Rooting and update to Honey Comb (hc)

Finding someone to update your Streak can be done. Instead why not read and learn how to root and update your device yourself. Everthing there is to know is in XNA, you can be successful and know the joys of owning an android device. You can always pay someone to unbrick your device if a mistake occurs, mistakes occur when a person rushes into moding their device. Going from froyo to hc is really simple. Rooting froyo is as simple as downloading an app and running it. HC takes a bit more time but easy to do, the difficult part is rooting hc,that is where the mistakes are made. My goal is to encourage you to learn, do, and enjoy the android.

This streak 7 has got me beat. I've never had so much trouble playing with an android until the TMobile/Dell thing came around. Can anyone direct me to the stock recovery image and a good HC rom? I seem to be finding all of the links broken.

Thanks

What am i missing?

OK. I am going to speak slowly and calmly. Here it goes...

I have a T Mobile Dell Streak 7 that i recently bought online. I want to upgrade it from the Android version 2.2.2 to version 3.2.x. I was unable to use any of TheManii links on this page to download the CWM files or the Wifi/4G zip or packages files. I was, however, able to access the update files from TheManii's DEV-HOST page. To me TheManii's instructions, though confusing at first, became easier to understand as i traversed the xda-developers website collecting the files and utilities i needed to successfully update my tablet. I learned how to use flashboot and apply a recovery image. I also became very good at renaming different ROM packages and applying them as an update.pkg to be applied to the device while in recovery mode. My problem is that after using both Method I and Method II my t-mobile tablet remains at version 2.2.2.

Requirements:
You must be on any 2.2.x, update will not work if you are on any version of honeystreak OK, understood
Stock 2.2.2 recovery (for method one) - OK, understood
Clockwork mod 3.0 (For method two) - Installed it, accessed it but didn't use it cause i couldn't find the update.zip file
Battery charged to 60% or greater - OK, understood

How to use fastboot:
Setting up fastboot for Windows -XDA wiki - read and understood it
Installing a recovery - XDA wiki - read and understood it

METHOD ONE:
Instructions:
Flash with fastboot (if needed):
EU Stock Froyo recovery.img
US Stock Froyo recovery.img - used the updated files from TheManii's DEV-HOST page
Download the correct pkg:
update.pkg for EU 3G
update.pkg for EU Wifi
update.pkg for US 4G - used the updated files from TheManii's DEV-HOST page
update.pkg for US Wifi - used the updated files from TheManii's DEV-HOST page
Rename pkg to 'update.pkg' and copy to 'sdcard' - no problem here
Reboot
Flash with 'Software upgrade via Update.pkg on SD Card' - i could get the recovery/pkg update to work for package version 336 but not for package versions 506 and 514 (as soon as i hit the pwr button, in recovery mode, to start the update the device would lock up right there).
Optional: Install clockwork mod 5.0
Optional: Root your device - i couldn't find an app or tut that actually works.

METHOD TWO::
Instructions:
Install clockwork mod 3.0 - did it; works fine
Download the correct zip:
update.zip for EU 3G
update.zip for EU Wifi
update.zip for US 4G - link didn't work; couldn't find the file elsewhere
update.zip for US Wifi - link didn't work; couldn't find the file elsewhere
Reboot
Install with clockwork mod
Factory reset your device
Optional: Install clockwork mod 5.0
Optional: Root your device

MY STEPS:
1. Installed Dell USB drivers for the tmobile Streak 7 on my windows 7 laptop.
2. With the tablet On i connected the device to my laptop via usb and it was recognized just fine. At the CLI "ADB Devices" found the tablet, no problem.
3. Disconnected usb cable and rebooted the tablet into Fastboot [vol-, pwr]
4. Reconnect usb cable to tablet. At the CLI "Fastboot devices" found the tablet >>> "?"
5. At CLI "fastboot flash recovery recovery-336.img" flashed the recovery files to the device (it only took a few seconds). The recovery file was previously placed in the fastboot folder.
6. Shutdown the tablet (i used a shirt pin to get to the reset button)
7. Reboot the tablet into recovery mode [vol+, pwr]
8. Once in recovery mode i select "Software upgrade via update package on SD card" to use the update.pkg file i copied to the SD card earlier (renamed from LG7_336_15420_33.pkg or LG7_336_0_33.pkg package files).

THE RESULTS:
After the update.pkg file is successfully applied the device reboots and i'm still at android version 2.2.2. Like i mentioned above, i was only able to get package version 336 to work. Package versions 506 and 514 4G or Wifi didn't work.

TheManii or some other kind person, please tell me WHAT am i missing??????

I hope this isn't the problem, but your S7 could be stuck in "read only" mode. There is a whole thread on this problem.

Okay I I am on ICS B4 and want to go back to HC, should I NVFlash or can I use the CWM version?

I am running CWM6 if that helps any.

I really need my data to work after all. My boss is going to pay for a data plan

IIRC, no version of CWM worked correctly with ICS B4.

If I were going back to HC, I'd use this procedure: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1651359 just make sure that you delete p23.img and p24.img from the package before doing the NVflash.

Thanks for the tip bro. I was actually able to finally get the tablet to accept the 3.2 update. I'll still read up on that thread for future reference.

Ok peeps i final got the my Dell Streak 7 (tmobile) upgraded from Android version 2.2.2 (Froyo) to 3.2 (Honeycomb). Whew!!!

For those that might be interested i used TheManii's METHOD II procedure to upgrade the tablet. In my earlier post i stated that i couldn't upgrade the tablet using the Method II procedure because the link (in this post) to the update.zip file needed to perform the upgrade didn't work. Well.... I went back to TheManii's DEV-HOST page and, DUHHH, grabbed the update.zip and recovery.img files from out of the ...Streak7/514-00 folder. The upgrade went through and after the reboot i saw i was finally at Honeycomb (3.2). Thanks TheManii!!!!

I have updated the guide (a couple days later)

This guide is only for upgrading from 3xx, it will not assist you in migrating from Honeystreak or "normal" ICS.

It's primarlily now for users that had previously removed their stock recovery by installing CWM (3.0)

i removed it, its eaaier for me to only support method 1.

i couldnt actually test it anyway, i cant test cwm 3.0 or the zip itself.

the stock rec is just that, nothing to test as no code ia changed

I just went back from I'VE B4 (to 2.2, then HC 506, then HC 514) thanks to TheManii, but it appears that the external as card isn't mounted properly. When I try the camera it tells me to insert an sdcard before using it. That's what appears if it opens. Usually it says something about the sdcard not being available or not scanning and that I should try again "latter". Anyone know how to fix this? I tried editing the vfold.tabs but that didn't appear to have worked.

Dell Streak Unlock

I am a noob here. I read how to upgrade Dell Streak 7 locked with TMobile to honeycomb. I am wondering if the process will unlock the tablet as well?

If I compile the source from Dell and install will it unlock, as that would be for unlocked tablets?

It does not unlock it.
You cannot compile the source from Dell because they aren't sharing. They shared the kernel and that is all they are required to share.
