My phone did not lock after flashing the stock recovery and taking the updates, you would have to relock it yourself. I can still flash twrp recovery and custom ROM's. I am having other issues with my Droid Maxx. But remember that if you update beyond kitkat 4.4.3 that you will not be able to root the stock kitkat ROM.I am stock 4.4.4 (latest update installed).
If I were to try CM 12 and then revert back to stock ROM, is there any risk of getting my bootloader locked again in this process?
I am not quite sure if I understand you completely. My phone did not lock after flashing the stock recovery and taking the updates, you would have to relock it yourself.
