If that doesn't work, then I'd look at the drivers you've installed for the Xoom. I used an Ubuntu computer and I got that message all the time. While Ubuntu comes with the necessary drivers 'out of the box', it does need the device id, which I had put in improperly. It could be something similar, just caused by not having the drivers installed correctly, try reinstalling them and sending a few device queries from your terminal first.
Code:
adb devices
that's what i get on I run adb devices in cmd

C:\tools>adb devices
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached

problem solved :)

I re-install the driver

I got that too actually when I ran adb devices
but fastboot command worked :p I figured it was the lack of root maybe

When the xoom is on, but not in fastboot mode, it should give you a string of numbers (can't remember what they are for, device Id most likely).

When it is on, but in fastboot mode (you pressed vol down at start up), you won't see anything, but as you say fastboot sends commands to it just fine.

If it says "waiting for device", and you've already plugged in your xoom, then you have done something wrong.

PS when in fastboot mode the advice ID is different, don't ask me why, I'm sure someone round here knows.

Ok guys first post updated with a few extra intructions for launguage files and updating to 3.2 via OTG
did you correct my typo too of OTA cable instead of OTG? :)

edit: nevermind

although the instructions say you need to rename it to update.zip which I didn't - actually the one I did rename to update.zip failed to install.

Just wanted to say thanks for the guide. I tweaked it a bit to use it on ubuntu and successfully updated my stock Canadian MZ 604 to 3.2. Now I wonder why I waited so long to do this!

Just a small thing I noticed.

the link to the 3.2:
http://api.viglink.com/api/click?fo...ndroid.clients.google.com/pa...7.db223b6e.zip

http:// api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1359&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.xda-developers.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D1163523%26page%3D7&v=1&libid=1310735266903&out=http%3A%2F%2Fandroid.clients.google.com%2Fpackages%2Fota%2Fmotorola_tervigon%2Fdb223b6ed7c4.signed-tervigon-HTJ85B-from-HMJ37.db223b6e.zip&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.xda-developers.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D1163523%26page%3D9&title=WIFI%20MZ604%20MODELS%20ONLY%20Want%20to%20change%20uk%20%26%20euro%20wifi%20xoom%20to%20us%20v3.2%20step%20inside%20-%20Page%207%20-%20xda-developers&txt=http%3A%2F%2Fandroid.clients.google.com%2Fpa...7.db223b6e.zip

doesn't that redirect through two links to go back to the google.com source:

+1

its a complete guide from start to finish so it might be useful to have it as a sticky

it might be worth changing the title though - something like

[GUIDE] WiFi MZ604 Models - Change from 'your-region' image to US 3.2

as it doesnt only do UK and Euro - Aus and Canada are able to do the same processes if I am not mistaken, probably a few more too

think you should fix the link to the 3.2 image though as it redirects too many times for my liking - see #91 :)

I just would want to thank you for the clear and easy guide. I had a Brazillian Xoom and now with an US software updated on 3.2.

I've also installed the Portuguese Swiftkey keyboard (that I had before the update, and most beautiful than the original one), so that I still have all the accents in my language. The voice searcher is also working in my language.

Thanks again!!!

It's possible go back to the stock image without wipe all data? (apps, settings, etc)

For example, I flash the 3.0 US, update to 3.1 then 3.2...

Later I wanna go back to 3.0 NON-US?

Thanks...

the motorola dev site with the images on is the best way to go.

that's what I did.

download drivers
download us wifi image

oem unlock
flash
(do not oem lock) though

then boot up, set up, it'll OTA to 3.1 job done.

i'll see if i can find the guide I used

this post kinda has the answer:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052644

http://developer.motorola.com/products/software/

you'll want this image for the us 3.0.1 image: Build HWI69 for US Retail 122 MB N/A MZ604 Product Specs Download

fastboot oem unlock

I think it then asks if you are sure, blah blah blah follow on screen instructions

fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase userdata

DO NOT fastboot oem lock

So, I bought a MZ604 in Brazil (with Build H.6.2-21 for Brazil), but I want it to change the ROM to US (Build HWI69 for US Retail) (to get ICS), but I did not understand this:

Why can not I do the command fastboot bootloader lock after changing the system to the U.S.?

I would not want to leave the bootloader unlock, I fear that Motorola Brazil think that as "loss of warranty".

Thanks!

I read you can re-lock the bootloader, but I just read that its not recommended.

If I was going to do any warranty claims on my Xoom though I would first try to flash it back to the original region's images (which would require me to have the bootloader unlocked to flash the images back on) :)

hope that helps
