FYI: Pie OTA update from Oreo to Pie helps me fix 'Download mode' on my H932 with stock Pie.
Preconditions: H932 with stock Pie and unlocked bootloader(in my mind bootloader status doesn't matter), without TWRP and ROOT.
Steps:
1. Install LGUP Dualmode https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4848229&d=1571410779
2. Start LGUP with connected phone and select 'FOTA Upgrade' process.
3. Add this OTA file https://ota.googlezip.net/packages/.../0323aec4bf7707855a5f58b85826ec951e3f6bf4.zip
4. Click 'Start' button and wait. If LGUP shows an error and ask you the wpdapi.exe file you can use this https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5053209&d=1593797990

So the latest Dual Mode LGUP and the 8.0.0-to-9 OTA (of the two captured OTA files) is what worked for you. That is indeed the combination we would expect, so good too have that confirmed.

Have tried on 2 computers, but still no luck on my phone. Update zip end up with an error when flashing in stock recovery. Try boot on download mode afterwards, but still no download mode. Thank you for your updates.

What is Update.zip? The file with OTA upfate has different name try not to rename it if you did. Please describe what you did step by step? Attached screenshots will help us as well. And there are a few additional steps after installing LG UP dualmode, make sure you install it correctly.
1 Extract LGUP_DualMode.zip to a folder on your PC.
2 Browse into the folder and launch LGUP_Store_Frame_Ver_1_14_3.msi.
3 Follow the prompts to complete the install.
4 In that folder, right click and select "Run as Administrator" on "SetDev.bat" to set LGUP to developer mode. READ THAT AGAIN.
5 Launch LGUP using the desktop shortcut. NOT from folder icon!

For anyone having issues with trying to use FOTA Upgrade to restore their download partition where it complains MTP is not running. Make sure your Windows actually sees the device properly and that it's mounted. If it does not show up as a device you can pull files off of it will not work. Try uninstalling the driver followed by un-plugging and plugging in the device USB again. For whatever reason this worked for me.

For the case like me cannot recover the download mode, maybe the system have been partition part of the storage into vendor.

I also cannot recover download mode with this method; I am able to get past FOTA EASY UPDATE and then the swirly android update screen, but after a few min, It says "Error!" and the phone reboots like normal. Download mode still says my phone is "Unknown". I tried reinstalling LG UP dual mode and also tried both the nougat-oreo and oreo-pie zips with no luck.
