Wanting to root new GS5.

I successfully used ODIN to roll back to 4.4.4, then tried TowelRoot, and found that it stated that my device wasn't compatible. So I tried installing NE9 > NCG Kernel; got stuck boot at the VZW screen, pulled battery, installed NE9 kernel; no success (stuck on VZW screen).
So, now I am back to install of N12 (NI2)? with 4.4.4
Am I going to be able to successfully root from here? If so, how?
I see people speak of a KNOX counter...what is it exactly, and how do I access? I came across it when the phone had 5.0 Lolli on it, but then I couldn't remember where I saw it, and couldn't find it on 4.4.4
I did click the phone into developer mode, but under About Phone, most everything is gray now, and I can't access, or click on most.
My main objective for root is to debloat, and install a different ROM, if desired, but mostly to debloat. Can anyone help from where I am at with 4.4.4; I seem to be unsuccessful. Obviously missing something?
