Okay, so for anyone who struggles to get into the EDL mode, follow my steps.
The key to activate EDL mode is to hold both POWER + VOL UP + VOL DOWN while the phone is still on. In about 8-10 seconds the screen will turn off, keep holding POWER + VOL DOWN while REPEATEDLY PRESS VOL UP. That should get you into EDL mode.
Try a few times and you'll succeed.

After 3 hours of trying, I was able to flash the bootloader image into abl_a (log says 'Finish sending image', I don't know if that counts as successful), but I yet again, failed to restart into fastboot by holding power down only as it just restarted right into OS afterwards. Should I re-flash the bootloader or not? What should I do about not being able to restart into fastboot right after 9008 mode?
I followed this instruction on the LG G7, a used model, and it got bricked. I.e. won't power on, even though battery was 100%.
Edit: I got it to turn back on. I had to hold power + volume down button, then plug in the USB cable. I felt it wasn't totally bricked, since plugging in the USB cable, would generate a sound on the PC.
I followed the instruction on this video: /watch?v=EkKfPPBzJ1c
This resulted in COM Port 6 appearing in device manager. Doing what the op said, power + vol down, then repeatedly tap vol up, brought back Com Port 4.
Com6 is named, LGE AndroidNet, instead of QualComm QD Loader.
Just to clear any misconception when the phone is in EDL (emergency download mode), the screen will look like the following, on an LG G7?

My phone's model according to ADB device is:

According to post #37 by user cogpie, the phone is supposed to be a in a state where it will refuse to turn on, i.e. will seem like it's bricked while making USB connection sounds to the PC; so I stand corrected.

But in device manager, QualComm refuses to come up, nor does Port Com 6.
I went ahead and installed the 64 bit driver, and got a popup saying the driver was not digitally signed and windows 7 would refuse to 'enable it'.

Nvm I downloaded a different file linked in the the directory, \Extracted zip file\Qualcomm_Flash_Image_Loader_v2.0.2.3\Driver\
It now appears under Com 7 for me in device manager.
