prety heavy user on my S8+ and hasnt slowed down or lag yet as 4gig is plenty for a phone user with what ever apps you use even downloading in the background, if you're phone is lagging you have a dud phone and need it replacing.

Geez... How many apps do you absolutely need in memory, and which apps are those? I still have almost 1gb free RAM.
And starting an app just takes a few blinks of the eyes.

I guess you must be the kind of user that has 130 tabs open in Chrome, or in Thunderbird, just too lazy to close them... or just unaware of it.
And in daily life leaving open the fridge after getting milk, drinking the milk directly from the carton, leaving the milk carton on the kitchen counter with the lid next to it...?

I think 4 GB is enough for now.

Not a problem anymore because I'm selling my s8+ for a pixel 2xl, the only reason I'm getting that is because it's stock android, have you used the OP5 8gb heavily? I'm guessing not but i can tell you for a fact after a while the apps on the s8 are constantly reloading back in memory, you should know you have one? Use a OP5 and you'll see what i mean, the only reason it's saying you have a 1gb because it's reserving mem, surely you get that lol.

4gb is enough for stock android not for the ****ty Samsung overlay, have you used a OP5?

What Samsung overlay... You mean Touchwiz?
It's just a launcher... It doesn't just add an extra load to every app you start. Or isn't it what you mean?
Yes the touchwiz overlay and all the crappy bloatware they have, it's not the load it's adding to the apps it's the load it has on the memory, as much as i couldn't stand the OP5 with all it's other issues it handled memory and apps like a charm, not flaming or anything but this was my first samsung and will be my last.

And for the record no i have 1 tab open in chrome and the usual social apps, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, twitter like any user of 2017 would do.

I bought the HK version with 6GB ram, 128 Gb storage and snapdragon 835 - it flies! Keeps the apps in memory and open them instantly!
I ordered it from abroad, just to get the Unicorn version of the S8plus SM-G9550.
I have compared with a friends EU version ( exynos) and i can say the G9550 is way faster / responsive.

Mate trying to explain this to someone who hasn't used a OP5 is useless, they think the Samsung is fast it is NOT, i thought I'd try Samsung this time but I'm extremely disappointed.

Samsung has always had and continues to have extremely poor memory management on their devices. It seems that the engineers place more focus on ensuring that the user will see free memory when checking system performance overview, than actually utilizing available memory. Apps regularly refresh on my S8+ and I always have about 1GB of unused memory. It's pathetic.

Thank you I'm not imagining it it then, it always says i have 800-1gb free yet it's still refreshing apps, i don't know what it it, whether it's poor memory management or something else but it's the worst I've seen on any phone I've used even in the last 3 years, needless to say Samsung is now on my blacklist.

Not on my blacklist but definitely not happy about it and never have been. This is such an annoying problem to have.

I've owned the One Plus 5 the 8gb sys ram version and apps stay in memory for super quick access, the apps on my S8 plus constantly close and have to reload them back in memory, yes I've disabled close apps when idle, this phone is still randomly closing apps when it runs out of memory, whoever says a phone does not need more than 4gm ram is wrong, try the OP5.
Hmm. You're right.

I think if the S8 had lower system overhead like OP devices 4GB would be sufficient. I find my apps redrawing quite frequently as well

I would have to agree with ItsPeet on this. I haven't had any issues with my S8+ and I'm a pretty heavy user myself. And I've used the OP5 and it's just like any other phone...there's some things it does faster and there's some things the S8+ does faster. If you're someone that wants 400 apps constantly running and syncing in the background eating up your battery, then I would consider you a minority in the Android world anyway. But also, I think if you really understood how Android and the different OS, kernels, governors, launchers, etc. worked, and you're a part of this forum, you could figure out how to get a 4GB S8+ to not only match an 8GB phone, but even surpass it in alot of ways, even without root. There's a WHOLE lot more to lag and performance issues than RAM. But hell, maybe they'll go straight to 16GB next year and we won't even have to think about it anymore. I'm game :p

With all due respect do you buy a Ferrari to have to tune it yourself? I'm guessing not, some users can't be bothered to look at what has to be done to optimise it, that is the job of Samsung, fact is i never once had an app refresh on the op5 within a week's use yet the s8 after maybe an hour, the s8 has poor memory management on top of a bloated launcher, they know it uses more memory than stock android so it's up to Samsung to include more memory in their phones, and no i don't have 400 apps running, maybe 5-10 few of the usual social apps, then gmail sms messenger app, if it can't run those apps in memory then it handles it crap end of.

I've never had an issue with the amount of RAM this phone has. I am always in the habit of clearing the running apps anyway, and the ~ 1 second it may take for an app to open that is not already in memory is not going to bother me at all.

Wow, I'd say you're pretty spoiled.... Never had any issues, I don't even know if the app is in RAM or launching, because it is so fast. Only couple of GPS navi apps take few seconds, but they'd take a few on any phone... and are not launched every five minutes :)

No not spoiled, my mate 9 broke a few months ago so was eagerly waiting for the pixel 2 xl (which i still have on pre order) and needed a phone for a few months, unfortunately i landed on this piece of crap which I can't wait to get rid of to be honest, if you can not see the apps redrawing even after half an hour of previously opening the app then you must have a super galaxy s8 lol, because it's happening and it's real, again have you tried the op5? Please don't comment unless you have, if you want to know how apps should open then there's your answer.

As I said... Imagine what you could do with all that time it takes 1/3 of a second to redraw... wow, 30x a day and you have like... 10 seconds saved! :)
