Question Has anybody tried booting a GSI ROM?

I know there's obviously no full custom roms but I also know there are other Xiaomi phones that can boot GSI roms.

Just curious if anybody has tried since I don't see anyone talkin about it.

Mine just arrived today on Miui 14 and I was gonna give it a shot if no one else has.

Would you mind sharing your process in how you did it? I'm still waiting for Xiaomi to allow me to unlock my bootloader but I'm doing research until then

I actually came from a GZF4 and the OG Duo. I helped with getting twrp/orangefox booted on the Duo.



I would love to get the Google experience rom running on this if I could.

Just boot it using DSU Loader from Developer Options if you want to use the official GSI

I tried it but when I hit the restart option it just boots back to MIUI.

Does my bootloader need to be unlocked for that to happen on this device?

Yes you always need bootloader unlock for DSU

Ive since gotten mine unlocked and used a few GSI roms-- could you share how you dealt with the 4G/5G and SMS issues?

I cant seem to receive SMS or use anything but edge/3g

It's a problem I have yet to figure out. For some reasons they have their SMS functionality in their MMS package. Even in stock ROM if you root and disable/uninstall their default MMS package, you lose SMS functionality as well. I think installing IMS packages for GSI ROM will give you 4G/5G, but I still haven't figured out how to get SMS to work. And oddly, you can send SMS, but can't receive

Yeah thats exactly whats happening to me. I spent hours digging and testing other ROMs too to see if I was going crazy or if it was an Android specific issue.

I see some folks under your Duo thread saying disabling Adaptive Connectivity fixes the issue? ill have to check it out but im curious about why that would be connected to the SMS issue (Great work btw

Yes actually but theres still some bugs that I cant tell if theyre GSI related or just device compatibility issues.

The only A13 GSIs I got up and running are:
Pixel Experience
Evolution
Project Elixr (Had more bugs than the other 2, couldnt get 4g to work on it at all)


Issues Noticed:

VoLTE not working - my data actually turns off when I answer a call from someone or make a call -- tried flashable magisk fixes for these but they dont work for it. (I've been able to get 4g working in Pixel Experience but its buggy, and in Evolution I got it to work almost immediately after enabling a few settings and installing ims.apk)
5G isnt working
Cant turn off AOD - actually sucks because its draining my battery when I sleep or its just in my pocket
Camera rotation doesnt work for the front camera (Found out you can turn it off during setup)
LCD brightness doesnt work on outer display - I've used every magisk flashable fix I could find and even the ones in the phh settings -- but for some reason my outer display doesnt have its own brightness setting.

I really wish I could get the front screen brightness to work, its killing me not being able to adjust it.


Everything else pretty much works fine. We really need a working TWRP build -- updating the GSI is a no go since it kicks us to MIUI recovery and we can only do a factory reset from there.

The biggest killers are the data related issues and brightness. some of the other issues could be ROM related, not sure, but also dont know which other ROM id want to try yet.

I have also installed pixel experience on my mix fold 2 manage to get 5G working using the fix in this thread using the magisk module https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/the-best-configs-for-gsi-roms.4450223/

I really wish there was a fix for this. Tried asking around but nobody seems to know. And it sucks because I love this phone on an android ROM but if I step outside or even try to look at my phone from afar, I can't even see the screen most times.

We really need more help in this space.

I don't know tbh, I think there's probably an issue with how xiaomi assigns the ambient light sensor and the screen brightness. When I built my own GSI for the Fold 2, I had to explicitly set the backlight level after auto brightness calculation for the front screen to work, and even then it would still not do auto brightness correctly.
I would spend more time on figuring it out, but tbh with how weird this phone is with SMS and it not liking having GSI being flashed directly on it, I'd rather spend my time figuring out more things for the Surface Duo
