My samsung captivate automatically turns on everytime I insert the battery so I can't go to download mode. Are there alternate ways besides the volume down+volume up+insert usb cable?

Download mode is volume down + power.

If the above doesn't work, you can always buy/make a jig which will boot your phone directly in download mode.
