You're on the right path. It will countdown 72h and then allow you to unlock. After unlock, I flashed TWRP and then any ROM of choice, Global Stable included - although I see no point in going back to Stable again, why unlocking then. And yes, one more thing, from this point on, it's all done through TWRP and full ROM .zip install, cannot use OTA anymore.

I can only talk by me, Global Stable is a good rom(to apply ota only needs stock recovery, flash twrp temporally and then reroot) so its better do it monthly than more time because is was a developer version.
My need is be root(TBP, sms backups and adblockers)

Bootloader unlocked :)

I have to change to newest developer rom my flashing it with XiaoMiTool, couse I couldn't add acount in developers settings - mi unlocked status. After adding acount there i waited 72H and unlocked bootloader.

Flashed RED WOLF recovery, GLOBAL STABLE ROM, SUPERSU and everything ok - almost :p my region is changing to the CHINA after every reboot (getting chinese names in for example theme names).

Any solution to this?

PS THANK U 4 GUIDE

Mi max 2 bootloader unlock

i just finished unlocking my mi max 2 and i have installed magisk. i have the phone since early November last year but i just succeeded in rooting it today. i want to share with u guys how i did it.

First of all, i joined xda forum precisely because of MI MAX 2. pls u guys should add it to 'DEVICES'. oneplus 5 has been added to ur device but till now u guys are still kinda sidelining MI MAX 2

I think the reasons why many people have not been able to unlock their bootloader are tiny little mistakes that they dont even realize the mistakes. So even when they follow the procedures properly they still don't achieve their desire.

We all know that bootloader is almost impossible to unlock on global stable rom so we need to download global developer and use the updater to install it. Well let me guide u through that, and things u must avoid doing during the process. Don't forget to do full backup before u start. Do backup in settings. You can also create a folder on your pc and copy every individual folder from your phone to your pc e.g copy android folder, ucbrowser folder, music folder, xender folder, etc. It is time consuming but u'l thank me later.

1. Do not download the rom with your phone, better use a laptop. If u must download on ur phone, then immediately the download is complete , make a copy of the downloaded file and move it to a folder u know it wont be disturbed e.g music folder or movie folder. I tell u this because if u go to updater to use the only file u downloaded, the moment miui decrypts the file and it gets to the point u get the message that says 'your phone will reboot and it will wipe your data', if u click 'No' at that piont, that file has automatically been corrupted because miui already decrypted it and cannot serve any use anymore. if u try to use it u will get message like 'unofficial package is not allowed bla bla bla'. That is why i say make a copy of the file before u use miui updater.

2. it is advisable to first do an official update via updater to the latest global stable rom before trying to change to global developer rom. Also make sure the global developer u intend to use is the latest.

3. As soon as u succeed in changing to global developer rom, don't start recovering your data, instead just do basic setup like google account, MI account etc. connect to internet, preferably WIFI, then go activate 'Dvelopers option', turn on usb debugging and also oem unlocking, then go straight to unlock status and bind your phone to your account. You will notice now that u wont get that stupid and annoying 86006 error any more. Instead you will get a success message. Just to be sure, click on it again and u will still get the same successful message. Now go to your Pc and fire up your MI UNLOCK TOOL (preferably version 2.3.803.10). Sign into it with same MI account on your phone, once its booted, power off your phone and enter fastboot (u will see the instructions on your computer screen) then connect your phone , after it recognizes it click unlock. the process will get to 99% then it will tell you to wait for 72hrs. Disconnect your phone and try it in 2days time, the progress will also stop at 99% but this time it wont tell u to try again in 72hrs instead it will indicate the time left to comlete 72hrs. in my case, on the second try it says i should retry in 11hrs. All these means the whole process have gone well and XIAOMI is aware and have u at heart. i hope this help some people unlock their bootloader. JUST TRY AGAIN AFTER U THINK 72HRS HAVE PASSED AND YOUR BOOTLOADER WILL BE UNLOCKED SUCCESSFULLY

Very helpful posts, thank you.

I was on 8.5.5 Global, switched to the latest Developer Rom, and finally was able to bind my mi account to the device. Now also waiting for 72 hours.

I'm coming from Xiaomi Note 4x, never experienced this problem. was unlocked in 15 minutes. That was my first Xiaomi phone.

I've not heard of anone that wanted to downgrade their android version on miui, especially on mi max 2. I think u can if the rom based on the Android version u want is available. Why do you want to downgrade anyway? ?

EDIT: See EDIT-Update below

I somehow am unable to "update" to the latest Developer ROM to circumvent the 86006-Error. This is what happens:

- I head to the Download Page, get the latest Mi Max 2 Developer ROM (miui_MIMAX2Global_8.4.19_90753089d3_7.1, so it's probably 8.4.19)
- Got to System Updates. It is showing me MIUI 9.5.4.0 Stable.
- Tap the three Dots, select Update package
- File manager opens up and i can check the Update file. It gets a little checkmark

and thats it. Nothing happens at all.
I can't update to Developer ROM to bind my device, I cannot bind my device due to being unable to switch ROMs.
Anyone got a solution for that?

EDIT-Update:
got fedup with waiting and did a full system Reset. From there on I was able to flash Developer ROM and have to wait 72hrs to unlock.

I battled for three days then found Superfem1 post #64. It worked perfectly. Thanks

It looks like you don't need to ask permission anymore. So trying to bind device and account over and over and trying to get to the second unlock screen is just a waste of time.
If you get a fault 86006 while trying to bind device and account, stop immediately, you wont be able to fix it. Then follow the steps in post #64.

My next hurdle is rooting.

Unlock Mi Max 2 bootloader success in USA:

I just registered my Mi Max 2 to my Mi account via developer options in the newest official global ROM of MIUI 9. Loaded the PC unlock tool, was told to wait 72 hours. After 72 hours it worked and DID NOT WIPE MY DATA PARTITION. Back in bootloader, I manually booted into TWRP (fastboot boot twrp-3.2.3-0-oxygen.img) and backed up my EFS, recovery, and boot. Pulled the backup off the device via TWRP's USB transfer feature. Installed latest no-encrypt (https://build.nethunter.com/android-tools/no-verity-opt-encrypt/), installed latest Magisk (https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/). Tested boot system, all fine. Reboot into bootloader, flash TWRP as recovery. Rebooted into system, all ok.

Next step will be to fix the only bug of the current MIUI 9 ROM that I've found, terrible headphone output volume. Its about half of what it should be.
Fix: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-max-2/themes/headset-audio-boost-t3712647

Also went ahead and installed the charging limiter: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-magic-charging-switch-cs-v2017-9-t3668427
