This guide effects people with HBOOT 1.00 and above and a desire to have system write access. and head back to your rom as quick as possible or just flash other desired rom. If you have a new Legend. note that if you use this method to flash your rom, yes you can. but there's no known way to reverse the unlock thus void your warranty.

I bare no responsible if you brick your phone using this guide. be warned!

This guide assume you have a working fastboot, htc sync(drivers) in your system. in windows system as ruu and htc sync are made for windows.

process are...
1. nandroid backup your rom.. so that you can restore this after unlock.

2. titanium backup your system if you plan to jump to other ROM. "backup all user apps + system data"

3. unlock your bootloader using the tools from HTCdev page

4. Download CWM and FLASH CWM recovery into your phone. off your phone and boot to booloader and select fastboot [a red "FASTBOOT USB"] and flash your recovery using fastboot instrution from kasra_Qeshm thread and download the "For S-OFF" and follow the S-OFF instructions from that thread using fastboot. incase you forgot. off and than hold "vol -" and power button will take you to bootloader.

5. boot to your new CWM recovery and restore your rom from step 1 or flash other rom and restore your data with titanium backup from step 2. (you go here from bootloader above and select recovery)

[about the unlock bootloader page]
Ok since HTCdev have given an unlock boot loader lets put it to good use. The process is very simple. but note you need to be in latest RUU froyo to proceed upgrade your hboot from the site and do the unlock procedure.

if you dont have any froyo RUU laying around you can head to cyRqs thread and download the RUU he uploaded or the link he specified.

on the HTCdev bootloader ruu-download page you can use the HTC WWE rom 3.15.405.5 to update your hboot correspondingly after you're in froyo.

else if you do have your RUU around, you can use it to flash back to stock and use your correspondingly hboot update from ruu-download page these downloads are around 5.8MB. so if one does not fit try the others.

Don't forget to hit thanks button from the thread you downloaded their findings.

should have tought of extracting the IMG and put it in the sdcard as Blay0 put it..

well if you are wondering how to get the rom.zip as Blay0 said its in your profile directory.

[in Windows 7]
you can run the RUU, wait for the HTC Android Phone ROM update utility to show up. bring up your task manager and look for ARUWizard.exe under the processes tab. right click on it and select "open file location". you will find this rom.zip in this directory.

Actually it's not a ROM per se... it's RUU containing only bootloader. And it doesn't matter which one you download coz all links point to the same file...

And no, you don't need to flash back to stock in any way.

Just to be absolutely sure:

Does this guide also apply to HBOOT 1.01?
This will work even on a phone running CM7 for instance?

It actually doesn't matter which boot loader you have at the moment. This method will upgrade it to 1.02 which has option to be unlocked. But since ppl who already s-offed their Legends prolly wouldn't go this way it applies mainly to those with boot loader 1.0 or later.

And yes, there are other way than flashing stock RUU. Check other threads.

Have you actually flashed the hboot 1.02 ruu yet? If were stock unrooted, that's the first thing you should have done.

Hmm

My version is 3.15.405.3, not 5. It's stock and unrooted. Does anyone have any experience unlocking the phone with my particular version?

@ the OP

your guide didn't do much good. it has to be more comprehensive, and explain what to do if you are already rooted,or are running a custom rom...go to legend general and read a bit to learn it yourself, then explain it here

C:\android-sdk\platform-tools>fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0
-legend.img
sending 'recovery' (3112 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.383s]
writing 'recovery'...
(bootloader) signature checking...
