Following on from THIS thread, I thought it would be worthwhile to gather results to see the extent of the problem and to see if there's any pattern with regards manafacture date/place etc.

The Issue
GPS position is extremely erratic and despite showing good precision of 4-5 metres, the position moves around by up to 100s of metres, making it near useless for most applications.

Resolutions Attempted
  • Clear AGPS data doesn't make a difference to everyone
  • Use Airplane mode or Turn off Google location service. - Seems to reduce the problem but does not completely solve it.

The Survey
  1. Install from the Play Store - GPS Status & Toolbox and My Tracks
  2. Open Location in the phone settings - Ensure all location options are enabled
  3. Turn On Airplane Mode
  4. In GPS Status & Toolbox - Menu>Tools>Manage A-GPS state>Reset
  5. Open My Tracks, wait a couple of minutes to obtain a good fix, Menu>Record Track
  6. There are 3 views in My Track; Map, Time & Elevation. You can select these by tapping the screen and selecting the left or right arrows.
  7. Change to time view and after 15 minutes, Menu>Stop recording & save track
  8. Turn off Airplane mode
  9. Repeat steps 5 to 7
  10. Post screenshots of your track results
  11. Include 1st 5 digits of your serial, phone colour & software version

Note: Please ensure you are outside and have a good clear sky view so that results are not skewed by environmental variables

Grey Model - Serial HT248 - Software is 1.29.401.11 - Airplane Mode On (Serial is from memory, will check this-evening)

Absolutely superb results with no movement whatsoever

Note: I opened the track after recording and turning off Airplane mode so I could see the map in the background.

Not quite as good as with Airplane On but still very good and more than acceptable. In fact tthe only movement was in the 1st minute of recording so I may have just started a little too soon.

Definitely worse than the previous phone but just about useable for coarse navigation, although the elevation seems to come off much worse.

The pictures speak for themselves, Absolutely horrendous and completely unusable. This phone is going back for an exchange.

Update: I've spoken with Phones4U (seller of faulty device) and they've agreed to exchange it. I'll post results for that one when it arrives in the next couple of days.

Hi guys,

Im having the same erratic behaviour? Is this hardware related or software related? Im wondering is this due to absence of signal filtering? So its plotting raw data directly

Edit:
Nope, its hardware related and i don't think signal filtering is an issue.

I agree. I think HTC One X has an unstable GPS .

I am not sure if it is hardware or software (i.e. OS)

I am using ATT HTC One X with updated firmware.

And this is speaking from real world usage. Which is after all what is important to us.

I used CoPilot and Google maps . Both experienced very unstable GPS signals i.e. every 30 mins there will be a drop. I had this tested twice on QEW high way, i.e. from Toronto - Niagara Falls. So it was clear sky

I had back-forth trips for 5 times on QEW. 2 out of which I used HTC-one x . the other 3 trips I used Galaxy Nexus.

For the trips using HOX, the GPS signal dropped quite often, every 30 mins or so and it takes long time to relock position, if anything at all.

While using GNex, there is no drop of GPS signal for the same route.

Any folks here proved it to be an OS issue or Hardware?

Thanks for any light on this.

Navigon works perfect for me, it always brings me to my destination.
No problem with GPS I ques, it brings me to the door. :cowboy:

Probably a hardware fault with your machine, return it for warrantee.
No need to open another 'yes no yes no yes no yes no' thread, only HTC can help you with the hardware fault, not XDA. :cyclops:

Some will agree with you while others don't, so simple !!!

This is the solution to fix this problem (is a hardware problem, antena dont touch connectors ) Is a factory problem.

Hallo,

I'm on a Vodafone brandet hox. I had the same GPS-fault. I updated my phone to buildnumber 2.17.161.4 yesterday. I performed a factory-reset before i started the update and after the update and now the GPS works fine. No signallost or positionhopping. It seams the bug is fixed and it is a softwareproblem not a hardwareproblem.
