i know this is an old thread and forgive me for digging it back up but i just wanted to say that this worked flawlessly for me and turned my Asian firmware Xoom to a US one and it is now updating to ICS 4.0.4 and hopefully i will get Jelly Bean in the next couple of weeks!!

What if I'm on 4.0.4 and I'm using a UK Motorola Xoom MZ604 WiFi?
Would I still follow the same steps?

i'm sure you can, it would make your UK wifi a US wifi model with honeycomb 3 on it, then you can do all the over the air updates to ICS and JB. or you can wait until yours gets an official JB OTA update or just install one of the many ROMs here

Do you think the update for the UK based XOOM will come quickly? Or do you reckon I should flash a custom from for the time being?

i have no idea when or if any update will come to that model. for me, when i got my xoom it was an Asian model so i followed the steps in this thread to switch it over and get ICS over the air, then JB came out a few weeks later for it. it was cool getting the updates that way, but it is only stock. the ROMs here are very customized and tweaked to make the tablet much nicer to use and more fun to play with

so its up to you, really. flash one of the recoveries here (TWRP is a good one to try out first as you can push it with adb) then make a backup (TWRP backups are not compatible with CWM) then flash a rom and see how you like it! no reason to wait for JB to come to you when there are at least 3 custom JB roms out there right now

Got it working some how

Using galaxy S Blaze. Not sure why or how this happened. I downloaded and installed the app. Worked at first. Successfully watched a movie over 4G. Tried to install amazon prime viewer. Got it to work over wifi. Then tried to run Hulu and it gave me the unsupported device message. Tried to reinstall, configured ad blocked, uninstalled ad blocker, no dice. Uninstalled prime viewer, no dice on Hulu. Used titanium backup to restore system data to one before I installed Hulu app and amazon. Got it work again. Maybe this can help someone, or maybe someone can possible explain why it did that.

I wanted to use goo manager (rom manager and rom toolbox dont work either) to simplify my life and to stay up to date with the lastest bug fixes and stuff and not have to use my pc. I want to try a few different custom roms. Are custom roms region free unlike the stock ones? As stock ones in my region don't seem to pass 4.0.4. Thats why i wanted to change region so I could try stock 4.1.1 seeing as it was ota in US. Would flashing a different region rom mess my xoom? I'm basically looking to change region so i can flash jelly bean roms. rom manager and goomanager don't have roms for my xoom so looking to do a region change which seems to be just flashing a us rom but I want to be sure before i chance it.

Could you help me out please as i'm a bit lost on what i've to do. TIA

Will I lose root? Do I wipe dalvic cache?

Once you have it on your xoom you can do all the OTA (over the air) updates which i think brings you to 4.0.4 (i dont remember if it had a 4.1 OTA release). my mz604 was the hong kong version and this made it a US version so i could get all updates

if all you want to do is flash a custom rom and you have unlocked your bootloader, then just grab a custom rom and flash it. those roms are all rooted, you do not need to do that. follow all instructions in the thread where you get your rom as for what to wipe and how to flash

Did the changeover last night all went perfect till I tried to update ota. Then read somewhere to lock bootloader again. BIG MISTAKE!! couldn't get to recovery wouldn't boot, nothing. After doing a lot more reading got it going again thank god. Now running 4.1.2 and rooted again. Can't get over the smoothness of it compare to the stock 4.0.4 I was stuck on before. Nandroid done and goomanager can find ROMs. Don't know whether to flash TWRP as I heard its a better recovery. Off to research the custom roms now. thanks to all the devs that made this possible and keeping the Xoom alive for a bit longer.

It says do not OEM lock on OP and I always said never to lock. It doesn't achieve anything for what you want to do

Itd been awhile, but if I remember correctly you did actually need to be locked to install the latest OTA.

OP says do not lock boot loader again. I did and nearly ended up with a brick. As far as I know you just need a stock ROM for ota but mine didn't update past 3.1 till I got it going again after I relocked. So maybe someone can shed some light on the matter. DO NOT RELOCK BOOTLOADER.

Well it has been awhile, but I could have sworn that the last OTA required a locked bootloader and that it failed to install for those who were not.

I went all from Honeycomb 3.0.1 to 4.1.2 official with unlocked till I rooted and flashed 4.2

2 questions

1. Is the 'Dont flash on 3g' because I will lose 3g or because it will kill the device?
2. If the answer to 1 is that I lose 3g, would flashing on the Hong Kong variant fix the stupid partition layout issue?

I have the HK MZ601 everest, but I do not care about 3g anymore as my son mainly uses it.
