced restart.

In case of a crash, you will have full access to restore and recovery.

Don't forget to copy original ROM backup in a safe place on you PC. Just in case.

THE END.

### In case of blurry icons, use Nova Launcher.
TODO: Magisk instead of supersu

Clear instructions, i was _almost_ able to manage to revive my G pad with these instrcution from Kitkat 4.4.2. to Pie.
However at point "Now tap Add more zips and select addons-16*.zip," i could not find addons-16*.zip and continued anyway with the instruction flow. Now it seems that i cant start existing or dowaload any new Apps from Google Play, Any ideas?

If multiple zip install doesn't work. Try this.

- Make sure you copied the zipfiles for ROM, addonsu and OpenGapps on the main folder of tablet's internal storage.
- Using TWRP recovery, go to Install > Select zip for ROM.
If you don't see any files, make sure you are viewing internal storage partition.

- Install ROM.
- Then again go to Install > select addonsu.zip and flash.
- Do it again for Opengapps.
- Wipe cache/dalvik and reboot tab. Wait during this first boot.

Tell me if you expeirence more problems.

Thanks, I downloaded those zip-files again to internel storage, gave it another try and it worked! Now it works fine.

Bought this tablet 2014 and almost threw it to trashbin for becoming useless, but was able to revive it with these instructions. Many thanks.

Well, I got to step 6 Install ROM and can't find either of the files mentioned (crDroid*.zip. or addons-16*.zip) and the app doesn't show an Add more zips button. Am I totally screwed or is there still hope? The rest of the procedure went fine and I am in the TWRP app. Found the files (well, adonsu-9.0 isn't what you called for, BUT) and put them on the drives (both) on the tab and twrp is trying to install them, but selinux is reporting no such file exists... (frustrating..)

Hi, you are in TWRP recovery ?
Connect tab to PC and make sure files are in the tab storage (Using Windows Explorer). If not copy these on tab storage.

If files are present on the tab. In TWRP > Install menu, switch the storage until you see the zip files.

Looks like no fresh update.
However there is no better alternative for now.

Thanks for updating me on the situation!

I just updated my bro's tablet with this, added nova launcher (seems much smoother than the original)...

But when browsing ebay (here in Europe) i came across something very strange! I like the tablet and thought: "Hey let me get one for cheap, it's old and the specs are outdated so whatever"... Found 3 of these tablets (can't post links right now i need to have 10 posts up) 2nd hand, and i was shocked to see the prices are extremely high! I mean seriously high.

I found one for 599 and for 510 euros (without shipping from britain), and i am pretty damn sure there was one for 400 something from Italy, and that i can't find that one anymore... There's none to be found anywhere else in Europe (from what i could find)... What could be the reason for these ridiculous prices? And why would anyone pay such an amount of money for an outdated tablet? Is it a collectors item?

Because if it is i'll advise my brother to put this on ebay TOMORROW lol...:)

    Many people want easy money.
I have troubles getting devices to hack them and write tutorial.
But your tab is great once unlocked.
I wrote this tuto for an engineer and he suses the tab as second screen.

    Enjoy
