Where is the form?

I recently received my black Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Global Version and wished to unlock the bootloader in order to create a Custom firmware (which will be based around Stock, but have a lower DPI and use the Google Now launcher to have 7 icons in the dock & a 6x6 icon grid elsewhere).

During the unlock process I got stuck within the 'Add account and device' in Developer Options, with the error code 86006 being displayed. The solution to this issue is to change from the Stable MIUI 8 to the latest Developer ROM - once this is flashed, the device will register with no error messages.

An overview of the process is therefore:

1. Flash the latest Development ROM on the phone, via the Updater app
2. Register for a Mi account, if you do not have one, and log into the phone with this account.
3. Request the Unlock privilege for your Mi account
4. Enroll the device for an Unlock in Developer Options
5. Wait 72 hours
6. Unlock the bootloader with the Windows Mi Flash Unlock tool.

Mi Account

The Unlock tool will require that the phone is logged into the same Xiaomi account in order for the unlock process to be successful, so ensure you have set yourself up with a Mi account and signed into the phone using this account.

I tend to ensure I have posted a few items on the MIUI forum before I make a request as, during the request process, it states that they will take the activity of your account into consideration when they are making the decision to grant you the unlock privilege.

If the request is denied, you have to wait 30 days to re-apply, so better to be safe than sorry!

Request the Unlock privilege

The first thing you will need to do is to make sure you have applied for Unlock rights for your Mi account. This can be done here:

Mi Unlock

Try to make the given reason for unlocking something specific, rather than generic, as your request is more likely to be granted this way.

The time between application and hearing back from the MIUI team seems to vary. The last time I applied the request was granted after just a few minutes, but previous applications have taken days!

Setting up the phone

Before you can successfully unlock the phone using the unlocking tool you will need to enrol the phone into the scheme, which is performed in Developer Options.

1. Go to Settings / About Phone
2. Press MIUI version 7 times to enable Developer options
3. Go to Settings / Additional Settings / Developer options
4. Click on Mi Unlock status
5. Click on Add account and device

Note that if you get an error code of 86006 then download and flash the latest Developer ROM through the built-in Updater app:

Xiaomi ROM Download

Three Day Wait

After enrolling the phone, Xiaomi require that 72 hours (3 days) must elapse before the bootloader can be unlocked with Xiaomi's MiFlash Unlock Tool.

If you attempt to unlock during this period, the process will get to 99% before displaying an error message requesting you wait 72 hours.

Unlocking the bootloader

Once the phone is enrolled and 72 hours have passed, you can use the Unlock tool.

This can be downloaded from the MIUI Unlock site once your unlock request has been granted:

Mi Unlock

On a Windows PC, extract the zip file to a temporary folder and run the miflash_unlock.exe tool.

Log on using the same Mi account that you have signed into the device with and follow the on screen prompts, which involve booting the phone into Fastboot with Power and Volume Down.
Ok, I created an account, logged in and what do I see? A freaking Chinese site, WTF? Somebody please help me cause my patience is running thin with Xiaomi right about now.

Why they make a simple thing like unlocking a bootloader so doggone complicated, beats the $h!7 outta me! I don't know why they couldn't just ask for one's IMEI #(s) rather than this ridiculous 72 hours process. that is still not guaranteed to work the first time!

you can have an English version of the unlocking web page here : http://en.miui.com/unlock/

just be patient, it works well.
Hey lightman33, thanks for your response. But unfortunately, when I click on the "Unlock Now" button, it redirects to that Chinese version of the site I posted the screenshot earlier. That's exactly the same thing that happened to me earlier before I posted the screenshot.

Hey all, am I the only one experiencing the redirect to the Chinese version of the site when you click on the "Unlock button" on the English site? If anyone has experienced this issue and figured the workaround to it, please let me know because I have a phone with this crappy MIUI that I absolutely hate and can't use. The piece of dump doesn't even allow for adoptable storage -- only portable storage is available. Would appreciate an assistance from anyone. Thanks.

Hello,
yes if you click "unlock" you'll be redirected to the chinese language page, however at the bottom of the same you'll find the word "English". Click on it and the login page will appear in... English :D

Hi, thanks for your response. I am aware of the English button on the login page because I was able to login fine. It's after you login that the page redirects to the Chinese language page not after you click on the "Unlock Now" button. This is really getting more and irritating as I have a phone (3 days now) that I can't use because of this ridiculous hoops just to unlock the bootloader.

Ok, so I've finally get passed the Chinese page using Google Translate. Here's another problem: the page asks me to type my forum username, huh? I haven't even been able to register one. At any rate, I made one up and lo and behold, it worked. But where is the doggone form to request the unlock code? The page just took to MIUI forum after I type in a username. What am I missing here or doing wrong?

I can confirm exactly your problems unfortunately :(
Not thinking to change anything at start, but too many little things in MIUI simply doesn't work as I like and now I too would like to try other ROMs in near future. So followed the steps to request the unblock and I'm stuck like you...

EDIT: Now it worked! I just request the unlock, now let's wait.

EDIT2: Wow, it was really fast, 15 minutes after requesting I've been granted the permission to unlock!

Yes, I'm not in hurry, still in doubt if unlock or not. If we had a "normal" Resurrection Remix or similar I would be much more motivated. Just to change from Stable to Developer or Xiaomi .eu or similar I 'm afraid it will not solve my issues...

I haven't been able to unlock bootloader

One way or another, and after many trials, I haven't been able to get permission to unlock my phone. I wish someone could develop a way to unlock the phone without xiaomi's permission nightmare. I'm so tired of this. There are people very lucky who get the permission. I just can't bind the account to the phone, and when trying to submit for permission to unlock bootloader, the give me some chinese simbols and it's over... whatever it means that the sms has reached the limit. This is unbelievable. They don't even know how to make a decent site in English, and make the procedure easier and faster, but it seems they don't get that I bought my phone, I own it, and I do with it what I please. They are stealing my right to rooting it. I'm done with them.

What ROM do you have? BTW, I got permission in an hour or two, it was really simple. When I was on Global Stable couldn't bind it too (which is normal), but after installing Developer all worked like charm.

Btw, what developer build is better? I've said the Chinese one, but I'm afraid it could have chinese symbols all over and for the important things. I will use updater app, as I don't have permission to unlock bootloader. If the process deletes the data, that doesn't bother me much, I can restore it. Is the developer build's interface the same as the normal global?

Installed this build, Global Developer about a month ago and it works flawlessly so I didn't even update it although I get new notification every Friday. As you can see it's multilingual, no Chinese characters or similar things, everything is the same except you have new features (split screen i.e.)

I still couldn't get the point.
You have binding problem before unlocking the BL with global version, but then you able to do the binding with Developer version.
Then how you manage to install Developer version without unlocking the BL?
How we could flash Developer ROM version with locked BL?

You can install Developer WITH locked BL - just download full ROM .zip, put it on phone and go to Updater app - select .zip from upper right and upgrade/reboot. With new ROM installed, now you can bind device and it should not give error...

Well, it was 7.12.28 but there are at least 5 newer versions published after that, I guess it should be the same no matter which you use...

Thanks for guide.

Just one question, to solve 86006 error code we need to flash development version, binding and unlock. Ok, and now how we should back to global version, just downloading official zip and flashing via internal miflash.(Keeping bootloader unlocked status)

PD2:Granted the permission to unlock 39 mins after i requested. But app tells i have to wait 72 hours o_O
