I think your recovery got corrupted. Here's an Odin file for the MJ6 recovery. Try flashing it and see if you can get back into recovery...
recovery-mj6.tar.md5

Edit: If you were on MF3 and were trying to upgrade, here's the MF3 recovery...
recovery-mf3.tar.md5

I'm trying to download the mf3 tar files. it was going good the first time I tried it from the Google drive site but got to 32% and stopped. Is there any other way to download that file besides the mega site because mega never works for me.

Thanks, but install the MF3 recovery, the phone tray to start, AT&T sound but the screen It´s black, the led is blue the led never off, so remove the battery and try to into the recovery mode but show the same message but y red words say Kernel fails, do you have the leak odin file MJ6 maybe if install this file could get something. the file was delete.

Thanks for your time

This has been a really straightforward step by step guide. Thanks gtj0 and all that have provided files and other solutions. I was getting the signature verification failing. But I deleted the mj6-mj9.zip file and redownloaded it than ran it again through adb and it worked fine got mj9 running now. Thanks for everyone's help.

Having the same issue. MF3 recovery did not work. MJ6 worked and gave me recovery access but cannot push MJ9, gives an error message in the file sw_configuration.xml while trying it through ADB or SD Card.

Ironically, what I have now is very weird. When I start the phone, it boots in, shows AT&T logo, then the blue indicator keeps blinking while the screen is blank. Now is the funny part, the screen is BLANK and BLACK all the time. However, when I try to touch the screen, I hear the touching sounds. The phone is indeed working but the screen is always off. I am able to connect to Kies and brows the phone and SD Card. Again, Screen is black with everything else functioning.

So, my technique to see what is going on was to capture the screen and browse to the screencaptures folder on my PC to see if in fact it is working. As showing on the attachments, the phone is working even though the screen is blank.

I managed (Took me along time) to get into the 'About Device' and what I found is that, Android Version is 4.2.2 but the baseband version is MJ9 (as showing on the attachment) "When the phone did not work, I tried to use Kies to recover the firmware, which I think what it caused the phone to go back to 4.2.2"

So now I have access to Recovery and Download modes, but I am not able to push MJ9 through ADB or SD Card.

Any solution to the blank screen? or to the sw_configuration.xml ?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you gtj0. I appreciate your efforts.

A side note, this is the first time I buy a carrier phone. I always paid a little more to get an international, unlocked version for the sake to have the freedom of doing what I want with my phone. However, this time, and after reading around about the AT&T S4 and seeing people are able to flash any ROM, I decided to buy it as I got it new for a very decent price. I just regret not buying the I9505 instead! I guess I got to live with it as a punishment of buying an AT&T phone.

I understand much better now what's going on now and will have some new odin files in about an hour.

OK, If you're stuck with an incomplete flash, here are some steps you can try to get to MJ9...
These instructions assume you started with MJ6.

First, make sure you can boot into recovery. If not, download and apply the MJ6 recovery.
recovery-mj6.tar.md5
It should apply without error. If not, report the failure.

Download and extract the following files...
mf3-emergency-part-1.tar.md5.7z
mf3-emergency-part-2.tar.md5.7z

If you don't already have it, download the mf3-mj9 update file...
update-mf3-mj9.zip

  1. Start Odin, connect your phone and boot into Download mode.
  2. Flash mf3-emergency-part-1.tar.md5 which contains modem.bin, NON-HLOS.bin and system.img.ext4.
  3. The flash of system.img.ext4 WILL FAIL at the end. That's OK.
  4. Reboot the phone back into Download mode and restart Odin.
  5. Flash mf3-emergency-part-2.tar.md5 which contains cache.img.ext4.
  6. The flash WILL FAIL at the end. That's OK.
  7. The phone should now reboot to recovery by itself and apply a small update. If it fails, stop and report.
  8. The phone should now reboot to a black screen with the pulsing notification LED.
  9. Reboot into recovery mode and flash update-mf3-mj9.zip. I recommend sideloading instead of flashing from sdcard because the sdcard method reboots the phone whether the update was successful or not and you lose the error messages.
  10. Reboot the phone and let it initialize.
  11. You should now have MJ9.

It must be the inconsistent state of the phone. MJ6 kernel running with an MF3 filesystem.

Ok,
I went all the way to step 6 were I flashed part 2, and it failed as you mentioned. however, after I rebooted the phone, it did not go to recovery, instead it shows Firmware upgrade encountered an issue...
So what is next? should I flash again the MJ6 recovery??

Yep, that means the recovery is messed up. Flash the MJ6 recovery then repeat the entire process.

Ok, but to let you know, I was able to access the recovery before following the steps. I believe flashing part 1 & 2 is what missed up the recovery, which if I am right, will happen again after I flash MJ6 recovery then flash part1 and 2. But I will give it a try and come back.

Just to clarify, as I have mentioned on my main point, the curren rom version on my phone is 4.2.2 and the baseband is MJ9 not MJ6. Just want to eliminate any confusion.

BRB after following the steps.
